  • Fascinating find in the Marchant archive. On Jan 1st, 1950 CBS gathered all of its news correspondents together to reflect on the previous half century and talk about what may be coming. 74 years later it is super interesting to hear their perspective. World War II was barely 5 years in the past, the Cold War had barely started, Harry Truman was US president and Joseph Stalin was still in power in the USSR. I’m sure this group of reporters would have loved to have our perspective many years later. Certainly - it is a very US-centric point of view.

? I'm not sure what this has to do with the Mid Century Program?

CBS scheduled "FIVE OUT OF FIFTY" as a 15 minute "filler" program to compliment the theme of "Mid-Century". (although it wasn't listed in the radio schedule of the NEW YORK TIMES, the WASHINGTON POST did).

Ir was a "filler" program that CBS scheduled, which tied in with the previous program's "mid-century" theme. Besides, it also helped "awaken" those listeners who might have "dozed off" during the previous 45 minutes, so that they'd be *SURE* to stay tuned for "THE PRUDENTIAL FAMILY HOUR" at 6pm(et). 😉
