I'm a female and someone older, born and raised in the New York City borough of (southeast) Queens. My entire family originated from Brooklyn. It started with my maternal grandfather who came from the West Indies island of Barbados to Brooklyn and married my maternal grandmother, a born and raised Brooklyn gal. They had my Mom (who was raised in Crown Heights and just passed away from Covid-19 in Flatbush on 5/5/20). My family has spread out all across BK neighborhoods from East New York, Brownsville, Fort Greene and Bedford-Stuyvesant, to name but a few. When Pop starts rocking with that sly cute smile like he was feeling himself 😏 and his music, while looking over at a girl or someone like "I told you so", or you feel that (rhythm) too, and then he does his hand like he's turning the steering wheel on his whip, reminds me of so many thorough New York City dudes. They always imagine summertime, windows down, cruising thru with a banger or something smooth like this song playing in their car. Pop was all things "NYC Black 'Urban' Male" ...a tough, but heartfelt and loving type of masculinity that's mixed with the ambitious daily grind of 'the come up'. Rest in power young prince, rest in power. You, and your infectious energy, will be missed.

Pop reminded me of my nephews, some of the older NYC guys I've dated, lol, along with the many young Black males I've worked with academically to empower in youth development programs.
