    Which one is your favorite?
I thought I’d compare all my ride cymbals. Granted, cymbals have individual character, and what sounds good on one song or genre may end up sounding totally different in another setting. Personally, I like them all!
The standouts to me were the Paiste Thin Flat Ride, the 19” Avedis with rivets, and the Avedis Take Five 20”. The Paiste thin flat ride, while significantly quieter than all the others, has such clear “ping” quality and maintains a smooth consistent sound. The sizzle cymbal, Avedis 19” with rivets, sets its own kind of mood, and the Avedis Take Five 20”, as well as the 1960’s 21” Avedis have a classic jazz sound, quite appropriate to a tune like this. It’s also worth noting that the 18” Paiste 2002 crash has a decent ride sound if you don’t play it too hard.
    Cymbals in order:
    1. 20” Zildjian Avedis Take Five Reissue 2186g
    2. 21” 1960’s Zildjian Avedis 2762g
    3. 19” 1960’s Zildjian Avedis Medium Ride with six small rivets 2044g
    4. 18” Paiste 2002 Crash 1480g
    5. 20” 1971 Paiste Thin Flat Ride 2208g
    6. 24” Paiste 2002 Ride 3904g
Sticks used: Vic Firth Steve Gadd Signature Series, wood barrel tip.

Dave, thanks for the response my CZcams account has some issues where I am not getting notified when people respond to my messages and also I cannot respond to your message I have to put a new one in but I will respond this way hopefully you will see that I'm responding to your last comment but thank you for the input I agree a stick can make a huge difference in the sound of the cymbal and I am not sure why they don't list the stick personally I think John Riley should play all the Take 5 reissues because it's part of the whole introduction that he did when they first hit the Memphis Drum Shop. But the other guys do a good job it's just John Riley best captures the feel and basically all of the Joe Morello take five symbols should be played along with a Take 5 track that's the whole point of this symbol I think they just lost focus with that

I love when John Riley does the demos. He’s sold me several! 😀
Riley has his own model of stick. It’s nice. Great for jazz and ride cymbals. I would think that’s what he is using here, but no guarantees, but it probably is. Memphis Drums really could list the sticks used.
      Take care,
      Dave

Nice comparison! When you received the Take 5 reissue did it sound like it did in the video from Memphis Drum Shop? They seem to do a really good job just wondering your opinion compared to when you had it in the room with you and you are obviously a real Aficionado here so your opinion counts...? Thanks, Bob

Thanks Bob! I appreciate your kind words!
Yes, Memphis Drums does a great job on their videos!! I’ve purchased quite a few unique cymbals from them based solely on their demo and have never been let down!
I wish they would list the stick they’re using in each video. I assume when it’s a John Riley demo, he’s using his model of sticks.
I’ve ended up collecting quite a few different sticks for jazz playing and each can make the cymbal sound entirely different. I find probably the most versatile jazz ride stick I like is the Peter Erskine Ride Stick- gets a great sound out of your cymbals!

Dave, I forgot to ask you what the weight of your take 5 ride is? I purchased one several months ago and it was 2197 grams and it is a great all-around ride that is really close to Morelos recording. I can tell from the recording that it is more of a medium ride is there is a bit of a ping going on and he doesn't really crash it at all from the studio recording anyway except right at the end he gives it a slight tap but we know the weight is John Riley disclose 2192 gram so anything close to that will give you that sort of balance with pitch and tone but each one of these symbols are unique I listen to the demonstrations and each one sounds a little different but back to your question about what stick do they use... They should list it in I think I probably will drop them an email about it for us Joe Morello Geeks to spaz out on...lol. Peace, Bob Marszalek

      Hello Bob
      Great hearing from you!
That’s awesome about your Take 5 ride!! Congratulations!! My weight is 2186g, and at the time, the closest to my ears to the original. Memphis recently listed one at a near similar weight that had the same sound. I imagine yours is close too!!!

@@DavesTrumpet yes it sounds close is I think a modern ride can get but the original of course is always better... I think the weight range we picked is best because we are only about 10 grams apart in their weight and the best examples seem to be close to that. Thanks for the info and keep on swinging! Peace, Bob
