5 Things We HATE About Our 2024 Audi RS3!!

  • 👋 Here is the inevitable video of things we hate about our brand new 2024 Audi RS3! After a few months of ownership with the newest generation 8Y Audi RS3, my wife and I do have some complaints with the car. If you are looking to buy a new RS3, overall it's a really fun car, but there are some parts to this car that I wish were better and possibly could deter a future buyer. So here are the top 5 things about the new Audi RS3 that we hate!
    The steering feel is the biggest thing. Even in RS Performance mode the RS3 steering never really tightens up that much. It also doesn't feel that direct. It's a variable steering rack that adjusts depending on speed and angle, but I just don't like it. Feels very electronic rather than mechanical. Honestly this is the biggest thing that would make me not want to own this car. With the RS3, I realize now how much I love a car that steers incredibly direct. You just don't get that with this car unfortunately. It has improved with the lowering springs and wheel spacers. But the steering just needs to be improved from factory.
    Using cruise control is a nice feature to have on long trips. Normally you can easily speed up or down in increments of 5. The RS3 cruise control stalk is very sensitive and you just have to hold it while it goes by 5. However it goes so fast that you can hardly time it right and you'll end up increasing your speed by 20 or 30 mph when you are trying to go up by 10.
    The rev hang is weird in this car. If you floor it in comfort mode, it downshifts and stays in a high RPM for a very long time. You'd think in comfort it'd always try to upshift. But this car is very on its toes and feels pretty aggressive even when in comfort mode.
    sing the paddle shifters is fun, but you always get the sense that this car is still taking over. It won't upshift in RS Performance mode which is nice. But it downshifts very aggressive on its own even when in manual. Other drive modes it will up shift for you. So I'd like a bit more control with the paddles. Lastly the grille is huge! Stock stance it looks a bit odd. But now lowered with a wider stance, the car looks so much better and your eye is now drawn to the fenders rather than the grille. So overall there truly are some aspects of the RS3 we don't like. If this was my specific car, I probably would buy a BMW M2 over this. However my wife likes Audi, wants a 4 door car and AWD. So this for her is the ideal car and has more pros over the competition.

    I’ve owned one since Nov ‘22 and I think the rev hang in comfort mode when you floor it is due to the car’s overall set up being aggressive. Keeping you in higher revs for a while as you’ve just floored it is the car thinking that you may do it again, it wants to be ready as your previous input was aggressive. As an RS model, it should be this way.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Yeah it definitely is. I expect that in Dynamic mode and Performance mode. But you'd think comfort mode the car would chill out. In my GTR, race mode was crazy aggressive. But in normal mode it tried to relax quicker. I'd odd to take 30 seconds for the car to finally upshift after flooring especially in comfort mode.

    • @FastRedPonyCar
      @FastRedPonyCar Před 2 měsíci +2

      I've got a BMW X3M competition and my car does the exact same. Even with the transmission in the least aggressive setting, if I get on it, those RPM's are going to hang for a while before it shifts. I honestly wish it weren't like this. My Scatpack charger I had a while back had the same ZF 8 speed transmission as the X3 and it's behavior/programming, etc was much much better. Super relaxed in normal mode but really fast in sport mode.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@FastRedPonyCar Yeah I wish comfort mode was more relaxed. Even in my GTR, with the transmission in Save mode, it was very tame. Normal mode was what you’d expect. And Race mode would stay in high rpm for a long time. So it’d be nice if I could tune the modes a bit better. It already stays aggressive in Dynamic and Performance mode. So you’d think comfort would relax

    I think your car is a Tesla Model 3, dude, not an Audi RS3. You are more worried about the smoothness of a freaking beast such as an RS3. Your car is definitely a Tesla Model 3.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Did you not listen the the video? But you'd think in comfort mode the car could relax. My R35 GTR would tone down a lot in the conservative drive mode. RS3 is always on its toes. Makes sense to be like that in the performance modes. But comfort mode you'd think would calm down

    • @user-wi4ci2jo4u
      @user-wi4ci2jo4u Před 28 dny

      @@BrosFOURRSpeed it's half the price of a r35 gtr though so it won't have functions like those for the exhaust. You can always get an aftermarket one that's remote controlled

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 28 dny

      @@user-wi4ci2jo4u I never talked about the exhaust. The RS3 has an active exhaust stock that works great with the drive modes. My GTR stock did not have an active exhaust. I’m talking about how the transmission will stay very aggressive even in comfort mode. You’d think the transmission could relax more in comfort mode. Other cars at this price do a very good job at that. Supra, M2, M340. Literally ever car I’ve driven at this price will stay very relaxed in comfort and then get very aggressive in sport mode. RS3 is the o lot car where comfort mode will still have the transmission get super aggressive

    Have you considered swapping out the plastic rear end links? I've heard it helps alleviate the floaty feeling you were describing. It would be really cool to see a back to back drive and hear your impressions on whether it made a difference or not.

  • @JVette01
    @JVette01 Před 3 měsíci +4

    I think the reason that trans is downshifting automatically for you is so you don't bog/stall out the engine being in way too high of a gear for the speed. All the automatic cars I've had seem to do the same thing, unless you're referring to something else? Great video btw :)

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 3 měsíci

      It is. However normally after you floor it and let off the car will upshift and go back to normal in a second or two. This takes like 20 seconds to realize you aren't driving aggressive anymore

    • @JVette01
      @JVette01 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@BrosFOURRSpeedYeah I can understand your concern there, but downshifting from being too low in the rev range seems normal.

  • @jimsdetailinggarage
    @jimsdetailinggarage Před 2 měsíci

    Have you messed around with the torque settings. You can send more torque to the rear wheels. That will eliminate some of the torque steering. Also, in comfort mode can you use the + paddle shifter to eliminate the rev hang?

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah hitting the paddles will let you be able to just upshift. But it'd still be nice if it drove more relaxed in comfort mode. Not much different as far as transmission aggressiveness in the performance mode. I''ve played with the RS Torque Rear mode. Doesn't feel much different to be honest

    Have you checked the tire pressures in the RS3? In the winter time (cold weather) the tire pressures drop quite a bit. Low tire pressure will lead to numb steering feel.

    Bought my 24’ RS3 w/ 1400m on it. Performance is insane. Quick af. The only issue I’ve had is the front brake squeal. It happens when I’m at slow speeds gradually breaking to a stop. Very annoying. Dealership has told me “it’s normal”. After the third time I’ve brought it in, they soaked the pads and told me it’ll be fine for up to 6 months. I can deal with that but I hope it’s not a temporary bandaid.
    To your point about the grill…idk why you’re hating? That grill is absolute 🔥 Should have got the black optic package instead of the blue🖤🖤🖤

  • @joecamaro
    @joecamaro Před 2 měsíci

    Regarding the cruise control, my other car is an '17 Alltrack. Holding the cruise control lever raises the setting in 5 MPH increments like you said. I discovered the RS3 doesn't work that way when I held the lever and the next thing I knew, the car was exceeding 90 mph. In comfort mode. Now I just bump it 1 MPH at a time. Not a big deal.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah it goes in 5mph increments. It just goes so fast you have to really watch it or you'll be going 90 in no time. Really wish there was some tactile feedback like my Supra to go 5 at a time. I hardly use cruise tho in the car anyways and normally I get to my speed and set it to where I am.

  • @TheMostSmokeCrew
    @TheMostSmokeCrew Před 3 měsíci +1

    @BrosFOURRSpeed I think the steering feel is a combination of a few things. From what you described it sounds like you want the steering wheel input to move the car to the left and the right faster. I do think the design of the steering feel was to be a little less quick to pull to the left and right without larger adjustments in steering wheel movement. Audi probably did this so the car would have less chance of getting twitchy at high speeds and it would be easier for people with less steering control to drive safer, faster, especially over rough roads.
    It has a wider track width from tire to tire than the rear which will make it feel like the front is leading and the back is following. This was the best way to keep grip on the front wheels and maximize grip in corners. It also lets the rear end rotate around faster.
    The wider tires on the front might have something to do with it as well. It is sending 50% power up front and to the rear at all times though. I find when I drive mine in a slow curve letting off the gas lets the car turn in more and then getting back on the gas lets the rear diff oversteer the outside wheel to push me around the corner. It is a lot of technology doing work behind the curtains like a well orchestrated symphony, which is a beautiful thing, but also why old, raw, sports cars are also cool. Different strokes for different folks really and there are lots of cool cars out there to choose from.
    Maybe aftermarket wheels with good offset and wider rear tires will help.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It's unsettling at high speeds tho. You start to turn and then the car turns faster or slower then you anticipate. So it's hard to judge how much input is needed in fast turns. I want it more direct. I've heard people say doing a square setup helps a ton as well. Probably just match the rear tires to the front. Lots of good mods to do to keep making the car better. So far the springs, spacers and exhaust woke up this car a ton!

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 3 měsíci

    Rev hang in Drive mode is normal, if it does upshift early and you apply trottle again, it will take time to downshift again... After all you are downshifting for a reason - to overtake for example, and downsifts in Drive mode generally being slow (and comfortable) , preserving the clutch(es), pulling the + buttun with the finger sorts that out ( going to M mode ). I got caught out with the cruise control too, Manual mode is fine, it depends what you want to do - I rarelu use full rev range if not in performance mode - there is enough torque till 5000 rpm and enauhg gears to get me trough.... RS mode suits me fine with the quick downshifts. Steering is well weighted for a car that has decend comfort mode/s and it is a compromise compared to M3 ( that has a totally different drivetrain configuration )

    @brandons9138 Před 16 dny

    Of course the car is not going to up shift right away after stomping on it like that. It's staying ready incase you need to get on it again. I'd much rather have it do that, than up shift and get caught out when you need more power. You can also use the paddle shifters and force an upshift if it's annoying to you. After a bit the car will default back to full auto mode.
    Your thoughts on steering are making think twice about the RS. I put a $2000 deposit down on a 2024 RS that should be here in about 2 weeks. My current daily is an Alfa Romeo Giulia (the 2.0T, not the Quadrifoglio). That car feels amazing behind the wheel. Since my local Alfa dealership is now gone I don't want the hassle of an almost 50 mile drive one way to the next closest dealer. Have you even driven a Giulia? If so how does the steering feel in the RS vs the Giulia?

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 15 dny

      I hear that. However in Comfort mode you'd think the priority in that setting would be to drive....comfortable. In Dynamic or RS mode it makes perfect sense to be aggressive and ready to go. But it would be nice to relax more in Comfort mode. My old Nissan GTR was super tame in the comfort setting. But crazy aggressive in the race setting. New M3 Comps are easy in comfort mode and crazy aggressive in sport modes. RS3 needs better adjustments.
      I've added lowering springs, wheel spacers, front and rear swaybar end links and the handling has improved a lot! I still don't like the FWD biased system to where hard accelerations out of turns you feel it in the steering wheel. But it got a lot better with the mods. So thats still my one complaint. Test drive the RS3 and see before paying for it. We do really like the car now and it's a fast little rocket of a car. So we like it overall.

    I'm going to have to disagree after seeing and test driving the new M2! I find the RS3 to have much better steering, and the car is just way more raw and fun with the DCT, and that epic 5 cylinder!

      Really? Definitely different taste then. The M2 steering is heavier tho. The DCT in the RS3 feels more raw than the 8spd for sure. But the S58 packs more top end with the twin turbo. Very similar cars in many ways tho!

      @BrosFOURRSpeed The M2 steering is way too numb and has a really heavy feel, and it doesn't like to come back around on its own after turning the wheel like other cars! Your car maybe has something wrong with the steering because I find it really good! I'm amazed you like the M2 better!! Don't care about the top end on the streets, honestly, because the RS3 is ridiculously fast stock!

    You need to turn off lane keeping assist. It is what causes the steering to be lighter than normal. In my Golf R, the steering feel is so much better with lane keeping assist complete off. The system is too intrusive and annoying

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 28 dny

      I turned that off day one. It's the FWD biased system that under acceleration out of a turn, you feel some input. However now with upgraded sway bar end links, it's handling much better

    Steering feel is defienitely the downside of the MQB platform. Every GTI, R, GLI, RS3, S3, A3 all are very front wheel drive biased so you get that front steering with the rear following feel unfortunately.

    I really like your wife's car however :
    Personally I think if I'm ever to buy a car for a woman, I'd buy her a German entry level convertible in Red or White. Women generally prefer "Flashy" over performance because at the end of the day they judge each other like pictures on a wall.
    Performance cars will garner more male attention her direction since it's a male dominated niche, also 99% of other women just see an A3 sedan with big rims, a loud exhaust and probably think it belongs to her man.
    Sorry if I sound negative but women don't use a performance car the way it was meant to be used and in their heads the risks are too high.
    Anyways great car, money well spent at the end of the day. 👌

    You're categorizing "rev hang" incorrectly. The car's natural tendency to hold onto a gear and not auto upshift is not rev hang. Far from it. Rev hang is when a car holds onto higher RPM ranges because tuning doesn't allow it to wind back down to low RPMs quickly enough. This is the DNA of the RS3. No one wants a performance car that doesn't allow it's user to dictate behavior at higher limits. If this is a problem, you shouldn't be driving this car as a daily. And comfort mode was never meant to accommodate aggressive driving habits to begin with.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  Před 3 dny

      As I mentioned in the video I said the term rev hang to just describe the revs hanging up high for a while. Just to give a good relatable analogy of why I'm seeing the car do.
      However what's the point of having 6 drive modes in this car and the one labeled Comfort mode still lets the car drive overly aggressive like you expect in Dynamic or RS mode?
      My old GTR in the conservative drive mode wouldn't be aggressive at all. The M3 tones down more than this too. In every performance car I've driven, comfort mode always lets it tame itself to a basic car. This is the first performance car I've driven where comfort mode still has aggressive tendencies

      What's the point of drive mode that 'effect' the transmission, but the trans still is aggressive in comfort mode. Shouldn't comfort mode actually tone down the car?
