  • In this unboxing video we take a look at two new Prussian Cavalry Black Powder box sets from Warlord Games.
Each set contains 12 horses and 12 cavalrymen all manufactured using Warlord Resin. How does this new wonder material stand up to close scrutiny ...?

Just received two packs of Uhlans and two packs of Hussars and on a swift look I wish I had watched this video first. I do have some of the resin Judge Dredd range from Warlord which does work well. I am disappointed with these two packs and will be avoiding the two newest on pre order until I see an unboxing that shows they manage to avoid the biggest challenge of using resin for fine parts or I can find metal replacement weapons
    .
Uhlan box. Challenges beyond the fact they are resin and need a lot of careful washing and cleaning. The pose of the four rearing horses is hidden on the reverse picture on the box but they certainly look un natural. In the main the 'flexi' nature of resin when painted is not an issue as there are only a few items that may give headaches. I have no idea why Warlord did not supply metal lances as they would have improved the kit. The other challenge will be the minimal bases on the horses which are distorted and will create a challenge on basing.
The Hussars have exactly the same horses pack so the challenges are still there and I will guess the two packs on pre order will also share this horse pack.
The Hussars themselves have good detail except for two problems. One figure I had with a raised sabre above his head was flashed in the gap between raised arm and head. Steady hand and very sharp knife time. But the biggest problem of all are the swords by a large margin. Flimsy, bendy, distorted and ranging from straight blades to bananas! Resin does not do well on fine scaled weapons.
On both boxes there is a small table giving information on detail difference between each regiment of horse. The Hussars box art has them in light brown coats which I assume is the 1st Silesian 4th regiment. Some research will be required to represent your hoped for regiment to a degree where the rivet counters don't howl. How could this be improved? The horses need to be reviewed regarding the rearing pose. All horses will need careful basing or even if brave enough rebasing entirely. In both cases the actual figure castings are good and reasonably detailed. However the whole thing is let down by the weapons which at this scale are too challenging for the material and any actual handling will result in flaking paint. The subject of Prussian Cavalry is not covered well by the industry so this or metal are the only two games in town for now. So wait and see if Perry's come through or be prepared to work hard for your regiments. 8 out of 10 Warlord games.

Last time I bought 'bendy' plastic, was around 1970! After seeing this, I'll stick with Perry Miniatures, as I love the variety of poses, headgear etc, that they generally have.

  • @hellonearth-thehistoryofwa1270

£24 for 12 polyurethane guys? Fuck that. That's metal prices!

Yes at the start of the video I thought they said they were cheaper but for that price I'm not buying.

More flash than on the metal figures for the same price. And the flash on metal is easier to clean. I wonder how long the paint will stay on the lances and swords!

Very valuable review. I was excited by "plastic" prussian cavalry, but disapointed to hear they wre resin. Bendy plastic doesn't keep paint on well if I remember, so I will be giving these a miss. Especially as there are only 12 figures. If you want a 24 figure unit without two trumpeters you need three boxes!

I agree that some of those horses are really strange looking and the amount of flash means a lot of cleaning up will be required and I doubt that just a knife will not make a really good job .I do not think I will be a great fan of this new soft plastic/resin material

They look pretty nice, but not sure I’m liking the bendy resin. I haven’t tried one from warlord yet, but my experience with softer plastic is it’s a pain to clean mold lines. Not sure if these would be the same thing

Bendy plastic! Might as well go back to 20mm esci figures... not for me.

I wanted to like the figures but have doubts. Seems a step back to the good old bad old days of (soft) Airfix 1/72. and the attendant problems of paint cracking/flaking off. Or am l missing something?

Mate i would take flexible one piece over fiddly heads thats never look right, Pelisses that have the dimensions of a Bed Doona that are no way in scale. Arm positions that are not anatomically correct.
      Perrys are no better.
PS Airfix wont flake if you presoak in detergent and undercoat!
Now ive bought a few Front Ranks; i dont think i will ever buy a Resin Set ever again

No no no, utter rubbish backward step. Look at GW, massive company didn’t go down this route for a very good reason.

The 4:45 Horse looks like the Marshall Ney metal one . I thought that looked liked a Carousel horse so chucked it for another

What paints are going to stick to the ResiPlast miniatures?

  • @gorlestondoug

I would rather pay £3 per figure for top notch Perry metal figures than £2 for these rather bland dodgy resins and if and when Perry do Prussian cavalry in plastic these warlord sets will be obsolete.
Warlord really need to get a sculptor who can do horses, all their cavalry sets are very dissapointing imo.

For whoever owns these, are they closer to heroic scale (like older napoleonics and bolt action) or are they more true scale (like perrys)?

Thanks for the review...I was going to purchase a fair few of these, to support my every growing Prussian force, but I'm not really impressed with the horses at all, and not over keen on the actual figures either! Over all, awesome review, poor looking figures...will save my money.

What glue will secure the man to the horse?

    • @SeaDog337
      @SeaDog337 Před 3 lety +2

Any resin based material will require CA glue (superglue) since normal hobby glue will not cause a weld. Much like with metal miniatures, I would recommend scoring both surfaces before gluing them together to ensure a stronger bond.

    • @tylerputo

cyanocrilate (loctite, super glue, gorilla glue, any of those)
