Some people say they "cycle" their tanks by just putting fish food in it to create ammonia. I don't like that idea because it's a race for good and bad bacteria. I think in an established tank, things like detritis worms and seed shrimp will assure the bad bacteria does not win the race by breaking the food down mostly in their guts.
