That cooking scene was hilarious! 😁 Our reactions to the whole season 2 and episodes 1, 2 of season 3 are now available over on our Pateron: www.patreon.com/ScribblesReactions
I'm glad you watched this OVA ❤. It's fun and lighthearted and it shows our Jean-boy had a normal childhood. We have to remember that he was 12 years old when he joined the cadets, so he was most likely at an age that made him "rebellious". He didn't want to be treated like a child and his mother was lovely but definitely too overprotective. I suppose he felt embarrassed when she treated him like a helpless boy, mostly if she did that in public, so it makes sense he wanted to go as far away as possible. The only way to leave home at his age was by joining the cadets, but he never wanted to risk his life either, so his goal was clear: make the top 10 to go to the Military Police. Someone as proud as Jean would feel "less than" if he went to the Garrison. If his only two options were the Garrison and the Survey Corps and he picked the Garrison, everybody would know he was afraid. Most people choose the Garrison because they aren't top 10, they don't want to fight, but they want the benefits of being in a military branch. However, I don't think Jean wanted to be like "most people". He wanted to prove himself strong and capable, so the only risk-free option was the MP. That was his entire motivation as someone who had never experienced death or hardships. That's why the battle for Trost and Marco's death had such an impact. (You can tell Jean is one of my favorite characters. Top 5 for sure).
Jean is very relatable as a teenager who was a crybaby and now wants to be perceived a man by his peers...he has a lot of pride but a good heart, very relatable goals and desires at that age... his character development is very well done through the show and I love the Jean-Sasha-Conny trio they're so silly it's hilarious

We can see how soft Eren is to Jean's mom by helping picking the fruit. Because the guilt for not caring his mom in the past.
