Fragonard began his artistic education under François Boucher, a prominent Rococo painter of the time. He then continued his studies in Rome, where he was influenced by the works of Venetian Renaissance painters, as well as the classical art and architecture of the city. Upon returning to Paris, Fragonard developed his unique style that combined elements of Rococo exuberance with a hint of classical influence.
His career flourished during the 1760s and 1770s, and he received numerous commissions from the French aristocracy and upper classes. Fragonard's paintings often portrayed scenes of romance, amorous encounters, and playful flirtation. One of his most famous works, "The Swing" (1767), captures the essence of the Rococo style with its whimsical composition and charming depiction of a young woman on a swing, caught between two admirers.
Fragonard's versatility was evident in his ability to paint not only large-scale, elaborate works but also smaller, more intimate pieces. His mastery of technique allowed him to capture the play of light and shadow, the textures of fabrics, and the expressions of his subjects with great finesse. His works often featured lush gardens, luxurious interiors, and fashionable individuals, reflecting the lifestyle of the French aristocracy.
However, as the Rococo style fell out of favor and was gradually replaced by Neoclassicism, Fragonard's popularity waned. The French Revolution further disrupted the art market and the lives of many artists, including Fragonard. He continued to paint, but his financial situation deteriorated, and he struggled to find commissions.
Fragonard's later years were marked by financial difficulties and personal tragedies, including the death of his wife and son. He eventually withdrew from the art world and lived a more secluded life. He passed away on August 22, 1806, in Paris.
While his popularity declined during his lifetime, Fragonard's works experienced a revival of interest in the 19th century and beyond. His unique blend of Rococo elegance and emotional depth continues to captivate art enthusiasts and scholars, making him an important figure in the history of French art.
