TODAY'S GUEST:
Meet Magnus Grimeland, a multimillionaire who has lived in Singapore for 10 years. A former classmate of Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin, he is the co-founder of Asia's biggest fashion marketplace, Zalora, and now runs the business accelerator Antler. Magnus explains why Singapore is an ideal place for building startups, whether Singaporeans are hustlers enough to start businesses, and why he still chooses to rent despite being very well-off. Enjoy!

So many hidden gems and Talents in tiny island. This guy is humble and down to earth.
Great interview of a fellow Norwegian in Singapore! 😊
Need more of this type of interviews. Founders.
yes sir
I definitely enjoy this kind of interviews. Getting to know each interviewees on a more intimate level without over the top kind of interview setting. There's much wisdom to learn.
One of my favourite CZcams channels!
Can you imagine if Max got an interview with Eduardo Saverin. I heard he lives in Singapore too.
Trying to get Eduardo
I read that he’s extremely media shy. Besides I’m sure his PRC wife is very protective of his billionaire image 😂
@@axianskinIndonesian. Not PRC.
Thanks for the correction. 👍
@@MaxChernovcan't wait👍
Really enjoyed this one. Thanks.
Wow.. another awesome and enlightening interview.....
15:34 Luck Plays A Role(Great Preparation meets Right Opportunities)
This is a good video and brings me back to realise the importance of having inspiration and drive.
I need both of them right now and I think I am soon reaching a clearer mind of what I want to do and where I want to be.
Excellent interview,, once again u nailed it Max…👍🌺💪
Magnus has given great insights into being an entrepreneur of start ups and how to inspire young ppl.
Truly enjoyed it n I’m going to watch it again..👏👏🌺
Thank you, I needed to hear this perspective today.
Another great video max!
One of the best interviews
Believe it or not, Magnus personally came down to my HDB block to pick up a road bike part that I posted on Carousell 😅
Hahaha cool
IMO, one of the main reasons that why Singapore is successful on the world stage, is that the bright minds gather the best ideas during their work and travels, optimize and fine tune it before implementation. Everyone one benefits from the most optimized and efficient of those good ideas. Only in Singapore does the HDB (public housing) and CPF (retirement savings) works for generations, and more generations to come. These models are being refined to cater to the ever evolving macro-economy for the benefits of everyone living and working in Singapore.
Many establishment in Singapore are built after independence, someone can check for its establishment date.Truly, the economy was boost after independence into now a morden city with strong and stable economy.
Another excellent interview and great advice, positive vibes, etc., shared by a fantastic guy. Great job, Max, Thanks.
Exactly
it’s so safe to live there !
Actually yes you are right
Wow Grimeland was my client, nice venture capital company he has and along with other antler subsidiaries. Nice people to work with.
Weakness is there to keep us humble. What we also need to realize is we need to protect our weakness from being exploited by others and also that weakness can be strategically turned into strength at certain times.
Humble? What for? I don't like feeling humble at all
@@senorbinario2855sounds like you don’t know the benefits of humility. Knowing that you’re fallible and being okay with it is an important mindset to have. It helps you from wanting to be perfect and instead working on something you can control and improve.
Listening to him, is really inspiring and fires up to do something.😍
1:04 And sometimes you don't even have to... put on a pair of shorts 😄. Thought he was going to say that.
I wish to be like you guy so successful, but too bad recently i got into accident and still on my recovery i feel so sad as i couldn't do much and wait for recovery. Love ur video from Singapore
I wish you a fast recovery ❤️🩹
@@MaxChernov thankz brothers max

Renting because he doesn't think it's a good investment decision? Or is it more likely because of the ABSD for foreigners? Private properties in Singapore, in general, can offer good returns in capital gains. Of course, the initial cost required may put some people off....
Norwegians are exempted from ABSD
@@MaxChernov cool. learned something new.
So Handsome man 🌹
Hustling can mean working hard. But a "hustler" is a negative term that means "con man." Important distinction.
it's an American slang for moonlighting
Who do you want me to interview next?
Simon Gwozdz… when he was 16yo he came to Singapore from Poland. He went through the local education system and did NS too. He is now in his 30s and has started some space startup. Quite an interesting story I think.
A singapore police gurkha would be unique. They are foreigners who are well respected by both the rest of the Singapore police as well as militaries all over the world, yet are deliberately prevented from integrating. Like singapore, their country is also one of the few that's proud of their history in being a part of the british empire. They are proud to serve singapore just like many of the expats you interviewed, but their reasons behind that could possibly be very different. The gurkhas have played an important role in singapore's history and are still playing an important role today, being able to understand them better would be interesting.
Lee Kuan Yew
Founder of Carousell - Quek Siu Rui
TikTok CEO or Chairman. They are in Singapore and very successful.
Welcome to Singapore!
Excellent 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Never insult your host
Singaporeans are many things, but hustler's they're not. They're actually very protected and not very risk taking.
I agree, and that's what Lee Kuan Yew thought too. That's why invited so many immigrants.
What are u talking abt? We got more tech start ups here than HK ?
@@peterlee6148 Thanks to immigrants? Like Anthony Tan.

If you get Eduardo Saverin ask him how much of the movie "Social Network" was actually true lol
as the saying goes...go where the gold is...to harvest!
He must have met lots of EDB guys promoting some new initiatives
INCREDIBLE BCOS LOCALS SEE ANG MOHS AS THEIR MASTERS!!
Dont even need to watch this video. Of course for the sake of tax😂😂😂
Dubai then
I was angry at first...hustling is a negative word...after listening i being to understand ur meaning...its not hustling its enterprising...use the right word...hustlers are like cheaters
go Batam or Tanjung Pinang to interview Singaporeans living there or who retired there due to cost of living and whatnot.
World most expensive country to buy a car but taxi & ride hailing ride fare are way very low comparing to other countries like Japan, Australia, London & the list continues.
Have anyone ever thought about it, driver daily overhead such as rental/lease, petrol, carpark and many more.... everything are getting expensive but fare most of the time are still pathetic.
For driver, more daily trips plus longer working hours. How to have work life balance like that?
Western tourists also wonder and ask driver how they earn with low ride fares in Singapore.
Recently, a CZcams challenge in Singapore showcased a ride-hailing service, where participants aimed to achieve a $800 fare within a 12-hour period. Surpassing expectations, many participants not only met but exceeded this goal, with one individual reaching an impressive $1200. This highlights that the ride-hailing service in Singapore can be quite lucrative, challenging the notion that it is not a viable option. 21:48
@@pgobserversplease drive 12hrs yourself and see if you can get $800.
😄😄😄.....still have rooms to improve 😁😁😁
Very much doubt he's a multi-millionaire; perhaps in terms of highly illiquid and unpredictable start-up stocks. He sounded wistful when talking about his extremely successful peers.
PS: I'm an aide to people who hang around in these circles.
Google it, my friend:) Antler fund under management is $0,5 bln :)
That's *not* his personal net worth. Your clickbait title is misleading. Also, once again back to my point about highly volatile, start-up stock since that's all Antler manages.
@@MaxChernov
Whatever dude :)
Everywhere was made out of nothing. Uncle Harry separated Singapura from Malaysia and then created the marvel that is modern day Singapore. It was not nothing.
The Singapore public must learn to take credit for the success of the country. Yes, Uncle Harry inspired people and lighted the spark in them. His early speeches were like firecrackers going off. But if the majority of the citizens were incapable of greatness, the island would be a sad place that wasted all the potential it had. Many countries are like that.
Wrong. singapore was a british colony during 1800s and it started from there, from the hardship of the migrants community. Not in the 1960s as so called fishing village.
Then try to make one now,why I can't see other leaders doing it, rather than talk
Uncle Harry did not separate Singapura, but it was Malaysia initiated the separation. He was the one who initiated the merger with Malaysia but unfortunately it lasted for nearly two years only.
incredible, cuz u can save alot of taxes..0🤔
He is good , wearing Antler logo on his shirt to advertise 😊 He is not wrong to say innovation is great out of USA.
I thought this video would be very interesting because it’s a guest from Nordic country, but sad to say I find this interview like a cold over-night dish.
Mayhem it’s due to the questions or the guest’s personality.
He seems down to earth, non flashy but very virtuous signaling.
He co-found a shopping platform but he’s a minimalist, so ironic 😊
Because real life isn’t a Hollywood movie and this guy is as real as it gets
I don’t think there’s anything ironic about that. Typically the founder’s vision is to solve problem, it doesn’t their personal lifestyle has to match the service/ product the company is offering all the time
@jxjx
You have a valid point but I also want to illustrate a point on the irony:
For example, a guy broadcast on social media on his care for environment and climate change. Yet he is a regular shopper on SHEIN , the popular ultra-fast fashion online retailer. We are quite familiar with SHEIN biz strategy and disposable fashion is an environmental disaster and waste. Isn’t that ironic and hypocritical?
@@axianskin good luck in your discovery journey. You’ll uncover much much more about the world and people
Because you are billionaires.

That's all that is to Singapore.
It is a soulless city state, built on financial and commercial dog-eat -dog competitive business activity. It has no culture of its own.
It exists as a one party capitalist entity, where individuality is rare and conformity is status quo.
Where are you from? 😁
@@MaxChernov none of your business.
😂 you are so gracious
@jstone247 Obviously Max won't say anything overly critical of Singapore... but I can see what you mean and honestly I sort of agree.. except I wouldn't go as far to say it's 'soulless'.. agree with the rest of the criticism though. And Max, I'm Singaporean, and honestly if you sample enough Singaporeans you will find such a view not uncommon..
@@chowzisiong7800 While 30% may align with your perspective, it's crucial to acknowledge that a significant 70% still hold differing opinions. Among those who agree, some might do so with the intent to criticize the government, aiming to undermine its efforts. Notably, even the Prime Minister's younger brother resides in this dissenting faction, facing legal consequences for damaging the reputation of two ministers while making unsubstantiated claims in Europe who is wanted by the Singapore police for coffee session. 21:48
