When the tomb of St. Peter was discovered in the 1950's under St. Peter's Basilica it contained the bones of a robust man aged 60-70 years old. There were no foot bones present and it was speculated that the Romans had trouble prying the nails out and decided to just hack them off.

There was a man in his early 20âs exploring one of the American cave systems who got stuck upside-down and I believe it took him a little over 24 hours to die...and he was a fit younger man. They ended up sealing the cave entrance, essentially making it a tomb for him because they couldnât remove the body.

Since Saint Peter's cross is upside down(the way he was crucified), his cross symbol became popular. Some people didn't know what his cross meant, so the people who didn't know what it meant believed that an inverted cross is a satanic symbol. The Wikipedia article says, âŠâtraditionally used as a Christian symbol, but in recent times also used as an anti-Christian symbol. In Christianity, it is associated with the martyrdom of Peter the Apostle.â

I like that you can talk about these stories and characters in association with stories to remind people about how cruel an empire can be. People use this term "crucified me" over the most mundane responses sometimes probably not aware of how citizens used to be crucified for mundane reasons by the Romans.
Interesting point!

According the bible, Jesus was crucified once. He died on the cross, and his final words were "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit" (NIV). Jesus didn't die until he knew he wanted to. He rose 3 days later and ascended to heaven shortly after.
The reason for his crucification was because he had claimed to be the King and Pilate was pressured by the people to be killed.
Actually, we don't exactly know what was Jesus' last words.
But yeah, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit" is most probably his last words since it lines up with the rest of the Gospels and also logic.
@@mathewjose4753 but also it is finished according to John
The pharisee's were threatened by Pilate to condemn Jesus to death, according to the jews.
Many decieved by the so called Jesus. Tools of Greedy and Abusive peoples.. ot must destroyed so no one will decieved and stop the curse once and for all.
I'm sure that what you said is true because in the Bible, there really wasn't a second crucifixion of Jesus.
There was a researcher that studied crucifixion, and concluded that the palms were not nailed, but the wrists. A nail will pull right through a personâs thin, flat hang, yet hold strongly driven in among the closely spaced bones of the wrist area. The researcher actually crucified corpse, and studied how weight distribution affected how well the victim would stay put.morbid, but logical.
The victims feet were nailed to the sides of the upright the feet were nailed through the heel bones. And normally they only carried the cross beam as the vertical post was permanently in the ground.
Why the heel bones? in 1968 in literally the suburbs of Jerusalem there was found an Ossuary a bone box containing the remains of a crucified man who was crucified around the time of Jesus Christ. His name is Yehohanan son of Hagakol the crucifixion spike is still embedded in his right heel bone. The tradition that Peter was crucified in Rome is exactly that. Tradition. In the early 1950's a grave site near the Mount of Olives, I want to be sure but I believe the name of the church there is called Dominus Flevit. Where there are Ossuaries of different Biblical characters. One for Mary and her sister Martha, Ananias and Sapphira the couple who mysteriously die in Acts chapter 5, and the Ossuary of one Shimon Bar Yonah. Simon son of Jonah is Peter's given name. Jesus gave him the name Peter Petros in Greek and Kepha in Aramaic both terms mean a stone. Jesus gave Simon Bar-Jonah the name Peter because of his Declaration of who Jesus is when Jesus asks "Who do you say that I am?" To which Peter responds "You are the Christ. The Son of the living God." Matthew 16.
I think peter didn't feel worthy die the same way as his Messiah, so he requested to be crucified upside down. My dad is the pastor at my church so I learn a lot from his sermons and I can easily ask him questions if im confused.

2:27 if I remember correctly, the art behind it was that you would be left dangling with your arms above your head, making it hard to breathe, forcing you to use your arms to carry yourself up to get a breath, but once you tired out, you eventually died from that
You'd have to lift up on your pierced hands and feet which would cause immense pain just to try to breath. The very act of trying to survive (which some actually did on occasion) was how they killed you.
I don't get why so many people think this position is "worse" than the regular direction for a crucification. With his age and health, the blood rushing to his head, while upside down, would cause dizziness and he would pass out in less than 24 hours, before a major feeling of asphyxiation would even take place. Aka. He'd most likely die while not even conscious.
Compared to the regular position, where you're out in scorching heat for possibly days, dying slowly of metal poisoning from the nails, dehydration and starvation, while potentially being picked at and bit into by wild animals. Yeah.. I think if Peter HAD to die via crucification, upside down was the better, faster way to go.
Less than 24 hours? You know Jesus died in 6 hours right?
@@dwaynethewokjohnson6646 realize he was also stabbed by one of the soldiers, which isn't common place with this practice. Realize too, Jesus may have never died but been close and unconscious when taken down, then healed and recovered after. If we focus solely on how the body would react to this punishment, a person could easily last multiple days in the upright position. So no, it's still not a worse way to go, if upside down.
Itâs funny how the inverted cross is a satanic symbol yet the story of it is that saint Peter chose to be crucified upside down because he believed that he didnât deserve to be crucified the same way as Jesus

In a dark time amongst this countrys political madness. There's light in my week when I see a new Infographics show.
A 45kg crossbeam would have taken some carrying, even if the person had not been thrashed with a Roman cat of nine tails 39 times. A Roman cat of nine tails is much more horrific than a British cat of nine tails. The marks left by the Roman cat of nine tails would have been like the scratches of a lion or tiger, rather than like the scratches of a house cat.
You didnât finish your first sentance
It often cleaved flesh from bone if used properly. Many who were crucified afterwards, including Jesus, died much sooner than they otherwise would have as a result of the horrific mutilation and blood loss already suffered by getting whipped half to death, assuming, of course, that the victim didn't just die from the whipping itself.
"That's about the weight of a mildly obese male german shepard dog." Something I didn't ever think I'd hear.....but earned an inappropriate laugh from me.

When it broke it was undeniable it sounded like taking a wooden broom stick and breaking it over your knee. I told the guy playing second base I think I broke my leg I heard it brake. The guy playing second base said yeah I heard it too. Not to mention my toes were in the 7 oâclock position. I instinctively grabbed my foot and rotated it straight. My back was to the dugout and all my buddies thought I twisted my ankle and they told me to walk it off. I just sat there and told the guy playing second base to tell them I broke my leg. Interestingly I felt no pain. Then eventually one of my buddies came over by me. He told me you better walk it off. Of course my foot was straight now and when he said that it was just so funny to me that I just started laughing. I couldnât stop laughing. I tell you the story because in hindsight I was in shock.
