WOW man, just seen this clip. The wolf Maugrim was was played exceptionally well, my hats off to the dude who played him. So many years of nightmares due to that wolf!
Maugrim gave me so many nightmares too! I had dreams of him coming and killing me. I was terrified of this scene for years but looking at it now as adult I kinda just laugh cause he was kinda pathetic
I love this version. Used to watch this late at night on Saturdays on PBS when I was a kid. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Disney version too, but I saw this one first
I love this! This was my favorite as a kid! And that Asland puppet, it may not be as advanced as effects today, but it was beautiful, & still is quite impressive even now
The device of transition to a stage with red lighting for Peter's confrontation with Maugrim in those moments that needed to be removed for theatrical effectiveness is genius.
Its a shame how many people don't really talk about this version anymore, I love this version and know all the words hehehe anyway they did an AMAZING job casting Richard Dempsey as Peter he was only 14 when he made this and I love him he's so inspiring!!!! :D
That wolf serious scared the crap out of me when I was little!!!! WOW! Still creeps me out, but more important, gets the point across! You don't need million dollar CG effects to scare somebody or prove a point.
it was in a companion book, not in the series. When I was little, I had all 7 books and another book... I think called the Narnia Companion or something like that. That book said it. *sigh* I wish I still had it, it had such beautiful pictures.
This one of the most realistic fights ever put to film both Peter and Maugrim circling each other each looking for an opening both very cautious when they attack it just fells right because their not hacking and slashing it doesn't have a look good flashy it fells a lot more like a real fight and both are trying to kill the other with out being killed themselves
Maugrim is presented as a credible threat in this? I'm surprised that Peter wasn't killed by way of laughing so hard. I expected Maugrim to break into a rousing rendition of "Mr. Mistoffelees"
This series was great and i loved it, but i always felt Lewis' work needed, no deserved, to have a major motion picture with a full hollywood budget and I was very pleased with that product as well. This was a mini series so it obviously had more story. Though, even as a child i was unable to suspend reality for a talking stuffed animal. Aslan made me laugh. the Aslan in the Disney movie was SICK!!
I know everybody liked Maugrim and likes the White Witch, but clearly the Dwarf is the best one in the cast. His levelheadedness, pragmatic villainy, and unfazed "it's a living" attitude, really help this adaptation.
Man the fight with the wolf in this blows the film adaptation out of the water. They pussed out hardcore with the LWW film version. I mean come on this was in the 80s and didn't show anything particularly gruesome and it's about 50x better.
the manly looking trees are actually living trees as opposed to tree spirits, which are female. That was in one of the companion books to the Chronicles.
@princessivoryrose The White Witch scene in Prince Caspian was in the book. The only part that wasn't in the book was the huge middle chunk where they try to attack the castle at night. Also, I think the beginning at the station was added in to the movie. But they did leave out a bunch in Prince Caspian. Still liked it, though.
its weird that they draw out the fight with maugrim in this one, whereas in the hollywood version its over in seconds, you'd expect it to be the other way round lol
Now that you say it, it does seem silly when an army of grown up fauns, dwarfs, satyrs, and nymphs who have weapons, are panicking and sending a boy with a sword to kill the wolf instead of any of them.
I really enjoyed this series alot as a kid. I saw it on IPTV when I was very young. I only caught a few shows but it really captivated me. Its weird. I enjoy the new movies but the memory of these is stronger. Watching them now they seem silly in a way. 20 years ago as a child this was great.
I don't think anything is better or worse than anything else, just different. But I love the Aslan voice that I grew up with. If anyone can find an old vinyl (and is also out there on cassette) copy of the Caedmon abridged recordings ... the late Sir Ian Richardson narrated LWW doing all the voices remarkably well. His Aslan ... deep, resonant, delivered with perfect cadence and a gravitasse that evoke the emotional power and weight I imagine Aslan to embody.
He's a beautiful lion to look at, but when he talks... it's a bit silly. (His speaking voice if FANTASTIC!) I just wish that they gave him "the big intro" that Disney did. It gave me chills. :-)
Pity alot of the monsters she lists down in this version don't appear the 2005 film......Instead they get replaced by monsters that were not mentioned as existing in the narnian world like cyclopses, minoboars(cheesy name for such an interesting monster), ankleslicers(again a silly name), and harpies that look more like a type of vampire than a species of bird women......Sadly some of the creatures in Aslan's camp do not appear in the 2005 film either like naiads(not dryads. Dryads are tree spirits and they have appeared. Naiads are water spirits), and winged horses. Oddly enough, naiads do appear in the 2010 Dawn Treader film as replacements for the Sea People and they're basically mermaids made out of liquid, which is a huge screw up for both continuity and mythological lore as naiads in the books are described as living in the fresh waters of Narnia while merpeople and sea peopl inhabit the ocean, nor are naiads ever described as having fish tails like mermaids. Although there is this book called "The Crafting of Narnia that has alot of concept art for the first two films and on two pages one has concept art for naiads that look more true to their element of fresh water and are not mermaid like, and on the other is concept artwork for pegasuses and they are all colored a chestnut/brown color that makes me think of it as an homage to Fledge/Strawberry from The Magician's Nephew.
Dude, i got this book called "The Crafting of Narnia" and it's about the first two recent Narnia films by Disney, and it has concept art for pegasi and they all resemble Fledge from The Magician's Nephew! It also had two concepts for naiads/water nymphs, and let me tell you, they are WAY better looking then those liquid mermaids you see in the recent VDT film! The 2005 LWW should have had those pegasi and naiads in the film! T_T lol
I actually like how they did the costume design for those wood/treee men in Aslan's army. I really wish they used that sort of design for the dryads in the films. The wood men in this adaptation look more truer to Lewis' description of dryads in the books than the dryads in the films or even the nymphs in this sereis!
@HeathenMaiden The script is almost identical with the books and the new movies, Better cast for sure in the new one. I wouldnt say better acting, but the old one is more stage acting than movie acting. Overall. I like both equally lol, nothing beats the original, but the new ones are very well done. ps...took forever to find this, looked everywhere, thanks for the upload :)
guns are why war is so prevalent now. It's hard to fight an honorable battle when you can pick people off from behind a stone wall with your little bullets. Fighting with a sword, a knife, your fists, whatever, gives you an appreciation for the horror and fear and utter ick-ness of battle, so you won't want to do it unless its the very last resort.
I must say, one thing I prefer about the more recent adaptation, is Aslan's voice. I think Liam Neeson's voice fits Aslan a bit more... Well, the way I imagine Aslan.
My all time fav version of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe , Maugrim in this version scared the shit out of me as a little kid , I was terrified of him .. I remember i had nightmares about him and used to believe he lived in my closet haahaahaah. The fight scene between Maugrim and peter when they make the whole back ground red was bad ass , the new one kinda fails in showing the epicness of the battle scene between the two.
"We have come, Aslan." This intro was SO much less awkward than in the movie, when Peter's all like, *gulp* "We have come to see Alsan!" I still cringe every time.
@princessivoryrose Well, in Prince Caspian, they just let the werewolf and the hag get further along with their ceremony than Lewis did. What other things are you complaining about specifically?
Things I like about this version: It has nymph characters in both female and male form, cool animated creatures like a pegasus, a cockatrice, a griffin, and a winged panther/cougar, satyrs don't look like furries, and the hags don't look like the result of human and bird cross-breeding experiments.. Things I like about the recent films: Centaurs, fauns and satyrs have actual goat legs, mermaids, and monsters on the Witch's side are more distinguished instead of random looking monsters.
The movie might not be a good adaptation to the book, or as good as this one, but the new one is a great movie, so stop calling it "sh*t" when most people like it, and it even managed to get an Oscar.
Yeah, it got more sensible when the episodes of Prince Caspian, VDT, and SIlver Chair had little actors playing animals like rabbits, moles, badgers, hedgehogs, and owls.
i so badly want to hug Aslan! Even though the new film has such a more lifelike Aslan, i actually prefer this version on him... this is how i always remember Aslan
Actually I think the phoenix is an eagle. I know it looks reddish in some lights, but it also looks brown in others. But yeah, I like the animated flying animals too! ^_^
remember this was originally for an audience on a Sunday afternoon/early evening in 1988.The Beeb would have flipped their lid at the mere whiiff of gratuitous violence
@16nwb at the end of the day true film is not about how fancy the special effects are but more importantly how well the story works and its characters and this version is far better than the modern one simply because it has a more believable cast, and has a certain old film quality you can't do with special effects
Details might make the difference, but the important thing is that it captures the great message that C.S. Lewis always wanted people to get, and that is that God is our one and sole king, king of kings, and slayer of death itself.
The main thing I like about this series is that they made 4 movies instead of 3 (like the newer series did). It would be nice to see a franchise make all 7 books into movies though.
@SoapyIllusion some people like it better then what they see maybe be lacking at epic grapfics and fights but at least follows the content of the book without skiping things
WOW man, just seen this clip. The wolf Maugrim was was played exceptionally well, my hats off to the dude who played him. So many years of nightmares due to that wolf!
Maugrim literally gave me nightmares when I was a kid, literally made me cry - but he's actually the most pathetic villain going haha!
Don't get me wrong, I really like the Disney version too, but I saw this one first
The puppetry of Aslan was so impressive
Liam Neeson was perfect for the voice of Aslan in the film.
I love this! This was my favorite as a kid! And that Asland puppet, it may not be as advanced as effects today, but it was beautiful, & still is quite impressive even now
I want this to be re-released with updated CGI on the monsters and Aslan and things. Apart from that... it is PERFECTION!
The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe has been turned into a a film in 2005.
That wasn’t anywhere near as faithful to the book.
Aww, I love the way Aslan knights Peter. If only you could get that close to a lion like that in real life. :-)
Whoever did the voice and puppetry of Aslan were absolutely brilliant.
brings me memories.i used to see this years ago.
The device of transition to a stage with red lighting for Peter's confrontation with Maugrim in those moments that needed to be removed for theatrical effectiveness is genius.
Really one of my favorite movies and books growing up... thank you very much!!!
Its a shame how many people don't really talk about this version anymore, I love this version and know all the words hehehe anyway they did an AMAZING job casting Richard Dempsey as Peter he was only 14 when he made this and I love him he's so inspiring!!!! :D
Μy favourite serie when I am children.1991 until 1994.
I love the theme music!
music is this series was exceptional! excellent theme!
i could never stop watching this version. i just wished that they could have done the entire series.
I love the Witch's dwarf, he sounds like the Chuckle Brothers.
That wolf serious scared the crap out of me when I was little!!!! WOW! Still creeps me out, but more important, gets the point across!
You don't need million dollar CG effects to scare somebody or prove a point.
"Come to me, EVIL"
You gotta love it
3:44 Okay seriously:P That whole crowd of people is running away from ONE wolf!
Well, these people aren’t really fighters, unless they need to be. Plus, this wolf is THE wolf of the White Witch! It’s not just any wolf.
it was in a companion book, not in the series. When I was little, I had all 7 books and another book... I think called the Narnia Companion or something like that. That book said it. *sigh* I wish I still had it, it had such beautiful pictures.

In the 2005 film Maugrim was more colder, more calice and even more calculating.
The dog kills me everytime 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Maugrim Is Screaming Like A Child. Smack Some Sense Into Him XD
"COME TO MEEEEE........ EEEEEHHHEEEEVIIILLLLL..."
Maugrim is presented as a credible threat in this? I'm surprised that Peter wasn't killed by way of laughing so hard. I expected Maugrim to break into a rousing rendition of "Mr. Mistoffelees"

Hes funnier and cooler in the animated film
Peter was using his Super Smash during the battle with Maugrim
True that! Good remark :),
Man the fight with the wolf in this blows the film adaptation out of the water. They pussed out hardcore with the LWW film version. I mean come on this was in the 80s and didn't show anything particularly gruesome and it's about 50x better.
JADIS IS FREAKIN GORGEOUS!
the manly looking trees are actually living trees as opposed to tree spirits, which are female. That was in one of the companion books to the Chronicles.

That monster that crept along the ground (the one shown after the critter crawling at Edmund's feet) creeps me out, still.
@felizjulianidad I wasn't born when this was made and I appriciate it very much mainly b.c it's SO simple and loving :) Thank you :) (Applauds)
I really enjoyed this series alot as a kid. I saw it on IPTV when I was very young. I only caught a few shows but it really captivated me. Its weird. I enjoy the new movies but the memory of these is stronger. Watching them now they seem silly in a way. 20 years ago as a child this was great.

The scene where the witch calls to her minions would've made the '05 film far more entertaining, I would've liked to se Tilda Swinton's take on it
Pity alot of the monsters she lists down in this version don't appear the 2005 film......Instead they get replaced by monsters that were not mentioned as existing in the narnian world like cyclopses, minoboars(cheesy name for such an interesting monster), ankleslicers(again a silly name), and harpies that look more like a type of vampire than a species of bird women......Sadly some of the creatures in Aslan's camp do not appear in the 2005 film either like naiads(not dryads. Tilda Swinton was perfect as the White Witch because she had given an ice-cold venom in her performance.
That speech is my fave thing out of all the books for some reason it popped into my head tonight.
Would of been awesome to see Tilda do it
The best part is when the Griffin takes Edmund.
Holy crap! I thought I was the only one who had seen the 10th Kingdom. God I love that movie. This version of LWW kinda creeps me out.
Dude, i got this book called "The Crafting of Narnia" and it's about the first two recent Narnia films by Disney, and it has concept art for pegasi and they all resemble Fledge from The Magician's Nephew! That glint of the long dagger on 9 : 28 is a scary scene.
I actually like how they did the costume design for those wood/treee men in Aslan's army. I really wish they used that sort of design for the dryads in the films. This is my childhood~
Mine too
The White Witch left out Ogres and Minotaurs in her summoning.
@HeathenMaiden The script is almost identical with the books and the new movies, Better cast for sure in the new one. lol it was the Lions roar that scared me as a kid!
guns are why war is so prevalent now.
No matter the effects. I still like this version the best. It is perfect for its time and its target audience!!
3:32 it’s like the horn honking
It's interesting that they mix traditional handdrawn animation with live action and costumes.
I do love this movie
Aslan is so awesome in these originals.
Awsome, He is an King Emperor of the sea, AOL;;;; and also Ask me a Narnia Question.
I prefer Aslan's mouth only opening when he speaks. The lip-syncing in the 05 version is kinda odd.
I must say, one thing I prefer about the more recent adaptation, is Aslan's voice. I think Liam Neeson's voice fits Aslan a bit more... Well, the way I imagine Aslan.
7:02 "YOU!!" Poor dog he has'nt got a clue why he is gettin his ass kicked.
As much as I admire and enjoy C.S. Lewis's masterpiece, the moment Aslan opened his mouth in THIS I couldn't stop laughing...
It’s cheap but I can easily see being a kid and finding it majestic as hell
This is utter balls.
Yes, but if you're a loyal reader of the the books. The talking animals are larger than the regular ones. But I must say, good point.
My all time fav version of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe , Maugrim in this version scared the shit out of me as a little kid , I was terrified of him .. 7:05, the wolf looks like a German Shepherd dog
Things I like about this version: It has nymph characters in both female and male form, cool animated creatures like a pegasus, a cockatrice, a griffin, and a winged panther/cougar, satyrs don't look like furries, and the hags don't look like the result of human and bird cross-breeding experiments..

“We will FFIGHTTTTT!”
She so deranged lol
SYYYYYLENCE !
You'll might like the 2008 Prince Caspian film as well. In that one, Glenstorm and his family are all black too!
The movie might not be a good adaptation to the book, or as good as this one, but the new one is a great movie, so stop calling it "sh*t" when most people like it, and it even managed to get an Oscar.
No, but there are going to be movies of The Hobbit, which is the prequel to LOTR. ;D
Waaaay better than the movie
Yeah, it got more sensible when the episodes of Prince Caspian, VDT, and SIlver Chair had little actors playing animals like rabbits, moles, badgers, hedgehogs, and owls.
wow...just an amazing, knockdown brawl eh?? "ARGGGH!"
Your welcome, and thanks! :)
So far, after watching both films, I think both are good and bad in different ways, SO STOP TRYING TO COMPARE! Thank you :P
i so badly want to hug Aslan! Even though the new film has such a more lifelike Aslan, i actually prefer this version on him... this is how i always remember Aslan
9:31. LMFAO.
4:10 probably the most epic battle between childhood innocence and furry deviance I've ever seen
Hahaha, you could see the wolfs rubber snout wobbling . . . The wolves in the new film were much better :)
wow aslan's growls are brilliant! the aslan in this version is definately better than the one from the disney version.
The battle with Maugrim lasted longer than in the film, where he just leapt right onto Peter’s sword and that was it…
All hail Aslan from the 80s
Actually I think the phoenix is an eagle. I know it looks reddish in some lights, but it also looks brown in others. But yeah, I like the animated flying animals too! ^_^
remember this was originally for an audience on a Sunday afternoon/early evening in 1988.The Beeb would have flipped their lid at the mere whiiff of gratuitous violence
Actually they are satyrs. In the credits, they are identified as "Aslan's satyrs". But yeah, they're cool. ;)
@TheeBeautifulChrist Agreed... I dont get why everyones against the new version... I think it's amazing!
The dwarf was so cute, much younger than the New one
i guess they couldn't afford to have Jim Henson to do beaver puppets
Oh My God Is Brittany Hancastal Plays Susan In Narnia
@16nwb at the end of the day true film is not about how fancy the special effects are but more importantly how well the story works and its characters and this version is far better than the modern one simply because it has a more believable cast, and has a certain old film quality you can't do with special effects

It would be nice to see a franchise make all 7 books into movies though.
when peter hurts the wolf his sword is with blood, in the disney version they hurt everyone and the sword is new and clean
@ellezfire22 Actually over all the old cast is good, its just Lucy that brings down this one lol.
a former landlady of mine knew Miss Kellerman and said she made a superb Oberon in A midsummer night's dream..
@SoapyIllusion
some people like it better then what they see maybe be lacking at epic grapfics and fights but at least follows the content of the book without skiping things
