Great video. The 4Runner has a low hanging gas tank that hinders it off road. I had a ‘17 SR5 with only Atrac and it went everywhere with upgraded tires (BFG AT’s) stock size and no lift. You have to pick your lines a little more carefully but the tire tread makes all the difference. it’s just such a great overall vehicle. I’m buying another one and am thinking about the pro with this color. My SR5 had 100k miles with only oil changes and a door lock regulator replacement. Sold it for 4k less than I bought it for at 6 years old.

Man that's great to hear! That's the thing about the 4runners, they are so reliable and have such a good name around them that if you take care of it mechanically and aesthetically you're not going to lose much of you bought at a decent price! I know that this 4runner would benefit with some bigger tires. I'm curious to see if the next generation 4runner will be able to take a bigger wheel set without rubbing? Also, thanks for watching OldRush!

The trd pro runner is assembled in Japan. I only knew this before seeing the door when I bought mine and it was still boarding a ship in Japan. I did notice you didn’t fully utilize the 4wd on this. That may have balanced out a bit better on that hill climb. No dif lock and mts would have gone way better. A single locker is good for brute force but there is a computer there. @@reviewedbytim The clearance very much could be an issue but the biggest issue is you didn't have the equivalent features turned on with the 4runner it seems. When you put the Defender into off-road it automatically turns on a bunch of off-road features. With the 4runner most of those features you have turn on yourself. Good example is at 12:42 when the Defender pulls up on the hill, you can hear the clear sound of the traction control system popping. Also the lack of wheel spin with the Defender shows the traction control was working as that's what it does. To get a more equivalent setup for the 4runner at the very least, turn on the Multi-Terrain Select to Mud and Sand. That can be run in 4Hi as long as you stay under 7 mph I think it is. If you want to get the 4runner closer to what the Defender had set then you should use the crawl control. It will control all 4 wheels independently similar to what was going on with the Defender. Including the popping heard from the Defender but MUCH louder lol.

4runner trd off-road with fox shock absorbers and all terrain tyres and smaller rims and need to climb the hill 2 to 3 times while the defender did it at the first try.
The defender has a bigger rims, normal tyres and unfancy shocks. Yes it is more expensive and using air suspension.
My opinion trd segment is useless and just a fancy segment only fit for north american market.

I can agree with you that the conditions made a slight difference. To me the main factor was the truck bottoming out (you can kind of see it in the video). For example.. There are two different hills that I climbed in that video. The first hill is where we saw the struggle. The second part of that hill is noticeable steeper but the wheelbase of the 4runner benefits from it... so it went up it without spinning too much. The first hill wasn't good for that specific wheelbase even though it was short (causing it to bottom out). I'll bring another one out on a dry day to test again! Just to be sure! Chilll.......I had them both turned on.. you can see the rear diff locked from the rear tire view.
The reasons people don't bring defenders off-road are because...
      1. They're 100k.
      2. They're really expensive if they break.
      3. They will break.
      4. You can't really tow them.
They're extremely capable but not the best for real world situations.
Also, I daily a land cruiser so I'm not sure what you mean "stick with flashy".

Hey, you gotta be kidding, right?
Didn't see you use the lockers or MTS with A-track, which are game changers off-road. That 4Runner articulation is serious business, man. Try more off-roading with it before making videos. Not trying to be a fanboy just 'cause I own one, but I've seen what this beast can do. My 4Runner, with only a 2.5” lift, has been places where only tricked out, super expensive Jeeps can go.

In the you can see the wheels completely locked in the rear (no separate spin). You can also see the A-Trac doing its thing. If you look closely as the video you can see that it tends to bottom out. There's 2 hills in this video. One is significantly more steep. But, the 4runners wheelbase benefits from the taller hill and that's the one that you can see it go up without much spin. The first attempt was a short hill but challenges its wheelbase. If you have one that's lifted it's it's going to significantly change its climbing characteristics. Glad to have your input.. also, thanks for watching! I'll have more 4runners take on the same obstacle. Might even grab a lifted one to change things up!

Bad performance as expected from the 4runner even not tough terrain this is an easy test for land cruiser 70 even the land cruiser 70 doesn't has A-track or crawl control or any computer help
    1- manual transmission
    2- front and rear diffs
    3- no computer help
    4- front solid Axel
5- your experience and ready to go
There is no need for fancy suspensions or tyres only stock

You took video on two different days, the 4Runner when it took the climb had muddy grounds as it just rained. The Land Rover looked to have dry ground with no mud. Total different sorry.

    • @reviewedbytim
      @reviewedbytim Před rokem

That's a fair point Arthur. From my analysis, the 4 runner was bottoming out and that's what caused it to struggle slightly. There are two hills in that video. The second being the more difficult one. The first one is less steep but challenges the 4runners wheelbase. The second one was much more steep and about a foot taller.. but because of the increase in height the 4runners wheelbase benefitted from that. I was really surprised to see that the 4runner went up the 2nd hill so easily. With that all being said, I will be bringing back another 4runner to challenge that same spot with drier condition.. I also hope to bring the Defender back on soggier conditions. Thanks for your input, and as always, thanks for watching!
