Calgary pet owners raise concerns over "nightmare experiences" at pet hospital

  • Some Calgary pet owners are issuing a warning over what they call "nightmare experiences" at a local animal hospital. Both say they were refused care after raising concerns about their animals' treatment.
Julie Krivitsky said she brought her cat Matilda to the VCA Animal Emergency Centre in southeast Calgary after the cat stopped eating and drinking. The cat was discharged about two days later, with recommendations for her continued treatment with VCA.
But Krivitsky said Matilda didn’t seem like herself when she visited each evening in the hospital. She said, at the time, staff told her that Matilda had ripped her IV bag and escaped her kennel for some time during the stay. When she raised concerns about the animal’s care, she said she was told not to come back.
In a statement to Global News, VCA Canada said “the health and well-being of our patients are our top priority, and we take great pride in providing the highest quality of medicine for all pets entrusted to us.” VCA Canada said the details referenced in Krivitsky’s story are “overwhelmingly out of context” but could not speak to Fraser’s circumstances.

The big problem is the corporatization of veterinary medicine. The majority of privately owned veterinary practices have been bought up by big corporations, including VCA. Mars Inc (the chocolate bar company) has the largest market share of veterinary hospitals. The end result is that your pet is no longer considered a patient, but a customer, and that the driver is no longer to provide the best care, but to make the largest profit. Veterinarians will now even go as far as recommending totally unnecessary procedures on the back of your innocent pet who will suffer needlessly. It's criminal and has stopped me from adopting a new dog, after my 13-year-old dog passed away last year.

Our vet had to leave VCA because she was too caring. They have the best specialists and equipment though. Sigh.

My pets have all passed away due to old age, but I still have unpleasant memories of when I used to take them to the vet. The vet clinic was always trying to bill me for as much as they possibly could and they would show a real "attitude" if I didn't approve every estimate that they prepared for me. Finally, I was able to find an independent vet clinic that was half price and provided much better service.

Be careful where you take your pet. I had to go through numerous vets to find a good one. I don't know how some of these people are getting licenses. It's almost as though they're bought on the internet. And some of these emergency hospitals are staffed by people who should never be in this industry.

VCA is the most expensive clinic, their staff will even tell you that. They cost over double what most other clinics will charge. They will also upsell you things you dont need
VCA is owned by the billionaire family that owns Mars candy

Yeah that's right public Healthcare is just flawless. Report coming out that Ontario 2.5 million people don't have a family doctor. Should we go on with the wait times and the lack of hospital care and everything else? Let's make veterinarian health public so that we can have a long Waits and no one can find a veterinarian. Good job you're so smart. Another day another example of Zack being completely and utterly wrong do the opposite of what Zach recommends

This is a timely post. I put aside my suspicion of a possible conflict of interest (possible relation to police) with the vets (its a professional right) and when I had called around there was no other vets taking on new pets. Anyway the vet that gave him shots in the spring i asked about his weight, the vet said he was fine no change in food required. She didnt say anything about possible dehydration or anything. Well i think a neighbor has been giving my cat something (i suspected before but police allowed people to poison me so no point) its hard to keep him in and i try to let him out for short times but a couple times he has disappeared for hours and the last two days he has not been himself. I am on a 63.00 budget a month because I have been frauded and police refuse to look into it and tomorrow I have to call and try a different vet and seek temporary financial help. I hope I am not met with this kinda drama. Feeling so helpless and hopeless.

We’ve been bringing our dog to VCA Care for treatments for years and by now probably relied on most of the specialists in the building. We never encountered any issues with care, quite the opposite, and I’d trust the doctors there with my own life. I’m disappointed to see such a cherry picked one sided story which may discourage those with legitimate concerns from seeking help for their animals.
Since this is an emergency animal hospital operating on a triage basis, I’m not at all surprised that chipped teeth were given low priority over life saving cases. And what did they expect to pay for an emergency service anyway? Responsible animal owners have pet insurance.
Lastly, if things go as far as you being asked to leave, then clearly you are the problem.
