I found this song very emotional, especially the bit where Par walks up to the cross and carves 2021 into it 😢
Two of my great grandads and a great uncle served in the trenches of WW1. All were killed.
One wrote home about this very event saying it was an odd feeling meeting the ‘enemy’, they were just ordinary men like themselves. Most had never even been out of the area they were born, in never mind seeing the horrors of war before. It was a particularly hellish, dehumanising and pointless war where the only victor was death.
Thanks for your great reaction 🤗

Welcome to the Sabaton Fandom, a few things to remember: 1) their music videos are pretty much always epic 2) their live performance videos are incredible 3) their Lyric videos are some of the best ever made because they add additional information on the songs in them 4) they have a second channel called Sabaton History, worth checking out
I'd suggest Hell and Back (music video), Devil Dogs (lyric), 40:1 (live at Woodstock), Bismark (music video), there's also Red Barron (live) ah, the list just goes on

Sabaton is a Swedish band that writes and sings about Actual historic events, battles, moments of heroism and wars.
They will be releasing their 10th studio album on March 4th 2022.
Nice thing about them is that their video's never blocked so it's CZcams safe. (except for some Wacken video's that gets blocked by Wacken)
If you really want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these:
(These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use)
[live at Woodstock 2012]: Ghost Division, 40:1 and Uprising
[Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krig (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling
[Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama and The lost betallion
[Music Video's]: Bismarck, Steel Commanders, Defence of Moscow, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising & Seven Pillars of wisdom
[Animated History Video's]: Night Witches and No Bullets Fly (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's)
    [Covers]: Kingdom Come [Offical video]
and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell.

That cross still stands at the exact place it was erected in 1914 at the side of a nowadays field, not the original anymore, but a replica. The location is in the middle of what used to be the no man's land during the first battle of Ypres, it is located near Commines-Warneton (Belgium) not far from the French border, not one day passes without fresh flowers, or even footballs being placed at the base of the cross, remembrance counts! Lest we forget

The story (from one of the places the truce happened) was that they heard german soldiers sing Oh holy night in german, and the british responded with the same song but in english. Made them realize "shit, we all have the same history and we all just wanna chill on christmas, lets just see if we can take one day and be civil to eachother".

    • @Davidkiser13
      @Davidkiser13 Před 2 lety +3

Yup they were singing stille nacht (silent night) then the British starting sing oh holy night. And that’s kind of how it all started after the gunfire had seized.

    • @Thevicar045
      @Thevicar045 Před 2 lety +4

It's also of note that both sides were told by their superiors that the war would be over by Christmas. It was these very superiors that made sure no Xmas truces happened again with the threat of facing a firing squad.

If you want something to top this one emotionally then check out "No bullets fly" (the animated story version) or if you want to se another one with a really high level production then check out "Bismarck". After those, the Sabaton army will probably arrive here and give you the complete list. Chances are none of their songs will disappoint you.
Oh, also, check out "En livstid i krig" (A lifetime at war), the live version from Gothenburg. Make sure to activate the subtitles.

In case no one has said it, that cross is a real memorial! It was erected in 1999, on the 85th anniversary of the Christmas Truce by a group calling themselves The Khaki Chums. It stands in Ypres, Belgium, about 20 miles from the boarder with France, where some of the fiercest fighting took place.

  • @jamesmccrea4871
    @jamesmccrea4871 Před 2 lety +7

It's a cross between Carol of the Bells and Moonlight Sonata. They are from Finland.
The band is the main characters, and they are split between the Allies and the Germans. Joakim, Par, and Hannes is on the German side, Joakim is the singer, Par is the bassist and writing the letter, Hannes is the drummer and the first man over the top (the guy with the flashbacks). Tommy is the solo guitarist, he dressed as early French in the blue and red, and Chris, guitarist) is the first Ally over the top, he's dressed as a British officer in the dull green.
The end credits singer is Floor Jensen, lead singer of Nightwish and Hannes' wife.

The stories I've heard as a child are now being put to my favorite music! Please react to more. SABATON. They do all of their own research. They have a second channel Sabaton History. They work with an actual historian and create videos about the stories their songs are based on. BTW, I see reacted to NIGHTWISH. Well, Hannes in the video is their drummer. He is married to FLOOR JANSEN OF NIGHTWISH. That is the female voice singing at the end. 💕🙏🇺🇸

The truly magical thing about that Christmas truce is the upper brass of both countries did not approve it. It was an agreement created and upheld by the soldiers on the front lines themselves.
The upper brass where so pissed that the next year both sides forced their artillery to pound the lines all Christmas day.

I saw a video that was posted 4 years ago where a nazi (she was 14 during the war, so she likely grew up indoctrinated as a hitler youth) met with a jewish woman who survived the holocaust, they were able to sit down and have a civil conversation with each other. Then you see this video where we are remembering the truce where even in the brutal trench warfare of ww1 soldiers of both sides came together to celebrate a common holiday.
Now look at the American people today, we cant even seem to celebrate a holiday if someone voted different, or even has a different point of view and there is no civil discourse anymore, everyone has their own little echo chambers.
Sorry if thats kind of a rant, but loved your reaction, i spent many holidays away from home in my short time of service, Sabaton has a massive collection of extremely good songs, this one is really heavy, but there are a few more you would probably appreciate.
Yarnhub animated story for both "night witches", and "no bullets fly"
And the official music video for "to hell and back" the story is of audi murphy (the most decorated us soldier in our armed forces history) and his battles with ptsd even after the war.
Like i said great reaction, i subbed keep up the good work.

One correction-- the Axis wasn't formed until WWII. The Great War, (WWI) was the killer of empires, namely The German Empire and the Austrian-Hungarian Empire who were part of the Central Powers. The Allies were called the "Allied Powers". The Christmas Truce (German: Weihnachtsfrieden; French: Trêve de Noël) took place on December 24th until December 26th, 1914. Many of these truces happened all across the Western Front on the front line which was about about 50 miles from Paris, France.
Henry Williamson a nineteen-year-old private in the London Rifle Brigade, wrote to his mother about the actual Christmas Truce:
Dear Mother, I am writing from the trenches. It is 11 o'clock in the morning. Beside me is a coke fire, opposite me a 'dug-out' (wet) with straw in it. The ground is sloppy in the actual trench, but frozen elsewhere. In my mouth is a pipe presented by the Princess Mary. In the pipe is tobacco. Of course, you say. But wait. In the pipe is German tobacco. Haha, you say, from a prisoner or found in a captured trench. Oh dear, no! From a German soldier. Yes a live German soldier from his own trench. Yesterday the British & Germans met & shook hands in the Ground between the trenches, & exchanged souvenirs, & shook hands. Yes, all day Xmas day, & as I write. Marvelous, isn't it?

Well, now you have a wonderful journey ahead of you. Sabaton is a band from Sweden who's songs are about historical wars and battles, they even have their own Sabaton History channel where they tell the actual history of the battles in their songs. Suggestions to continue with are "Devil Dogs" (about the battle of Belleau Wood and how the US Marines got their nickname), "No Bullets Fly" (about how a german fighterpilot escorted an allied bomber to safety), "Defence of Moscow" (how the russians beat back the Nazis) and "En livstid i krig" (the live version from Gothenburg in Swedish with the captions on; it's about how a youth is drafted to fight for Sweden in the 30 year war - 1618-1648).
EDIT: Also, remember to never stop a Sabaton song until it ends by itself, more often than not they have some kind of message after the song has ended.

This truce wasn't authorized by any of the military commando it was a spontaneous thing where the German soldiers took the initative. After the truce the soldiers didn't wanna keep fighting which is very much understandable. However this wasn't popular within the miltary commando on both sides and some actually got executed for not following orders.

the holy night referance is becuse in history the germans sung holy night also the referance we hear "voices sang from no mans land" is what the allies heard.
there were actual soccer/football games during the christmas truce
the truce was never official is the thing it was soldiers who made it and it was over the entire western front almost ,some holding up to almost new year only to be broken up by higher ups with artillary volleys.

Great reaction! You are spot on regardning how society has lost its way. We are all humans, with the same struggles, no matter what layer of political preference or religious belief we have.
Sabaton (the name comes from foot armor of medieval knights) is a Swedish metal band that has been around since the 90s. Pretty much all their music is based on actual historic events, all related to war. They even have a Sabaton History Channel which explains the story behind many of the songs more deeply. The main difference between Sabaton and other bands is that they also sing about the really dark chapters, both from a soldiers perspective and overall. My recommendations (as a native Swede):
-En Livstid i Krig (A lifetime of war) Live from Gothenburg, Sweden- The thoughts of a soldier in the 30-year war (1618-1648) . Use captions
    czcams.com/video/WBs3G1PvyfM/video.html
    - No Bullets Fly About a german fighter pilot that risked his life to save the pilot of a badly shot up B-17 in WWII (Amazing story)
    czcams.com/video/dslO-3GgenY/video.html
-Bismarck - About the German battleship Bismarck in WWII. Really nice video production to a great song.
    czcams.com/video/oVWEb-At8yc/video.html
    - They Final Solution - A really sad,yet good, song about the horrors of the holocaust of WWII.
    czcams.com/video/_O3awC4mv4Q/video.html
There are so many more great songs and stories, but can't list them all.
Tried to keep it short, but didn't go as intended :)

I kind of feel the opposite of your words at the end. I can't feel pride for those who choose to participate in killing in yet another meaningless war. But I feel an enormous pride for all those soldiers that for one moment instead chose humanity, refused to follow orders and instead met their enemies as friends and fellow humans. Who, even when direct orders had gone out to fraternize with the enemy, ignored them. There's why I find the pride. And the shame for those generals and officers who did everything to stop another such moment.

Sabaton are interestingly enough (not sure if this goes for all members but still) Pacifists who hasn't served in the military, but they are history buffs and thought; if we are going to write lyrics, we might as well do lyrics that tells important stories about our history so that we can remember and not repeat our mistakes. There are songs about the horrors of warfare but also heroics of the humans who took part in it. They have songs about heroes and horrors from all sides of wars. No one gets a free pass and no one gets left out from praise for when they did heroic deeds.
I've learned more about the history of war in humanity's time from Sabaton than I ever did from school

The struggle was more of a human struggle and it is today but nowadays rather than duels or battles for glory or honor is stripped with pure efficiency and effectiveness since back then you stabbed a man whilst looking into his eyes, you shot a child so far and yet so close, now it’s either self guided munitions or drones, and the humanity of warfare is shed with nappy wearing pen pushers which thinks that sneezing should be a human rights violation. And this isn’t to say that soldiers today have it easy CHRIST NO but the nature of warfare is soo much different from say as a Roman legion marching ten miles in a day, build a fortress and then off to battle or during the nepolionic era when discipline and rate of fire was vital in securing victory, ww1 was simply throw as many troops at a well fortified and entrenched position and see what happens, ww2 became a war of mobilization and mobility be it mobilizing the population and workforce to build more and better things or getting from point A to Point B
