Just saw the movie. I nearly peed my pants when I heard Benedict Cumberbatch's voice acting skills…and at the end when he says "I am Death", I got so many chills down my spine...
I feel that was the only good part of the movie. They added way to many extraneous scenes, and Peter Jackson making up a dwarf-elf love story was ridiculous and absurd.
So I was at the premiere for catching fire and the trailer for Desolation of Smaug came on and I was doing a fairly decent job holding in my fangirling until Smaug/Sherlock/Benedict started talking and I just completely lost it because HIS VOICE I just couldn't keep my fangirl in and I'm pretty sure everyone in the building could hear my squeals of happiness... I have no regrets (other than the fact that none of my friends understood and tried to get me to shut up... I pity the mortals)

Usulcardo It actually is not the same. There's a slight distortion on the higher freq's, in the trailer, but in the movie there's none. So they did re-edit his voice in the last stage of production.
Omgosh I just showed this to my sister who has never heard him as smaug before and she was like HOLY SHIT THAT AWESOME and I preceded to freak out for the next 10 minutes.... No regrets

You see, Smaug wasn't the only Dragon in Middle-Earth, before then there were greater, more terrible beasts like Glaurung, The father of dragons, and Ancholon The Black, I feel they might reference either of them as Smaug as a spawn like how the Spiders are a spawn of Ungoliant.
Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant, I'm merely guessing but I'm certain they're going to mention one of the Dragons from the prequel stories since, well that's pretty much what PJ's going for, tying in all of Tolkien's stories into one... if you can call it that. If what I'm typing still doesn't make sense I apologize, it's usually easier for me to clarify in person.
I think they lowered the bass for the theater version a bit. Perhaps to avoid damaging the speakers or it maybe a bit intense for some ears? He still sounds very good so no real complaints.
I think you may be right, although i don't know if it was for the speakers but more just general balance. I've got the DVD sound versions on my channel and the base and clarity is far, FAR more intense than the cinema. Like night and day.
