In pre-Islamic Zoroastrianism we find a story of a winged horse-like creature with a human head. It their texts (The Book of Arta Viraf), a saintly priest Arta Viraf made a night journey to heaven under the guidance of angel Sarosh. He passed from one utopia (heaven) to another and reached the presence of Ormazd, the great deity of the whole universe. He saw the heavens and how happy the inhabitants were, Ormazd commanded him to return and tell people what he saw and to tell his followers to pray five (5) times a day. Sound familiar?
