I think I need to address some things said in this video. I don't have some hidden agenda. I don't have a bias against the French team, and I'm not trying to stir up trouble, so let's just get that out of the way first.
1. The MEN'S French team is not as good as they should be. Here are some statistics: France hasn't had a male world champion at -60, -66, -73 in over 20 years. 10 years ago at -81, Loic Pietri was WC. At -90 and -100 it's the same story as -60, -66, and -73. The one outlier is Teddy. So in 20 years, France has had 2 world champions. For a bit of perspective, these countries have had more that two champions in the same period: KOR, NED, UZB, JPN, MGL, RUS, BRA, GEO. Tied for 2 champions with France are ESP, GER, KAZ.
2. the +78 French women aren't that good. Yeah this was probably a bad comment by me and shows how little I pay attention to this category. I went through and had a look at DICKO and TOLOFUA's last 10 or so contests and they're definitely throwing people. Sorry about that.
One last thing. Just because France does well in the teams doesn't mean that my points in 1 are wrong. For example, Gaba threw Hashimoto. Great throw. But Gaba has never medalled at a Grand Slam. The team event is PERFECT for the French team because 3/6 members have to be female and France has the strongest female team in the world. This is why GEO is trying to hard to build some strong females to help them through it. Also, -60, -66, -48 and -52 competitors basically cannot compete in the teams event. Food for thought.
Also, keep it peaceful here. I did this exact same video last year. Too much racism and hate in the comments. Just keep it to yourself and keep things positive please.
@@bartofilms no no. This wasn’t addressed at you. Find the comments that say “these aren’t French people”
Your understanding of men's Judo is correct.
However, your understanding of women's Judo is wrong.
The French women's team is clearly not the strongest in the world.
Just looking at the results of the individual competitions at this year's world chapionships, isn't that obvious?
There are only two weight classes in which France clearly outperforms Japan: 63 and 78.
Niizoe has a hard time with France's #2, Pinot, but has a dominant record against France's #1, Gahié.
Agbegnenou's outstanding performance gives the impression that the entire French women's team is just overwhelming the others.
@@vsmaster1831 are you making my argument even stronger?!
Bonsoir!
Literally the first judo match I've ever watched so i had no idea what was happening 99% of the time but your commentary was very easy to listen to. Good job man
Rule drama aside, big fan of the intensity the French team brought to the fight. Great judo on display, especially by the women
Very glad you came into my YT feed!! It was great to see some judo again as I started the sport in my uni days in the 70s but lost touch with it as I went into the working world. Will need to brush up on the rules and throws but this vlog has rekindled my itch for the awesome sport! New subscriber here and thanks for uploading!!
52:05 The reason she was penalized was that it was determined that she didn't make an actual attempt at tomoe nage, but just faked it to do jujigatame. That is what is deemed an illegal move.
Wow just unbelievable, it was very close..
I can't understand the decisions made by the referees, especially the last. I would understand when she tried to armbar while not on the floor. Also, the ko uchi maki komi was taught to me the same way and my trainer still does this the same way today.
Btw saito makes a very kind and respectful impression on me, also he did well, and I'm excited to see him more often in the future.
Thank you for the commentary (also for the whole matches and not just snippets), a lot better than the dry official ones :D
I completely understand that attempted kouchi maki komi was penalized, because she literally put the whole body against her leg. That could have ended badly, it is dangerous for the knee, I wouldn't say it is really a good idea banning leg grabs all together, but banning leg grabs in the way that you throw your whole body weight at opponent's knee is not OK. You can seriously injure them, knee wounds are no joke. I don't mean to disrespect, but I disagree and think that kind of technique is OK to be penalized in sport. Keep your knees healthy!
I’m a Jiu Jitsu player. I randomly ran into your video and got stuck watching until the end… France got robbed. Thanks for the content.
❤️❤️❤️🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
cry more French Judo is not Judo
I don't agree. Rules as written, you're not allowed to directly apply an armlock on a standing opponent. Trying to hide it with the world's fakest tomoenage entry is just trying to game the rules, and the ref saw through it. For what it's worth, I think it's a bad rule, but refs have to call it by the book, and he got it right on this one.
Same thing with the leg grab. There are cases where people will block the leg with their elbow, and it can be legal if tori has his hand on the collar (for example, Rafaela Da Silva's controversial gold medal at Rio 2016). But the rule has never been "it's fine as long as you don't grip the pants with your hands." If that was the case, we'd be seeing a lot of high crotches in judo.
The ref got it right every step of the way. The French player threw the match away with unforced fouls. And just for the uninitiated, it's worth remembering that the French, not the Japanese, run the IJF.
I like having your commentary as someone trying to get into judo it makes it easier for me
Thank you so much for uploading this!! I wasn't able to livestream it and this made my day! 🎉
These team competitions are awesome.
With the lowest weight class being -73kg, Japan's dominance is reduced as they are less of a force in the heavier weight classes, which means we get some close fought matchs even when on paper Japan are by the far the strongest nation.
And I imagine for the olympics Teddy will fight in the over 90 for the french team rather than some random -100kg dude. So even more of a battle for Japan.
Except that the overall quality of the judo by excluding the majority of U60, U66, U48, and U52kg fighters where the real quality dynamic judo resides.
I would go U52, U63 and U78, plus U66, U81, and U100kg. 🇬🇧
I was fortunate to train at the Kodokan/Japan in 1961 - have followed Judo ever since.
Damn that first ippon and breaking fall with his forehead and neck was unsettling to watch live and even worse in slow mo. Thank God he’s okay.
I'm 2 lessons into judo and love it so far! But being a casual fan doesn't seem to be too easy as far as content goes. This format editing and commentary was spot on 👍👍
Great match! I really learned a lot about the rules and to what extent they are applied. Good to see that there are refs looking at video footage too.
Thank you for sharing the final between these two teams and having your thoughts also. Well done ! Cheers ...
Yes for the Georgian's fights. By the way, your French pronunciation is correct!
Those " Tomoa Nagi" attempts by Pinot, were flying arm bars in disguise!
That explains why she attempted them with her feet 3 feet away.
France, Africa
Согласен с тобой полностью. Мы поняли о чём речь 👍
hello from germany. thank u for ur videos and ur competend commentary!
Thanks! I like you let the event run, downtime is part of the pleasure for me, builds tension, immersion....
the last match may have been with just little controversy but the initial match between Nizoe and Pino, I think Nizoe won with some points missed by the ref so I think it pretty much evens out.
Really like the long form video for team events keep it up!
Great video! Thanks!
Great thank you life is like a Judo you must be accept what will happen and be humble.
Thank you for the commentary as always
Vielen Dank 👍🏻👍🏻😎
L'urlo ferino che produce il nero francese, dopo l'ippon, così sgraziato e rabbioso, è il perfetto contrario dello spirito del Judo.
French Judo is not Judo
I love ur videos bro. Thanks ❤
Very nice ref of the match. Keep it up like this!
I really like this team format.
Excellent comments, thx!
If you learn about the history of judo in France and the way in which this sport is socially integrated, you will understand why France is, after Japan, the 2nd Judo nation in the world.
In France, unlike Japan, judo for children is not primarily teach as a competitive sport. It is primarily where parents send their children to do some gymnastics and learn discipline and respect for others. It was the influence of Shozo Awazu that gave French judo its “soul”. Which means that there are a lot of judo practitioners at very young ages. A very large pyramid base in number. And the best, who like the competition aspect, stay.
You can make incidental arm/hand contact with the leg *only* if you also are gripping with the same side hand. So you can't just have your hand floating out in space and use your elbow to clamp on the leg. If she had some sort of grip she would have been fine. A classic Kouchi Makikomi from an ippon seoi grip is fine, for instance. Shinjiro Sasaki has some great videos showing the still-legal technique on his IG feed.
Yep, the last win was clearly a robbery.

Really enjoyed the full video. Don’t cut it up. It’s great like this. Thanks
Thank you very much.
You are welcome!
It was a real rollercoaster but I regret that ko uchi makikomi isn't allowed, I don't find anything dangerous about it. Judo in competition is now so different than all the throws we learned. They say they want to promote beautiful judo but the winning team won on penalties not on a throw.
I would also like them to switch categories from one year to another, to really involve the whole team, that would be interesting.
Indeed... I think we cannnot talk about judo when guys salute en then rush morote-gari or ura-nage only with strength. But here, I believe those actual rules are non-sense. Grabbing the leg for that beautiful ko-uchi-gari-makkikomi or for a kata-gurumma must remain allowed... That's part of judo!
Louis Braille was a remarkable little boy. I think he died at the age of 16? Anyway, he left us Braille and I am very pleased to see that you are immortalizing his name by adopting it as your handle. Cheers!
That’s france’s fault they can’t do judo properly
@@episode6691 Just like you can’t do English properly.

I congratulate the commentator, he was very good!
Keep doing the full final commentating! Even other finals
Very good 💯
Thanks for the commentary! Re. pronunciation question, "e" is pronounced as "ee" (in some contexts, eg "me") in English and essentially no other languages that use Roman letters. Typically "i" will be "ee", which is presumably why it is "ee" in Hiragana for example. If you're reading a random European language you will be better served by using the Hiragana pronunciation than by using the naive English one!
2:07 hurt my neck looking at that. Wonderful throw though.

When i competed years ago locally i always thought the refs broke the newaza way too fast and i think they still do. Give them a chance to work a bit.
team France was great. they deserve to honor.
Great Yudo 👍
Disagree that Nizoe lost. There were no tomo nagae attempts. She was going for an arm bar ever time
Blows my mind that she got a shido for it once, fouled a different way, then went back to the armbar TWICE, with two shidos already on the board. What did she think was going to happen??
2:35 😮da hawamoto and da black guy that was fast 💨
That was a scary fall for Hashimoto. Both arms entangled, dropped full weight onto head and neck. 😔...
I fell like that once in a tournament (also poorly executed uchi mata by my opponent) and had a severe concussion with both retrograde and anterograde amnesia...

It's not allowed to do joint locks if the opponent grabs the shirt?
Japan Vs Africa
Great video but I completely agree with the conclusion. I feel everything is forbiden in Judo now, half of the techniques I learned when I was a teenager are now banned, we should not call this sport Judo anymore... (One of my favorite, Teguruma is banned :( ) .Some of these ban was supposed to make judo less relying on strengh (like Georgian wrestling type of throws ) but I feel it did not really achieve anything, strengh is still very important in Judo. Now the rules are more complicated and ppl not familar with the Sport don't understand what's happening, like what happened in the last game is just ridiculous (way too much room for interpretation and obviously bring a lot of controversy with it).
This championship has taught me that I just don't understandnthe rules any more.
Japan❤
Funakubo damn !!!
The white uniform big guy straight outta Baki.
This can't possibly be Japan's A-Team.
49:36 Since 2022 you can grap the leg at the end of the move 😟
Kinda weird watching a Judo player at this level just completely give up on an armbar! I dont blame them if they dont like having sore elbows like us BJJ lunatics haha
❤
It s not “hey me” its “haime” like in je t’aime, which every one one the planet would love to say.
Change the rules where you can lift the head for hadaka
jime
at 2:55- 2:59, surely that is a false attack. From the angle we see, Pinot didn't have any grip but still kicked Niizoe. Shouldn't that be a shido, for a false attack and for just blatantly kicking and not doing any judo technique?
Congratulations Japan❤❤❤
Congratulations of what, just a mistake's referees!!
@@lorenzodazzi3957 ALWAYS congratulate the winner. Judo is a sport of honour and respect.
@@sambrown5890 So if it's an honour sport, we can say they won with a mistake's referees, so they don't deserve, they are just lucky
So many technicalities in sport judo..
WHY DOESN'T THE UNIT FIGHT?
Go Japan!From 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Distracting commentary (and at times irrelevant) . Only reason I left the sound on was to hear what was the actual match commentary.
There should be a rule on fighting for the grip it takes up too much time, we did not do that in the '60s I prefer the 2-point system Ippon & waszari. Judo is or should be about throwing it's more exciting than what was demonstrated here.
Well can be more dangerous too !
And stamina and great balance is also a part of judo ! ^^
The first match too be completely honest how was that a score on france part when he threw him on his head . Which explains japans competitor Headache....
Thanks for uploading. However, your comments on the French team and particularly the French women players were inappropriate, inaccurate, and detracted from the video. Bias? More like prejudice.
Yes he don t like french team
Last match jiujitsu and aikido
I’m not really as well versed on the judo rules I I should be. But my main experience is in BJJ. And from a my BJJ perspective that wasn’t even anywhere close to what a flying armbar should be. Her hips were too far back, and there was no real isolation or posture break. It absolutely looked like a tomoe nage attempt and she just went to the next available thing. I don’t think it should’ve been a penalty as in my opinion, she wasn’t going for a flying armbar first and just transitioned to it.
That aside. Great match. Great video. I love this channel! 52:13
was a shit tomoe nage attempt, that was cause it was shido
japan vs i don't really sure 🙂✌️
last japanese girl her sleeve is longer than France girl.
internet judo judges just emerged out of nowhere 🤣 Rules are there to regulate the sport. If you complain so much about it then tell them to compete in mma competitions
Sorry, I'm old school Judo. She grabbed the leg... another day at the office. She went in an arm lock while her opponent was standing... that's what I used to do. Gripped both sides of the gi while attempting a throw... gee, that used to be the goal.
I am happy Japan Won
This is why I dislike judged sports….money talks.
