I don't know if you're ever going to read this, or if your inktober videos are pre-recorded, but here it goes:
With dip pens, you can't write upwards. If you want line variation, draw downwards. If you want consistent lines, draw sideways. NEVER start a line where it has to be thin, specially eyes and smal facial features. Use a brush to fill spaces wider than a centimeter, or you'll scratch your paper (and hurt your hand). Wash your nibs IMMEDIATLY after use, or they'll create a sliver of ink and get thicker lines with time. Always pat them dry and try to never drop the pen with the nibs down. Keep the nibs in a tin can or something hard and small that won't let them bend. It's a real pain to get them straight again, if it's even possible. And, last tip, wash them with alcohol. Water will rust the tips overtime, alcohol evaporates faster than water.
(btw, I write with these, and sometimes do linework for watercolor, but mostly write, so these tips are from experience)
I barely know how to use this type of pen. We're supposed to ink six drawings of scenes from a children's book with these pens and this type of ink in art class, but they're so confusing.

So basically use dip pens like u use fountain pens
Another thing that is a thing to remember about dip pens and fountain pens. Don't use them the same angle as ballpoint pens, fountain pens at least are happier when used at a shallower angle if that makes sense.
Just a tip cause when I was in art class I used those pens to do calligraphy, don’t push up cause that damages the point of the nib and it won’t be useable again if u keep doing upward strokes

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about in varying your line weight. That is something I really want to work on too. It looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL when someone like Bill Watterson does it. Sometimes it's hard to know where to add the heavier lines.
heavier lines should be added in 2 or 3 ways: first one being how close or far the object is you are lining, the closer, the thicker! second way would be lightsource, the lines the furtest away from the light need to be thicker, and lastly, places where lines meet up should be tapered from out the meeting point. Hope this helps, have a try at it!

I really like that this has a bunch of focal points because it kinda keeps your eyes rotating around the piece idk why people like to have one thing you’re meant to look at, I love a busy interesting piece! I love this one!
when covering larger areas, you need to use a proportional brush and that should eliminate the streaks. it also helps to puddle a bunch of ink at the beginning of the area and push the puddle around instead of using an abundance of strokes. after you’re done pushing the puddle, dry your brush and lay it on the puddle of ink and it should soak up any excess. hope this helps!
Argh I always really try to participate in inktober, but my perception of time is really wonky. So i just always plan to start but then it’s the first of October and then the second and third and I still haven’t drawn anything. But I really enjoy seeing other people doing it... And especially you!! Well I just really like your videos in general, but seeing you draw from prompts are always so entertaining
haha, I'd be lieing if I said thats never happened to me. just pick up whenever you can. don't stress out about doing every single day. just enjoy yourself!

I have the opposite problem. I get too excited and do everything before october even starts.
Same problem happened with me! When I didn’t have time I’d just do a simple doodle haha.
I feel you on the time perception! Mine is terrible. Its been a running joke for years that I was born without a functioning body clock. I nearly failed a lot of subjects at school/university which focused on coursework not because I couldn't do the work needed, but because the deadline was months away and all my brain could grasp was that it was months away even as the days went by. Then it would be the week or days before the deadline and I'd have to try to rush everything in what little time I had left.
Even on a daily scale I'm terrible. Last time I looked at the clock it was 11.30pm and now its 4am and I don't even know how.
And those 30 days of x challenges which go round tumblr? There is one for corsetry and the idea is that each day you answer a question and I always end up starting and never finishing. The same happened in April when I tried to do one about being autistic. Posted it with the intention to go back and fill it in. Did the first couple of questions, saved it to drafts because I got tired and needed a break. Then forgot about it until months later.

For Poisonous I drew a skeleton sitting in a little grass patch with the “Lily of the Valley” flowers, because those flowers are poisonous! I loved this art btw ❤️

Quick tip, since I dont hear it in this, but use the ink from the top left to the bottom right if right handed and for left handed go top right to bottom left. This is something great to keep in mind. Enjoy playing with your inks!

When I first studied dip/fountain pens I had trouble achieving desired lines. A practice that I found to solve my issue was practicing calligraphy. I enjoy drawing as well as writing and exploring calligraphy gave me an appreciation for aesthetic writing. Also combining calligraphy with art may spark a few Inktober ideas.
I struggled with whether or not to buy inks and nibs for this. In the end, I did not, but watching your initial experience -- you're far more graceful with frustration than I could be.
I've been watching your unboxing videos and find myself giggling and admire spontaneity. I think this one stands out simply because of your openness to learn a new medium.

Someone explained line variation to me once- the out lines should be thickest and getting thicker as the object gets closer to the viewer and details should be thin.. for example a hand or arm sitting in in front of the torso should have a thicker outline than anything behind it......... which sounds all good and fun but I constantly forget to do it D: execution is hard..

@Um Loom Well you may think Nagini the horcrux of Voldemort is the only one but no she isn't. In the Indian culture there are many people who can turn into snakes and they all are called Nagini and it's done without the curse you are talking about. I've been using dip pens since around 1987, every ink under the sun and have about thirty years of experience as an art supply retailer and, concurrently, a freelance cartoonist and illustrator and I just want to let you know that I think this video is wonderful. I'm sorry to see all the "thumbs down" you got because I think you got the main points right: fun and exploration. Here's to Inktober 2020!
I believe that dip pens are like brush liners in the way that they can vary in line thickness. But multiliner that in the fact that you can control it more than a brush pen.

This year is the first time i do Inktober.....well sort of. Since I only have pens for line art and markers, I' ve decided to use only my line art pen, a pencil and a red marker ( for the blood >:3 ). So no colour pencils aloud. And I also decided to write a little story by each prompt ,because I tought that would be really fun. I really like it so far and I hope that I will finish it when inktober ends.

Another fun fact: In German there's an entirely different word for it.
Normal ink (for fountain pens) is called "Tinte".
Indian ink is called "Tusche".

And india ink is η σινική μελάνη (she) which translates as china ink

I love watching your videos because your voice is so relaxing to me, I don’t know how 🤷🏼♀️, and I have been in a little bit of a slump with art lately, I usually stick to canvases and acrylic paint and I’ve been doing that for years now but I finished a piece and had no inspiration at all for days and I wanted to create something but when I found your channel I got inspired by your art. I’ve never really drawn much because I didn’t really have the patience for it but with the way you describe things and use different supplies it helped me get out of my slump and I just really love your channel and I am so so glad I found it. Thank you for sharing your art!

Zebra G/Nikki G are my fav drawing/writing nibs.
Brause has a Fountain Pen that accepts the Zebra G.#6.
Cleaning the nib tip up to below the G helps to retain the ink when you dip. Cleaning with toothpaste, then water and carefully wipe dry being careful not to damage the nib when you lightly wipe. Be sure your tine tips are aligned too. There are dryer inks and wetter inks. I find Martin’s to be very wet.
When you draw keep your angle low to the page. On your up stroke your pressure is ever so light on a feather like contact. Down strokes are still feather light for pressure varies line.

Yes, I just got set #2 and I've used my water brushes with the ink and it flows just like watercolor but dries permanent! I'm so in love with these inks!

So I was thinking about how I was too broke to but a pack of colored inks, then realized that I could use colored writing pens! Cheap hacks!
