Yes you're right on the inserter logic! They are "smart" enough to not fill up your machines until they "overflow" and only insert enough to operate and have the resources inserted for the next process. That makes it easier to send large feeds of a single resource to multiple machines.
This game makes me think of a 3D Factorio more than Satisfactory. The mechanics seem very similar to Factorio, with the inserters and the build queue. It's mechanics may also include the one where inserters avoid over-stuffing the inventories of connected machines, so when you placed all that extra copper inside the machine, the inserters stopped inserting because the inventory was above the fill level.
Inserters work efficiently. They will only put a few pieces in at a time rather than filling the inventory. This allows you to run a longer line on more of a round robin methodology.
You kept saying you didn't see a difference between this and satisfactory do you not realize that your underground in a cave that's where you have to build is in a cave not the only difference just the biggest one
