    Hi, Guys I know it's been a while since my last video but I've been putting all my effort into getting this van converted. In this video, I will talk about why I'm building the camper and what I will be doing once it's built.
    Also how I managed to get the money together to buy it in the first place and then convert it. Especially as breeding pure breed hens is no longer viable while bird flu is in the UK. So check out the video and see what will be coming on the channel...?

    You really are onto something Craig. The thought of living the so called "normal life", puts me in a panic. I think living the simpler life has definitely saved me. Just the freedom you get living off grid is a massive boost for my mental and physical wellbeing. I'd LOVE to own a piece of land or woodland, but the price has shot up so much! Compared to what you can buy in say Sweden, the UK is so biased towards anyone not a rich privileged, bags of money, person. No wonder people are looking outside of the UK! Your knowledge and enthusiasm is just what people, looking for a way to live an alternative lifestyle, need. I can't wait to see what you discover as you tour the UK. 😄

      It puts me in a panic to so you are not alone and there are plenty of people who are sick of all this shite, having to work for the rich for no rewards, especially in this day and age. Buying land and living on the land has helped me with my well-being too. The price has shot up because of the rich buying up the only finite object on the planet they know it is a good investment so they are buying thousands of acres just look how much Dyson has purchased over the last ten years and bill gates hundreds of thousands of acres why are they buying it...? What do they know that we don't is out fiat currency going to die off like every other fiat currency has. Banks printing money backed up by nothing but their word. So land is really the only safe investment if you had nothing but land you could survive off that land. You can find people willing to sell land cheap but you have to get out there and meet them and normally the smaller the plot the higher the price, plus location etc amenities and so on.
      Hopefully, you get to buy some land and live life on your own terms it will give you so much back and once it's in your name well it's done, but this is where most people struggle to find the land to buy. I want to take people around their local area and meet local farmers and people will be shocked just how open-minded they are. But if you are looking online then its going to cost because you are up against everyone else who has seen it. They all try to outbid each other to drive up the price. Plus land banking which is a shocking rate of the planning system when they have granted planning for 3 million homes but developers wont build them because that will drive prices down and in turn their profits. Maybe we will meet one day and get started on finding that dream piece of land you are looking for to fulfil your life. Thanks for watching and commenting Craig

      thanks for the reply. I was going to film all the build but that takes to long when filming, but will do van tour when she is finished not long now. I have taken parts from other van builds on CZcams and added my on needs as I will be using the van forever probs.
      Planning to do a Europe tour in the van and just do what I want. I'm lucky in the sense I don't have any debt my kids are all grown up, and one is a Pro Soccer player and has been on the show Welcome To Wrexham many times lol. So yeah I'll be documenting my travels and the mischief I get up to. I would rather do it now while I can as 50 this year and want to be able to enjoy myself on my travels.
      You should do it across America would be great, I mean you're already used to the camera so that's no biggy and show us some of the crazy parts of the US. I remember travelling the Westcoast in a Ford Mustang Convertable sometimes we would pull off the highway and into little towns with tumbleweeds blowing across the road and a squeaky sign hanging from chains and nobody around. I was like this looks like the film's wrong turn we need to get our arses out of here before someone takes a fancy to them.
      I don't know if they would let me back into the US as I would love to go back. It was easy first time it was like a month before 9/11 so booked a flight and just travelled from New York to California but so much to see and not enough time. Like say don't know if would be allowed back in now though..?

Yours will pass to and I will certainly be popping in to see how you are getting on and if you need a hand to build anything or any other help I can give I will be more than happy to do so.
      My van will be kitted out with all the computer gear and wifi etc as yeah do. Si we can have coffee in my case lol and a good old natter about how this shity system fails in so many areas. No problem you are only up the road be my first stop and would love to see what you have been up to and take a tour. That's what I did sold what I could and the rest went to the tip and I got rid of a lot of crap I never needed or ever used. When you are living on your land everything you do to it and invest will pay you back tenfold. So be great to pop in have a chat about your plans. Don't go to overboard buying a fancy caravan you can get some good deals. Do what I did put adds up saying Static Caravan wanted cash waiting not paying eBay or Gumtree prices otherwise `I would have one by now. But if you want a quick sale and you want cash give me a call or message.
      Then I got a message from a guy saying he had one I would have meet him in a pub car park on a Sunday lol thought this a bit dodgy but hey what's to loose. I was shocked just how good of condition it was in and would have give him min 6k for it but all Im paid for was moving fees. I will tell you the crazy story of collecting it and why I got it for nothing. He even said I bet you thought it was going to be a piece of shit lol but yeah that's how I got mine. Look for people wanting quick sales and put yourself in the driving seat which gives you more power to get a good deal and a nice caravan. Well, I will be definitely popping in for a visit and we will take a look at these planning issues. I want to see how different council planning departments work and which is the worst for people trying to live alternative lives on their own land. Maybe `I will have a chart on my blog of which is the worst and which is best. Give them Shity Council of the Year award lol.
      But our council is great on many different fronts. We are classed as a low-income area, but the town really does go all out and I've never known a council to cut grass so much, you never see rubbish in the roads etc. I know this has nothing to do with planning but I drove out from Wembley and thought would be seeing nice areas.
      My god what I shithole my friend told me what they charge rent etc. It was the worst estate etc I have ever seen in my life and I've lived on estates with riots. Would never live there so depressing and shit all over the place. It was the total opposite to where I just came from. For such a wealthy place my god they need to spend a little on sorting those areas out there is embarrassment. Like our council is redoing all the homes again with new kitchens, roofs, and electrics they spend their funds well. Glad not as much goes into the planning department but you can still get hold of them.
      Anyway, Cheshire sounds just my cup of tea on the home stretch with this van now so should be sunny when I visit. Thanks for commenting and reading my rant message lol Craig

I know a guy lives on probs about the same amount of land and grooms dogs etc. You have to get ready to start your biz and then move on the land if you ask first then you have no chance. I made video about the guy who does dog grooming and showed his plot from Google maps

    • @thesmallfarmerlife
      @thesmallfarmerlife  Před 3 měsíci

      6 and half acres you should have no problem building a woodsman cabin in there through permitted development as in England you can with permitted development and there's no rule on how many acres you need and if it mature trees then you could manage the woodland. I am sure there are a few trees that need to be felled that you could use to make products and I recently read an article about what constitutes forestry and where the line stops when it come to that sort of business.
      Does it stop at just felling trees no, it could be that you are using that timber to make products that can make a profit and it really would be there where it stops and there are plenty of things you can do in woodland, that's if you never purchased from Woodland trust that go around buying woodlands just so they can put covenants on it and then sell it on for more money.
      So Im sure we could come up with a plan and be nice to visit a woodland of that size, I know its not huge but you could still do something in there. Looking forward to meeting up and talking about it. Thanks for watching and commenting Craig

    I have been trying to buy some land for 5 years now and the main issue is price. Last plot I looked at was a 1 Acre woodland which wasn't suitble for several reasons, no access from the main road, backed on to a housing estate so plenty of trespassing going on and they wanted £7,000 for it, I just laughed and said good luck, I offered £3,000 for it. Checking, this is 3 years on now, its still up for sale but the price is now £5,000.

    • @thesmallfarmerlife
      @thesmallfarmerlife  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yeah stay away from places like that but you need to get out and ask people honestly it is the only way to go if you are looking for cheaper land and trust me farmers have lots of small plots they do not farm. Maybe a little boggy or lots of humps in the ground or just in a weird place. Thats what you should be looking for getting down those farm tracks down those farm that's how most of the country is accessed anyway not off A & B roads that you can see and land is sold buy word of mouth not online and if it is on line it will come with covenants and restrictions and so on.
      Plus you are up against all the horsey people who have the cash to buy land for their pet horses. I mean horses are expensive to keep and rent livery so if they can find land they will try out bid each other that's what you're dealing with buying online. So we need to get you in with local farmers that's how I got my land and all the people I know and always without covenants or clawback and at a decent price. They want people to get into farming and taking care of the land.
      The average age of a farmer in the UK is 55 - 65 and younger people are not getting into farming so they want people to start and they know you have to start somewhere. Start with couple of acres you work the land make money save money and buy more land around you because now you are in with the locals so you will know if someone is thinking of selling a bit for whatever reason..? Now I don't know how much you have to spend but try to get as much together as possible or structure a deal in a way that benefits you and the farmer. Hope you get there and thanks for commenting Cheers Craig

Then going to do a walkthrough video and link to all the things I used. I think people will be shocked at the quality that I managed at the price I managed including the van itself. That will be a good video then ill be back to making videos for the channel, lots of them as I even have my own little office area to edit the videos I make on the road.
      I'm thinking of a channel name to compliment this channel as I would like the subscribers from this channel to follow along as I have lots of adventures etc. I will put all the videos of me meeting people living alternative lifestyles and the difficulties with planners which is going to get much easier in the coming months for us guys. I can convert without planning into a home anyone can along as it was built before 24 of July 2023 and was granted full planning, also used for agriculture and my stable block ticks all those boxes and I changed the use to agriculture in 2019 so happy day.
      Mate if you have a campervan I would be out and about down those country roads asking as many people as you can even if you ask a hundred or two hundred you only need one yes. Theres no point looking online that's not how land is sold well most of it anyway and if you do find some you will way over pay and get caught in the clawback trap. Good luck in your search and will deffo give you a shout when Im up the lakes that will be one of my first destinations.

    • @thesmallfarmerlife
      @thesmallfarmerlife  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I will if theres an invite as I want to get out there and speak to people I want to hear what they have to say about our planning system, how the rich are buying all the land and banking it. It's shocking in the UK people think its a concrete jungle but there's only about 6% built on and that includes all the parks and things as well local parks not national but you get my meaning.
      As for finding land and books on how to find land to buy. You literally have to talk to farmers and landowners. there is no book on buying land as it is sold in a totally different way to homes. Never buy land that's on the internet get out there and meet as many farmers as you can. They all talk to each other at farmer's auctions and great yorshire etc. So your number and name will be passed on if a farmer needs to sell a few acres. I do not know one person personally that has purchased land in any other way honestly. But would love to meet up and have a chat and maybe we can have a drive around your local area and speak to some local farmers and get the just of the area and who might be open to selling off some land.
      That's the way to get land at a decent price. So yeah I look forward to meeting you and hopefully, we find you some land or at least get your name out into the farming community. Yeah see people think farmers will just say piss off but they know you have to start somewhere and its not like you can start or even manage a 100 acre farmer as a newbie. I will certainly pass through preston to meet up. Thanks for watching and comment Craig

      @@thesmallfarmerlife My current plan has been/is:
      I’ve been learning as much as I can from people like your good self for over a month & will continue to do so for another month. This is why I was asking if you had any Audiobook suggestions since you mentioned you listen to them on your latest vid. Also after you mentioned 'The Land Is Ours', I am now reading Chapter 7, the DIY Planning Handbook.
      The next step that I have already planned in a month or so, after taking your advice on several of your vids is to start knocking on the doors (not the internet) of farms & isolated houses amongst land to see if anyone is selling land or knows anyone that maybe. Hopefully I find some land to buy & for how much; I will then decide what my next steps are about possibly incorporating some form of farming & how that would work with my current business.
      This is why I would love to meet up with you over food & drinks as I generally believe & that hopefully you agree that I bring a different perspective to the table, a unique take on things. • @thesmallfarmerlife
      @thesmallfarmerlife  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I don't know what you mean about mini retreat..? If you mean a tourism business yes you could but you would need a business plan etc and also there is lots of other things that cost money lots of money when trying to get planning for that sort of thing, it's not just the cost of what business you want to do. Also, farming is not what people think it is nowadays..? If you look at Clarkson farm he made nearly No money from all the BS Big agri type farming business etc but he did make money growing mushrooms etc and what you could call small holder type. But I know people who groom dogs and live on the land it is more a case of getting a business started and then moving on the land when the business is started then you ask for forgiveness rather than permission so to speak. That is how 99% of people get the right to live on the land not through asking but through doing...! Thanks, Craig

  • @CheekyChap

    Hi Craig, Hope your doing well, I just wanted to pick your brains on a situation, I've recently had a visit from the council eforcement officer after nosey neighbors complained about me leveling my field entrance and digging a shallow footing to have gravel on (to eventually have a static on) this is on agricultural land with no dwelling, I was told i would need planning permission to use gravel as its classified as "Hard standing" ive since had this told to me via email. I asked for a copy of the local council's rules on agricultural land stating gravel is hard standing because its my understanding if water can pass through it can't be classified as Hard standing.
    Is he correct?

    • @thesmallfarmerlife
      @thesmallfarmerlife  Před 2 měsíci +1

      It's a wierd one as some councils lets say if you put in planning for a stable block or something then you need a hardstanding to place it on but you don't have to apply for planning for the hardstanding just the stable block or barn. If you have put a farm track gravel or not then they will ask for planning. I mean some councils really don't give a shit to be honest and yours probably wouldn't if the neighbours hadn't said anything. i mean you could build a home and they wouldn't care its only because jealous people complain.
      If I was going to apply for planning for the hardstanding I would apply for a building instead, maybe a small barn and always ask for bigger than you want and settle for less and let the planners think. they have won. Just think o some small business like breeding purebred chickens to sell fertile hatching eggs. If they ask why you need the barn say because of bird flu that appears every year in the u and sometimes stays for months and the birds need to be housed in doors.
      Like it has just been around for 18 month maybe more which crippled the egg industry and shut down all the poultry auctions. Plus there is good money to be made in selling the hatching eggs and it will be the same cost for the planning application as it would for a hard standing. Now this is key you only have to start the construction. which in your case would be the hard standing, but you will have planning for a small barn forever as you have started the construction.
      I know it is stupid but if people complain etc. then you want to get the planners on your side as they will just come back and cause you more stress. So what you want to do is piss off the person that called them and say well thanks for the phone call now I am going to build a barn. They can object all they want a thousand people can but if you have a business that's agricultural they have to pass it and support it.
      Plus again it gives you peace of mind and you will only bee adding value to your land like a lot more e value and you can pick up a used refurbished barn for a couple of grand. But that's after you have your hardstanding down. You can even use the images from my website for pure breed hens and set up simple website to prove you are doing this. Also once you have a business set up or they think you are going to set one up then you can apply for a proper address and they will say we don't give addresses to barns or stables etc or unless you pay council tax or business rates to which you say farms don't pay business rates.
      Then once you have your simple Shopify website like mine setup costs peanuts £9 a month, you move a static on and say it is for health and safety in the workplace etc and if you do not have this which is somewhere to get cleaned up, store medications for animals, coom a meal, store first aid and treat etc. Then you will not get the neighbours complaining well they will but nothing will happen and you will get to keep the static as a wealthfare unit. If you live in it then who's to know and you also have a registered address with the post office and the council are the only ones that can do that. I do not normally walk people through all the step etc. But this is your best bet if you want to live on the land.
      Hope this helps and sorry for your neighbours if you need more help then consider joining my Patreon Page for Guidance and will do my best to help. Thanks, Craig

      Yeah of course it would now Im not saying prime real estate right next to shops and local town etc but not far out but you need as I tell everyone to get out and do some knocking on farmers doors. They will not tell you to piss off and if they do they are grumpy twats. But that's how to find a piece of land on the cheap not online or land agents. But while your looking keep squealing away those pennies for you land and if you find a bit of land that someone is willing to sell and you don't have enough money you could swap labour for the extra and in the process of working for the farm you will gain lots of new skills and lots of new friends and that's how you get in with local farmers. I get on great with every farmer around me and there is some massive farms. I was just having a natter to the guy who owns the big farm that used to own this land and he owns this one and one in France where he lives but his mother and family live in this farmhouse here which is stunning. These farmers also love their home garden its amazing.
      You see farmers are not like these rich people in second homes they know the struggles of starting a farm and making a profit but they are doing it on huge scale with many tractors and different machinery. You don't need to do that there many people making 250k a year from small half acre and couple acre plots. You just have to grow the right produce and you don't need the massive cash outlay.
      So don't give up and if I can get down to meet you I will take you around the local farmers and we can get to meet them trust me they are open minded and know you need to start small. Every one that's doing farming on CZcams and making good money say they wished they started smaller because you can carew so much more for small plots than larger plots without the need for expensive tools etc. So yes if you find the right person and land you could do it for that. But you will still have to find more money for buildings and fencing etc. Good luck and hope to meet up one day Thanks Craig

      Thanks mate yeah pain in the arse with this new camera and watching CZcams videos reviewing the product they just dam liers as they get the product free. I no it will be great for filming inside and outside the cam which Is the main reason I bought it but the internal mic is not how reviewers say it is. But on plus side will have an action camera on me when driving up the Alps one on the side of the van and a drone locked onto me from high up so cant wait for those road trip videos I used to ride MotoCross so I'm really came and confident so I can image me getting up to some pretty crazy shit.
      Plus Im also going to drive into small villages and maybe find a small restaurant and ask if I can work for free for a parking spot and a meal, even if that means washing pots lol I want to do it like Im a younger me, I have seen backpackers doing it when I was travelling in my twenties I was in fancy hotels back then but did stay in some areas where the backpackers stayed. So I saw what their travels were like and Im still fit enough to do those things so that's what Im going to do. I cannot work the farm while all the pure breed chicken auctions are closed with no end in site.
      I might as well get out there and enjoy myself and if possible entertain and also teach when I can. So its going to be a great adventure. Need a channel name for the off channel sort of videos something around adventure etc. I mean how many people get to live life debt-free and basically doing what they want within the law of course maybe break few little ones but nothing major lol. Cannot wait one more time lol Thanks for commenting hope to meet soon Thanks Craig
