6L90, building the tehcm pressure switches

  • In this video, i show the rebuilding process of the pressure switches using the sonnax tool. As long as the tehcm eletrically checks ok, rebuilding the tehcm can save some big money. To buy this is about 600.00 from the dealer and then it has to be programmed.

    Thank you for doing this video! I removed the valve body on my G8 today and rebuilt the switches and replaced the 7 balls. I installed the trans go clutch select and TCC regulator valve kit along with the o ringed end plug kit. Two of the films in mine came out in two pieces. I measured the plastic balls and they were .246 to .248 but I replaced them anyway. When i get home from work tomorrow I'm going to put it back together

      It works much better. Two of the round disks for the pressure switches were bad. They looked like somebody took a hole punch to them. The company I got the kit from to repair the switches said In the directions it would be the two on the right side and they were right. It was well worth the time and effort to make this repair.

    Thanks for the informative video. I have a 07 escalade I am working on. Started slipping into neutral when accelerating a little hard or if pulling a trailer. Only code is Lost communication with the module. I bought the kit you used to repair the switches but I am now thinking it won't help. I did have the tranny rebuilt, all parts from Transtar, made no difference but the Tehcm is still the original. If I drive this car easy it works beautifully. Accelerate anywhere near hard and it flips into limp mode and stays till codes are cleared. Thanks again for a great video.

    • @mrmcd5728
      @mrmcd5728 Před 10 měsíci +1

      I installed the kit to rebuild the solenoids, kit worked well no problems with that. Unfortunately on tear down I did not find any of the little wafers torn or failed. I did install the new ones and re installed the Tehcm and it did not improve at all. I found a place in Florida, Street Smart Transmission that sells a rebuilt Tehcm, offered great customer service, answered each and every one of my questions before and after installation for a reasonable price. The Rebuilt Tehcm fixed my tranny issues. I also purchased the rebuilt valve body with it for an extra $130 I think. Sure wish I had figured this out before rebuilding the transmission. Oh well, live and learn. Could have fixed it for less than $500 rather than $3500. Ouch! @@warriorplutotrent3827

    Great video, Gary! Dorman update on the plug and play feature when I inquired on 2.7.19:
    "Good morning,
    When we first launched this program we were providing a software transfer tool that would pull the info off the old module and write it to the new one through the OBDII port. We were forced to cease and desist the use of that tool due to copyright reasons. At this time the units need to be programmed after install with GM software. That can be done by a dealer, remote programmer or through the RAP kit you mentioned.
    Sorry for any confusion."

    I've got a 2011 Chevy Express Cutaway with a KUV body and 6.0 liter motor. When I start it for the first time of the day, I can drive fine for what seems to be a random amount of time. Maybe 20 minutes, maybe an hour. Eventually, I hear a whine out of the transmission that follows the RPM of the motor. Shortly after, it acts like it's in neutral and won't go forward or reverse. I can shut it off and stop for about 30 seconds or so and it runs just fine again until the noise starts. After the first time, it does happen a lot more quickly than the first time of the day. I have noticed that if I get above 40 mph, I can drive a lot longer at the highway speeds until I slow back down to below 40 mph. One shop said to just put a new transmission in that looked at it and another thought that was probably the case with a phone call. It's only got 68,000 miles and we don't work them hard. It's actually overkill of a vehicle for what we use them for. I have an exact copy of this van in a 2012 with close to 100,000 miles and no problems. Also have 4 other 2500 vans that vary in age (newer than 2011) with similar miles and no problems. Thoughts?

      Sounds like the filter is clogging up, something may be coming apart in the trans, the noise your hearing is the pump starving for oil, when you shut the car off, all the crap in the filter will flow out until its started again, you may want to drop the pan to see whats going on

      In 5th, there is the 3,5-Reverse clutch on and the 4,5,6 clutch on. How does the trans work cold compared to hot?

    • @drloch6174
      @drloch6174 Před 6 lety

      Gary first and foremost I want to thank you for your excellent video's and the fact you are answering my questions. The trans would shift the same cold or warm in the normal mode. As you may know this car/transmission has multiple operating characteristics depending on position of the shifter. In the normal mode, shift placed in D as show on the dash, it shifted the same way cold or hot. It felt like it was going to 5th and then immediately locking up the converter, shift to 6th and lockup was fine. If I moved the shifter to the right in the drive "D" position the dash shows sD, which is the sport or manual (TUTD) mode in which case the transmission uses a different set of tables. The shift points/speeds are raised as well as TCC lockup points and the transmission shifted fine through all the gears and lockup points.
      I have HPTUners that I use to tune cars for myself and other people. What is included is what is called VCM scanner, with the scanner I scan any number of things related to the engine/transmission in real time and create a log of what was going on when I am scanning. Another thing that scanner lets me do is reset the TEHCM module and let the module relearn/auto adapt the pressures among other things. I did that last night. This morning while it was re-learning/adapting all the shifts were kind of flaky but after a number of stops and automatic shifts 1-6 and TCC locking it appears that what I was experiencing is now gone. I have to go out at lunch and run some errands in the city (Durham NC) with a number of stop and go's due to lights and traffic which will be a good test to determine if that indeed fixed the issue. I will add another reply after the run.
      Again thank you for your time and experience.

    Gary, wondering if you'll have time to find my questions on this 6 yr old video. I found your video on the 6T70 tear down. In that video twice you mention having already did a video on the TEHCM rebuild. So I searched and searched and searched but never found a 6T70 TEHCM rebuild. By chance I came across this video on the 6L90 and your electric checks for the pressure switches. I have already installed the Sonnax seal and yellow film disks in the 6T70 which fixed the long pause when moving the gear selector from reverse to drive. The change to drive is now immediate. While I had the TECHM out I removed the screen panel but found no pins to check switch ohms and continuity. Can you explain?
    This 2011 Traverse never had a shift problem even with all 4 yellow film disks bad. However, it has a shutter that remains early in the shifting 2nd or 3rd but not later in overdrive. It's apparent to me after watching your video on a 2013 Enclave it maybe the converter but I have not had that manually commanded to check for it. Since this shutter is in the lower gears not later in higher speeds I suspect what I found in another online video is that a wave plate is damaged and causing the shutter not the converter. Any thoughts are appreciated. Great videos!

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  Před 4 lety

      If this is the 6L90, no that will not fix the car, the problem your having is a clogged filter, car will move cold but no hot is a classic sign of a clogged filter. What is probably happening is your torque converter is coming a part clogging the screen

      +issa alazzabi is the pressure in the back of the solenoid is so high

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  Před 8 lety

      +issa alazzabi not sure, the solenoids are pulsed, some are normally open and some are normally closed, so some open to apply pressure and some close to apply pressure. In the back of the solenoid is the armature that needs to move for a smooth shift, but i would think the pressure could get upto maybe 150psi. As the solenoid is pulsed on, if i leaks out the back it may not be able to perform the way it should.
