    I like you're comparison testing. The only thing you should be aware of is on some of the tracks with vocals, when you switch to the other speaker, the vocals no longer appear.

    The ES20 speakers sound less fatiguing and bass is reserved, whereas the Reserves have a more full hammer sound that would cause a headache after a while. Also, the Reserves sound a lot more forward nearly on every track, whereas the ES20 sounds more realistic and wide. There is some better attenuation with the Reserves overall, and favours a frontal attack, which can be good and bad. Overall though, the ES20 sound more engaging for longer listening spells, and the fact that they cost half that of the reserves, is really a no brainer. In this showdown, the ES20 prove to be the better value overall.

  • @RBS22
    @RBS22 Před 2 lety +17

    The two Polk speakers are of excellent quality, but the R200 seemed more constant to my ears, it has a better balance in music variations, while the ES20 behaves with some musical styles, maybe the crossover cut or its own construction emphasize this particularity.

      That’s just it…. In your home, this comparison (along with all the others) the difference would be more noticeable. But, it does give at least a little bit of a starting point, now that we’re in a day and age to where most of us can’t go to a store to compare them. But, you’re right, especially on line, where all kinds of things are coloring the sound, the least of which is CZcams’s compression.

    These are great presentations. To me the R200 and the XT20 both trump the ES20 in the same way. More detailed midrange and treble and tighter bass for the R200 and XT20.

  • @yvesboutin5604
    @yvesboutin5604 Před 2 lety +7

    To my ears, the R200 is the winner and by a good margin! Almost every aspect of their sound is better: definition, speed, soundstage. Even if the S20 did go a little lower in the bass, they do not have the outstanding articulation of the costlier model. Now I understand why they are twice the price ! Fun battle to listen to! Thanks!

  • @otepdotnet
    @otepdotnet Před rokem +7

    I auditioned it together with elac debut reference and Q Acoustics 3030i and ended up choosing ES20. In audio store with proper room I find it with the more tighter bass and has more bass extension and soundstage which I am looking for due I intended to use it not only for music but also for 3.1 system. Elac debut reference is great the sound signature is a bit flat and boring, the 3030i is lacking of bass extension(sub bass) but comparing this three is not a day and night difference it just a preference.. ES20 has a bigger cabinet and the bass is the main asset of this speaker so setting up to a limited space is quite tricky. I set it up first about a feet and a half away from the wall and it's sounds really muddy even tuning down the bass via equalization, I tried moving it closer to the wall and it sounds much better there is still a bit of muddiness on loud volume but equalization response much better and solve the issue. What I learn from choosing a speaker is you don't have to worry about if the bass has too much, it can be tune down via EQ but a bright speaker is harder to deal, tuning down a treble affects the overall sound quality and the even tuning down won't solve the fatiguing sound of the tweeter

      Try decreasing 600 hZ a bit, by 2 or more dB, and take around 12k all the way up to 20k down 2dB. This is from a scientific data site’s recommendation on that Polk speaker to tame a resonance in the cabinet, and its overall brightness. I’d love to hear if this eq adjustment helps!

  • @everydayden5826
    @everydayden5826 Před 2 lety +5

    I think I am more surprised at how similar they are rather than how different they are. The R 200 certainly is clearly the better speaker over all, but it is twice the price and I expected there to be an even bigger difference than I heard. I believe the room that you put them in, and what you drive them with, will make them or break them for you. At 400 bucks though, the ES 20 probably has some stiff competition, but so does the R 200. I'm a big fan of the Wharfedale 12.2 and that will be my next speaker purchase unless the Polks come down a lot in price. To me they just sound better for the type of music that I enjoy.

    I don't hear anything objectional about the ES20. They're decently balanced, with fair bass and open, basicly non harsh treble. Theyr'e maybe a touch thin but the R200's don't kill them. They do sound very similar to the S20's though. I think I hear a slightly smoother, more revealing sound particulary in their midrange, wich is the weekspot on the S20's to me. That said, the improvement seems fairly small.

    Will have to listen to this test with headphones. I heard no difference, none. When I noticed the switch over visually and with eyes closed, they sounded the same. Again, will listen with headphones to hear any difference. The big problem with this test is that there are not enough before-and-after sitches between speakers. Do more than one per song and make sure the song played one speakers a is also played on speaker b that is identical. You test makes it hard to determine which speaker is better when a human voice is played on one speaker but not the other. Rework your test. Maybe break down sound in 3 second segments and flip between speakers over and over again. And then one can hear the difference. You test is good but greatly needs to be modified.
    With headphones, I can hear a slight difference between speakers. I had to back up 5 seconds each time there was a switchover in speakers to hear the difference, and unfortunately, the musical piece has changed enough to hear the difference. Another problem is your selection of songs. Get something different that really will expose the difference, like soundtracks to famous movies, some older blues songs like East-West and "Where's There's Smoke, There's Fire" by The Blues project. Also one of the best to test is from any Alan Parsons Project CD/LP. Of course, there's Pink Floyd. From these samples you will get a much better variety of sounds than the junk you play.

  • @davlippo7
    @davlippo7 Před rokem +3

    I'm wondering why the ES20 is getting bad negative opinions here. The AudioScience analysis guy gave it a home run and he never gives home runs, or not many. He doesn't care about price he just runs the tests and shows the results. The cheap audio man also liked them. I just got a pair today and i'm listening to them now. Another point is that if you don't play the speaker at full volume like most of us how would you know from this test which is better? I do hear the sound stage changing and it should. I'd expect the R200 to handle full volume better due to cost but I'd never play them like that so this test means little. The pinnacle probably sucks if it's not pointed directly at you. It's a laser and the dome is a wide beam. So many factors without even adding your personal space into the mix.

    Reading the other comments here, I had to go back and listen again to see if there's something wrong with my hearing, and what I heard is that the ES20 are VERY inconsistent. On some songs they sound fine, and not a whole lot different than the R200, but on some other songs the mids and highs sound veiled and recessed compared to the R200. It seems to really depend on how the song is mixed. I definitely don't want a speaker that plays nice with some music, and not well with other music. There's something seriously amiss about their overall balance to cause that, which smacks of poor linearity and questionable engineering, to say the least

      The ES are very disappointing, but the R series are amazing, as are the very affordable S series, the S15 and S20 are awesome for their price, and the R200 is one of the best speakers under $1000 from anyone

      @@DougMen1 Personally, I think that the old Polk ranges were better, for example RTI, each opinion is very respectable, but spend around 1000 dollars on bookshelf speakers, surely a little less but there is to add supports if I do not have them yet, at these prices already You can buy Triangle Borea BR8 for $ 999, occasionally with Black Friday or Christmas discounts you can also get MA Brocne 500 and Dalí Obreron 7 for about $ 1,100, even the bookshelf version of these 3 models is still better than Reverse 200, but this just my opinion

      @@emmanuellasker7764 And all those speakers you mention are at least 1 1/2 times the price of the R200. Besides, we're talking about bookshelf speakers, not floorstanding ones, which are often too big for small rooms, and have less placement flexibility, as well as other problems. I had the RT5 in 1995. They cost $330 then, which is $575 in today's dollars, or very close to the cost of the R200. More recent Polks that you speak of, like the RTI4 and RTIA1 weren't as good IMO. I had the RTI4, and the tweeter was too shrill for my taste. The S20 is $300, which would be $175 in 1995 dollars. Tell me a speaker that cost $175 in 1995 that sounds as good as them, or a $300 speaker today that is significantly better. I don't know of one. I like the Bronze 50, but I may prefer the R200 to the Bronze 100. I had the second generation Bronze 1 and 2, and IMO the older Bronzes were better sounding than newer ones. They had much fuller midrange, while the new ones have a dip in the midrange and hotter tweeters, because they're trying to rob some sales from B&W and Klipsch, for people that like those speakers with a V shaped response, instead of a linear and accurate one, like the older Bronzes had. I haven't heard the Polk R series or the current Bronzes in person. I'm just going by what I hear on CZcams channels. I like the Triangle BR03 a lot, but I haven't heard any Dali speakers to form an opinion of them. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter much, because I'm on SS, and I can't afford any of them, but we've heard the R200s compared to a lot of speakers here on this channel, and they compare very favorably to all of them, including the more expensive EVO 4.2 and LS50 Meta

      @@DougMen1 Indeed, the treble of the RTI range was the least successful, too much metal for my taste, currently this problem has other speakers like B&W, Focal, at the end of the day each person has their preferences, if you like R200 more, I have nothing to object , but for my taste I prefer Obreron 3, Borea 3, greetings
