      By my experience the grade shifting on gm vehicles activates when the brake pedal is tapped or touched lightly and the vehicle is not decelerating. Did they change it for 2018 or were you doing this and it still wasn't working?

    If you set the cruise control, it will automatically grade brake much more aggressively. Set it at 55, when it gets to 60, slow it to 50 and count it as a brake application

    • @TheTonytodd
      @TheTonytodd Před 6 lety +3

      Exactly! Though they came out of the tunnel at 50mph, they didn't set the cruise control.

      Right - because how is it supposed to know that you want to stay at some speed otherwise? You may just want to coast down a hill before going up the next one.

    There are a lot of supercharger kits available for these engines from others. Chevy performance does offer better cams and other parts. One of the reasons why they may not push the performance upgrades on new vehicles is because of drivetrain durability. Not sure on limits of the current rear axle and 10 speed trans, but the early 2000's had marginal rear axles and transmissions (4L60E). The 6L80E in the 2008 to 2013 while better than the 4L60E in terms of stock power capability, is still limited to about ~430 hp, which isn't much higher than stock power in the 6.2L.

    GM's grade-braking works best with the cruise control set. My '16 Sierra 5.3 with 8-speed auto will grade brakes without a trailer when I it exceeds the set speed by 5-6 mph...and that's without tow-haul mode activated. And the '15 Silverado 4.3 w/6-speed auto I drive at work does the same thing without a trailer or tow-haul activated. I noticed in your gauge cluster that you didn't have your cruise control set at the 50mph speed you came out of the tunnel at. Please do a retest and an update on at least 1 of these 2 vehicles.

      TheTonytodd they’ve never used cruise control on ANY of there Ike Gauntlet videos. I don’t quite remember EXACTLY why they don’t use cruise control but I know they do in fact have a reason as to why they don’t use cruise control

    • @TheTonytodd
      @TheTonytodd Před 6 lety

      NormileGuy are you saying they have given a reason why they don't use cruise control?

    • @normileguy6788
      @normileguy6788 Před 6 lety

      TheTonytodd yes, I can’t remember which Ike video it was but I do remember in one of their Ike videos they addressed why they don’t use cruise control. A lot of other people used to ask the same thing “why don’t you ever use cruise control?” I believe if my memory serves me right it’s so that they can test the trucks/SUVs full capability’s under different throttle loads and they can get a better feel for how the trucks/SUVs perform. Hope this helped :)

    • @TheTonytodd
      @TheTonytodd Před 6 lety

      NormileGuy it helps. It's not a logical rule for them though since they actually do use the cruise control on the uphill towing run to test the engine/transmission tuning. To not use cruise control on the downhill does not fully test what is tested going up.

    So the full-size heavier Tahoe RST SUV with the 420 hp 6.2 V8 10 speed auto beat the midsize lighter Durango SRT with the 485 hp 6.4 V8 8 speed auto up the Ike. Nice.

      @chevyon37s Před 6 lety

      rlhmarines the 10speed gearing helps a lot and it's probably got more useable power down lower in the RPM range so that a a plus for towing as well.

    • @85funnyguy

    • @chevyon37s
      @chevyon37s Před 6 lety +2

      Ryan Maiese they're all just SUV's so towing isn't as high of a priority like with trucks. They tested them in a towing scenario, so it is what it is the GM's are better all around vehicles for some users that may tow more frequently. No need to keep making excuses as to why the Durango didn't do as well.

    With a larger wheelbase in a Yukon the sway is going to be less as the four wheels grip a longer or wider ground resulting in a lesser sway compared to Tahoe.
    However since the Tahoe is shorter wheelbase there will be less twisting along the wheelbase and so it is going to be sturdier with smooth or less vibrating ride and that was what was felt by the driver!

    since they are basically the same should of tested manual shifting on one and auto on the other going up and down. so if ford was sending you the XL for gold hitch you could of tested the short GM on manual.
    could you give us a count from the unedited footage of number of shifts on one of the uphills? it really seemed like that v8 didnt have the torque to keep it in one gear at lower revs.

    I bet the cabin of the Tahoe is quieter than the GMC for the same reason, I've been told, the insides of wagons are often a little louder than the cabs of the sedans they're based on. The bigger cargo area tends to amplify the road noise coming in through the floor pan...or something like that.

      r Robz not unless the manufacturer is an idiot. Full tank is a full tank! Tfl is just letting the fuel settle and air get out. Then filling it up again. The tank still has air volume about the tank. A full tank is full up to the filler neck. That doesn't mean the tank is full to the top... They design it that way!

      These guys routinely compare apples to oranges it really is so frustrating. NOBODY in the market for a Tahoe is going to ALSO be comparing that to a Yukon XL and not a Suburban. I really think sometimes they come across cars that are "close enough" to make some sort of half-baked comparison of which would not be representative of what anyone would review/compare in the real-world. It's better than nothing, but that is a massive gap and missed opportunity for TFL. It happens all the time..

    From what I understand the policy is to not use the manual shift/paddle shift mods because you want the truck to shift the way the manufacture set it up. The same manufacture also put in those manual shift/paddle shift modes. More than that it seems like testing should be done in some wild and crazy fashion of..... as if you owned a vehicle. Some how in the real world people buy trucks and...... wait for it.... own them. Why not test them as if you owned them which would include using the manual shift modes so you didn't have to wait for grade braking or wait for a downshift to keep the engine in a better power range? It just seems more logical to test vehicles as if you owned them. When I seen the complaining about the 4x4 switches before I felt the same. If you owned the truck like anything you would adapt to it. I'm a big fan of FLT, but would like to see more testing and comments toward how you would feel about it if you bought it. Not everyone gets a new truck once a week.

    Tahoe is a shorter wheel base then the Yukon XL, hence longer adds weight which more weight takes more power to move said weight. Thus loss of efficiency as well. Come on guys compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. Love the videos though.

      That is so exceedingly rare it can't be considered in any real-world evaluation, and certainly not something you are alluding to "expect to happen" on all of these. There are literally over a million of these on the road without any air suspension issues whatsoever. Unfortunately, you experienced premature component failure which should have been covered under warranty at least.

      hahaha sht is happening no it’s pretty much right. Simply because A. They used the Denali 5.3-liter (which is 355-horsepower & 383lb.-ft. Torque) vs. the Tahoe RST 6.2-liter (with 420-horsepower & 460lb.-ft. Torque). B. Tahoe has a performance package (so the braking is automatically quicker to stop versus the Denali). Other than that, the Tahoe took this one. Now had they used the Denali (6.2 instead of the 5.3) than yeah other than braking it would have won.

      Mr. RACECAR they said in the beginning of the video both were 6.2 liter v8s. Chevy is better because they don’t overprice the same vehicle. You get better everything with a Chevy than a gmc.

      Apparently GM has an embargo on 5.3 testing. There has to be seven 6.2 tests over the past three years. Not one 5.3 of any value tested, ever. Makes you think the 5.3 isn't the volume engine... TFL knows where the butter oozes from. I suspect GM is understandably worried about getting it's volume motor spanked by a 2.7 V6.

    • @regsparkes6507
      @regsparkes6507 Před 6 lety +4

      Drew, why would think this is 'stupid' as you say? This is merely a test with similar vehicles with the same engine and power.
      Maybe it WOULD be a good idea to compare the two engines that you mentioned I'll agree with that, but these guys are NOT stupid.

    • @chevyon37s
      @chevyon37s Před 6 lety +1

      Reg Sparkes yeah, maybe stupid isn't the right word to describe it. But the differences between these two vehicles in the test results can be attributed to the weight and wheel base differences and better brakes on the Tahoe. But I think it tells us as consumers if we got a 5.3L vs 6.2L test is it really worth stepping up to the 6.2L based on your uses for a vehicle.

    • @regsparkes6507
      @regsparkes6507 Před 6 lety

      Right you are Drew, in this case, it's a better test to have done.
      This is why I think your idea of testing and comparing the 5.3 against and to the 6.2 is a good idea.
      Cheers!
