You're right! Not in renaissance but in baroque french era they performed with the so called "inégalités" , unequal notes (surf on the web). They wrote equal quavers but performed unequal (dotted quaver + semiquaver). This performing style is known nowadays as swing and practiced in jazz music.

Not that long. From about 1590 to around 1725 or a bit later, so maybe 150 years.
