Phil Neal used to babysit for me & my sister in the 60s when he was at Northampton town .
My dad John Fairbrother was no' 10 for NTFC , i was at the town v manU cup game in 1970 when they lost 2-8 , George Best scored 6 goals, i was nearly 8 yrs old and don't remember anything tbh, my mother said i was reading comic books rather than the game.
Watching full highlights on utube my dad gets put through on goal within 5 mins and would only have Stepney to beat but Crerand clips his heels bringing him down on the edge of the penalty area , ref doesn't give the foul and waves play to carry on.
Just watching it im shouting at the screen/ ref for not giving the foul and my dad for not complaining, but he just gets up and carries on.
Nowadays it would be a straight red card, or if not given half the team would be in the refs face ..
    Different times , lol ..

Thanks for this. I never saw him play but I know his name of course. They were different times indeed, not least the quality of the pitches, but you are right the game was played and refereed very different back then.

@@stevestubberfield that's really nice to hear,
I don't really don't remember my dad playing, I wish I HAD payed more attention.
But i guess it was just normal to me, growing up with a dad who played football.
That's why it's great to see him on utube the full highlights of the manU game ,
I know my mother remembers him being clipped by Pat Crerand just outside the penalty area ( we spoke about it recently) , she could be quite fiesty re dad , shouting at refs , I even remember after one game she waited outside after for the local press guy , who'd said something about my dad the week before that had annoyed her, and she gave him a right telling off , lol , she was only tiny but her family came from east London and growing up with 3 older sisters and a brother well , lol .
My dad was her first bf, ( she had a strict father, catholic Irish, eastend)
When they first met each other at a 'soda-bar , and then started dating , he was working part time at a local wood yard , she didn't know he was playing for Watford until she took him home to meet her dad and her brother told her .
He was quiet like that , he was and still is a really laid back guy .
      He just liked playing football.
If it was me I would've been telling all the girls I was a professional footballer, lol .
.my dad used to call Frank his "minder', he says he was a great player and goalscorer, and would often take out defenders who were giving him "my dad" stick at corners etc ,
He was a big fella Frank and a good guy, I was only born in 62 so I don't remember all the players but I do remember him, and Graham Felton, I can close my eyes and picture GF back in those times ,fair hair and side burns ,wearing the latest gear .
      Always smart .
I remember him & his gf ( possibly wife!? ) baby sitting for me and my little sister, I also remember Phil Neal babysitting ..
It's a shame you can't transfer your memories of him playing to utube,
A few years after he left Northampton, someone to do with the club told him Sheffield Wednesday tried to buy him the season before they went down to div 2
My dad didn't have a clue, players in those days didn't hear about things like that.
After his best playing days, he heard about another team in div 1 & a couple in Div 2 trying to buy him, inc a top Dutch club .
But he has no regrets, he considers himself lucky to have earned a living playing football.

Thank you for the reply .,a very interesting read....don't know how true it is but rumours were going around that Chelsea were interested in Graham Felton....probably playground gossip.....thanks once again.@@kevwhufc8640
