I took some serious hurt in combat myself... still recovering from it. Lost half my stomach, a nice chunk of intestines, my gall bladder, my spleen, my left leg, and my left eye is absolutely fucked. Most days, I don't even understand how I manage not to eat a bullet myself by lunch. My life is just unending pain.
But Marcus inspires me to keep pushing... even if it kills me, I'm getting back into the fight. Somehow, someway... I won't let that shit kill me. Not without one hell of a fight.
When Death comes for me, it better come strapped. Because I'll greet it like everything else that has tried to kill me in my life... with a big fuck you and a foot up its ass.
Now, if I could only relearn how to trust that it's just a fart...

As I've said before Murica buckles at the knees against any developed nation let alone the likes of China or Russia.

Tons of donors there ($50,000 plates) and a lot of the donors were doing a photo op with him, and I was just going to say hi and get a photo, had maybe 20 people in front of me. He saw me. Pushed through the crowd and came up to me and shook my handand said "god about time I see someone I'd rather talk to than these fucks who just want a photo op for their business". My brother was in Afghanistan back in 2006 while my other brother was in Iraq going door to door. I remember feeling ashamed because I always wanted to rep my country and them being older took my path. But when I was in prison and they were overseas I felt like such a POS. My brothers are heroes and I was a lowlife. I remember the CO would let me talk on the phone with my bros because he was a vet himself. Mortars dropped on them and I thought he was dead. I turned my life around so quick. Prison ain't shit what these brave men go thought is. I wish I could have represented my country as well instead of being a loser at the time. That is absolutely true, I found that a great way to manage pain is to compare it to past pains, if its about equal I survived the last one I will this one too, if its lower I just think about that time and the pain just lowers quite a bit or at least my perspective of it, I'm able to gain control over it. I am in chronic pain. I have been on pain killers for a decade. I find it strange that their are sometimes (very rare but still strange) when I don’t need a pill even though I have been working physically hard that day. The only answer I have come up with is related to expectations. When I am backpacking I don’t expect to be comfortable and that can reduce the need for a pain killer. Compare that to after a hard day at home you fully expect some relief when you sit down on the couch. With chronic pain that literally Never goes away that relief is not there and that is when the claustrophobic nightmare begins. You can not find relief and that is where I am so thankful for the pain killers that I have. They a life giving for me.

I was in Afghanistan in 2004 and it changes everything about who you are. That muscle memory never leaves you. I find that I’m hyperaware of everything around me. For me it wasn’t the firefights it was that build up to it and it stayed with me. I’ve been out since 2013 and I still do it. I read the book about a year after I got back. I survived Afghanistan and ended up getting hospitalized for a shoulder injury back home. So I was on light duty and I read this book and by the end of it I was openly crying about it while I was at work. It was the same thing when I read In the Company of Heroes by Mike Durant. That kind of thing changed my view on things like this. When I went and saw Lone Survivor I went during the day when there wouldn’t be a lot of people because I had being surrounded by idiots who’d rather be on their -Hines than watch the movie. I watched it and my wife could tell I was tense. She grabbed my hand and the rest of the movie played out and at the end when they’re showing all of the guys who didn’t make it I sobbed and this Vietnam Vet came up to me and put his arm around me and we stood there for a minute and then I went on. It’s weird how you change.

That dude was abused to a really sad level and went through the ringer his entire life. He passed the physical screening portion of Delta's OTC, including the long walk, and if I'm not mistaken he obliterated the record on that long walk. He failed the psychological screening portion of it due to his sort of lone wolf mentality and his inability to jive with Delta's social dynamic. SOFREP has several articles on personal stories by some Unit operators and a few of them include some level of fraternal and racist banter (all in good fun) and they sort of revealed that (intentionally) during the screening. The lone wolf mentality definitely plagued him during his time with the teams too - just didn't click nor did he even want to. David is an absolute machine and unique specimen - a great example of what can be done with the power of the mind.

Very profound interview. Kudos to Joe Rogan. I found the decision Marcus made to re-engage in the combat world to be likely therapeutic. He says "I had to". Whatever drove him to re-engage in Iraq I feel like probably saved his sanity and did not allow the horror he lived in Afghanistan to consume him. Seems like maybe the re-engagement in Iraq allowed the Afghanistan experience to become somewhat of an experience along a bit of a continuum as opposed to an event that destroyed his ability to cope - at least for him. One uncle broke his thumb.. played football on offense and defense for months without realizing it was broken.. My other uncle (former marine) had knee pain for a while.. he does hardwood floors so it made sense.. works out twice a day in his 50s as well. After months of tests.. They realized his hip had been shattered for almost a year. He just complained about pain in his knee like it wasn't that big of a deal. It's true. Learning to manage pain is all mental.

You can still be a man without pretending you're in the same league with someone that is/was one of the top 0.00001% of war fighters in the world. Very few men can even endure BUDS, myself included. Even less can be successful at and survive the things he went through. Even less than that can come back from it, and then deploy again. Even less than that can come home and be a functioning member of society. It's a very small, elite group of men that can do all of this. Thankfully lately these men are getting the recognition they deserve, however none of us that haven't been through it will ever understand their mindset and how good they really are/were.
