    I was 14 or 15 (and already a few years into progressive rock...) and saw this footage on German NDR-TV in '79. The first 1.30 min's with Steve's beautiful harmonizing Roland Guitar Synthesizer parts stunned me completely; still really amazing!

  • @ShawnBarnesbass
    @ShawnBarnesbass Před 14 lety +6

    You may notice that the guitar he is using in the intro section ('Land of a Thousand Autumns') is the Roland GR-500 which was Roland's first guitar synth. What a cool sound!! -especially on this and the 'Spectral Mornings' album

    I have the S.H. albums 'Spectral Mornings' & 'Please Don't Touch' and I saw the band at the Liverpool Empire in the Late 70's (my first ever gig!).
    Thank's for this 'trip' down memory lane. Awesome.

    The focus he puts into each sound that guitar makes, is awesome. When I saw him (1979?) I was blown away by the power and Steve's calm and stillness.

    Imagine if Genesis cut the time of ‘Your Own Special Way’ by a third (take out the twangy guitar guitar lick during the chorus while you’re at it) cut ‘Wut Gorilla’ as well and used this instead on Wind and Wuthering? It would be a perfect album.

    I never understood why tony banks and the band didn't respect enough the songs of steve.
    I think that was a big mistake and i understand now why steve left the band. They never were a band for singles hits. They were allways a band with big different great songs.

    • @chrishills2427
      @chrishills2427 Před 3 lety +3

      Lol! Banks was never gonna allow Steve to do this on the albums. Its pure full ahead Hackett as front man. Never ever gonna happen with TB and to a lesser extent Mike in charge. But hey, Trick of the Tale and Wind and Wuthering are great as is this. I'm really enjoying revisiting this era of the Genesis family.

    Gotta say, he was doing things even Blackmore wasn't doing, and as much as some seem to really dislike RB, he was a bloody genius on the axe before his time, Hendrix and Page notwithstanding. So was Steve Howe, though.

    I'd like to think this is the way he played it at the Brighton Dome, around about the first time I saw him live, there, in late June 1979 - timeless - although I'd agree, the GTR-album-version is also a great rendition - just wished he played one of these versions 'live' as part of the 2015 tour - maybe next time(!)

    This song was rejected by Genesis for inclusion on Wind and Wuthering. Instead they went with Wot Gorilla? and Steve went out the door.
    One can only imagine how the sound of Genesis would have evolved had Steve Hackett not left. Perhaps less commercial success would have followed, either way we’ll never know.

    Yes that's probably true. I think Spectoral mornings in it's first recording and starless and epitaph were all about the same period and you can see the overlap.
    It's the sheer number of top line stars that have played with Fripp made me emphasise it that way
