We lived in Opelika for three years. Of course it's a college town (Auburn) but we found it to be a very nice place to live. Yes, the people are very friendly. We were really surprised how be beautiful the area is and the lakes are awesome. Low taxes, close to Atlanta. What's not to like? We moved because of my job but just up I85 àbout 70 MI. Higher taxes and cost of living but still nice.

Good luck in the north. I live in southeast PA but grew up in Maryland and it’s super crowded. Parts of PA are not so crowded and I love the Amish but taxes are insane. We have yearly vehicle inspections and fuel is very expensive.

My family was thinking about living in Alabama because its affordable and we want our own home, but we all want to do more research before considering anything because we live in NYC, some of us, and the rest are in NV, so we are weighing out options on what to do, where to go and how to get the help we need for living in a state we have never lived in before.

A tinyyyyy unsolicited critique, this is just my momma echoing in my head.. tuck your chin ever so slightly when you lean into the camera ;) You are such an engaging speaker! I can tell you are excited about your topic because your eyes brighten up wide. You have that bbq sweet Southern facade, that can become overly animated if you're not mindful of your angles lol. I am the same way particularly in pictures. I compensate for my crinkled eye smile by widening them, but my chin unconsciously jutts out at the camera! So like I said, my mom always reminded me to tuck my chin and I couldn't help but impose myself on you... Bless me!!

I've lived in Alabama my entire life....what I can say is...yes...things are cheaper. But they gotta be because most places only pay 10$ per hour. But that doesn't mean it's more affordable. Rent is still extremely high...so yeah if you can afford to buy a house that's "cheaper"...but good luck renting anywhere on 10$ an hour. Also there's nothing to do here. The nearest amusement park is in Georgia....not Alabama. Alabama don't have an amusement park. There is a beach though.
And I'm not sure which people she's met that are "friendly" but people in Alabama are not friendly. Most are extremely religious and like to push their ideals onto you. They will say you're gonna go to hell with a smile on their face. I guess the smile is "friendly". She's right...there's no hustle and bustle. But good luck finding anywhere with a sidewalk. Or a bus stop....or a bike lane. Yes, there are places that have those things but most do not. You've gotta heavily rely on a vehicle. Traffic is decent though. She's also correct on the school system. It's very poor. We're far behind. Our school system also doesn't teach things other schools teach. The field trips also suck because all the money in our schools get put into football.
