  • In the basement of the Bloomfield Steak and Seafood House in Bloomfield, NJ there is something truly remarkable. Deep in the cellar, it is a link to the roots of American history and the 'underground railroad.'

That house in Bloomfield was owed by my Great Grandfather, Michael Higgins, at the beginning of the 1900’s. I remember my Mother telling me that it had been part of the Underground Railroad… can’t believe I’m now seeing that family home on CZcams and hearing the history! ❤️

I just posted that that house belonged to my Great Grandfather, the Higgins Family, in the early 1900’s. They also owned the land that Bloomfield Savings Bank was built. My uncle, Harold Higgins, president of the bank when I was growing up in Glen Ridge, gave me my first job there as a teenager 🤗

There are churches in NYC that have tunnels as well that was a part of the underground railroad.

Interesting to know. NY didn't ban slavery until about the 1830s but that still leaves another 30 years or so but I wasn't thinking about the states around us.

@@nylotus Yes, I've been outside of it but the last time I was there, it was by appointment only to get in. There is also Weeksville in Brooklyn, a town founded by freed slaves which I've yet to visit (also Newtown in Queens was originally a town of freed slaves but nothing of it's original settlement still exists, which is too bad).

    Well,
I guess history evoles, the original use was for General Washington's army to make both inward and outward movements to the orange mountains during the revolutionary war of 1775-1777, New Jersey was far enough North , especially Bloomfield where the underground railroad of the late 1860s (nearly 200 years after the house was built) could have used this as a space, but all past excavations have only found 1700s artifacts, and never mentioned the underground railroad.
Background note, as a child in the cub scouts, we visited the Davis Homestead (as the place was called when my mom worked there in the late 1970s) and history was focused on the revolution, and never mentioned the civil war era... guess news fits the narrative of the day.
Still love that place, sadly the original wishing-well on the side was removed and replaced, it had old coins inbedded in the mortar on the bottom, was extremely cool.
Btw, the stable in the back had many only relics, like horseshoes and old tools.
Cool place, as I remember it

The underground railroad is a very broad story with a lot missing pieces and some know information. I try and put my mind in the escaped enslaved peoples mind and it is an amazing show of courage and resilience,. I do not recall learning this his high school. This is the part of history that many people in political positions wish to suppress.
