You know what I just noticed? If you watched the episode “Boss Mabel”, you’ll know that saying the word “Please” gives Stan a burn sensation. But in this episode in pure desperation, he said “Please” twice. Not only is that a nice small piece of personal growth, but I think because of how saying the word worked for him in that episode but he’s willing to say it here, I think that second “please” is what convinced Mabel not to push the button.

Jason did some incredible line deliveries throughout the show, but my absolute favorite has to be the scene before this one: "All this time... all this time, Stan had them?! I can't believe it! Was anything he said to us real?! Why would he have those journals?!". It's such a desperate frustration, especially when he kicks the desk right before that last sentence. He's been trying so hard to be logical- charitable, even, but in that moment every pretense gets thrown out the window. He just feels betrayed. That exact energy gets channeled in the "I don't even know who you are!" too. He did such a great job here

What really gets me after finishing the show is that this might be the first time someone actually believed in Stan. His family thinks he sabotaged Ford's future on purpose when it was really an accident, he felt he had to con people just to survive (to the point he imitated his own brother for 30 years) and lied to Dipper and Mabel because he thought they would stop him getting his brother back. After years of no body trusting him, someone finally saw through him and that got him his brother back. I'm not crying, you're crying.

All throughout it, I thought Stan would say the words "I'm begging you!".

After enjoying the scene I began to wonder why the writers didn't have Stan use this phrase.

This is a scene I can't watch without crying. To see Mabel, the biggest bundle of energy and innocence in the whole show, break down in tears and finding herself in a position where she doesn't know what she should do or which voice she should listen to, is heartrending in a way words just can't describe.
Each character involved gets a moment. Dipper, the most vocal about his newfound distrust in his own grunkle, in that visceral, betrayed: "I don't even know who you ARE!". Mabel begins crying at this whole situation, and, oh my God, when she says: "I don't even know if you're my grunkle! I want to believe you, but...!", you begin crying as well. This poor kid is finding herself torn between logic and feeling, every move could be the last. Even goofy ol' Soos gets a moment of his own when he's willing to fight the man who has been a fatherly figure to him to protect the twins.
But the gut-punch comes with Stan. Even worse with what we find out about him in the following episode. The heartbreak in his voice and face when he asks Mabel: "You really think I'm a bad guy?!" is on par with Simba crying for help next to Mufasa's body in terms of sheer emotional weight. He already went through the heartache of being treated as if he *was* the bad guy, and before meeting the twins, he was pretty much ALONE. He had NOTHING and NO ONE. The life he knew was but a fading memory, the brother he once was close-knit to now utterly despises him and when he brings him back he doesn't even bother thanking him. And now, he's genuinely fearing that history is repeating itself, that it will happen all over again and that he'll go back to being utterly, hopelessly alone. 'You really think I'm a bad guy?!", just wtiting this line down is enough for me to cry a river. Dipper & Mabel are all he has left, and now, he's on the verge of losing THEM too and being left with nothing and no one. It's a gut-punch at its finest.

Something that I never noticed was brilliant about this scene is that while Stan could have gone into detail and revealed his past an episode early to Dipper, it still wouldn’t have changed the situation. Dipper still would have had to trust him that the Tale of Two Stans was the truth which would be hard for Dipper because he is already so paranoid and has already came to his conclusion based on the facts, and as much as he may love Stan he knows that Stan is nothing if not a professional con artist known for lying and he was lying about the waste and the secret lab and even lied about how much he’s known about Gravity Falls, making any excuse Stan could give highly speculative at best. Not to mention that the book literally spells out that if the machine is activated the world will end and so even if Stan’s excuse seemed believable, for Dipper the stakes are literally life and death with not just his life but every person in the world’s life at stake and thus it’s a lot to ask for Dipper to hinge the fate of the world on the slight chance this professional con artist is actually telling the truth. The writers really did a good job putting the audience and these characters in such a difficult spot where it really is just a matter of trust whether to believe Stan, and where no answer he could give these kids would help even if the countdown wasn’t almost out and he had time to explain. It’s really a testament to the creators and writers who brought this to life

Some people get mad at Mabel for trusting Stan, surprisingly. It's really a stalemate moment, imo, but here's my defense for Mabel: Stan might not be a good person, but he's not screwed up. Why would he want to end the whole world? What's the benefit? Even if it did end the world, deep down I'd believe it was an accident. It's just weird, even for him.
Stan may be a routine liar, but he also has the capacity for telling unrelenting truths. _"You're gonna hear some bad things about me... and some of them are true!"_

I like how trust is a very prominent theme in this show and I think Journal 3 gave a very important lesson on it, that trust should have a chance to be earned instead of being given unconditionally. Mabel and Dipper formed that trust growing up together, and it grew stronger throughout their adventures in the show and the same happened with Stan and Ford until.. that happened, and when there was a chance to reforge that trust, it didn’t work out and Ford trusted Stan even less, and Stan seemed to have little trust in Ford after that too. When he returned, Ford didn’t seem to give anyone a chance at trust which is one of the big factors that led to Weirdmageddon as he reflected that onto Dipper which resulted in Mabel being unaware of the rift and accidentally putting into Bill’s hands(WHAT MORE DO I HAVE TO SAY??? STOP BLAMING HER FOR IT YOU BIASED BLIND EYES!!!) And as told in the journal, it also didn’t bode well for the Zodiac prophecy. It’s ultimately trust that had to be rebuilt between Stan and Ford for Bill to be defeated in the last minute.
