    "I'm an IO psychologist, so no one knows what I do" 😂👏🏾
    If I had a nickel for every time I had to
    1: explain what IO Psych means
    2: explain how I'm not a therapist

    Fun video. If you don't want to be an academic, I think a very good option to consider is to get work experience while obtaining you MS. I'm getting my MS online through the U of Idaho while working at Idaho National Labs, and will transition to an IO/human factors practicioner roll upon graduating. I'll already have 2 or 3 years of experience the day I graduate with my masters and will have up to 6 years of experience in the same time it would take me to finish a phd with no work experience. The only reason I'm ever tempted to get a PhD now is so my clinical psych phd friends have to call me a doctor haha.

    Thank you for the great video! I'm now considering on I/O psychology, and may I ask you several questions? Do you think I/O psychology would be a great skills to have as future entrepreneur? Also, I know some I/O psychology graduates work as consultant, but what is the difference between I/O grad becoming a consultant and famous or successful businessman being a consultant?

    Thank you so much for this video. I am undergraduate majoring General Psychology who is interested in both I/O (70%) and clinical psychology. This is one of main question I had, the difference of having master and phd. Can you be hired as consultant or i/o psychologist at various company as master graduate? Also, Which city is good for job demand for I.O? I feel like clinical at least, New York and California... (I am currently attending city college in NYC) but for the graduate program I wanted to move to different states, but of course, the decision aligning with job availability. If you can share knowledge, I would really appreciate it. I am currently hospitalized in back home south Korea because of covid19 positive case. I have been isolated here for 20 days waiting to get negative result..then with lots of time in my hand, I am researching about my next education move and I really find your channel helpful, It gives me look through future and hope! Keep up with good work and stay safe xx

    I graduated Bs Medical lab science, is it important that I have a Psych degree, then do masters in I/O psych? Or will you recommend me to just go straight to masters in i/o psych? Also if I'll do masters in I/O psych, can i do counseling? I kinda want to do that before jumping to phd too.
    Plsss replyyy. I love your video!

    Right now I am beginning to look at different graduate programs. If I were to pursue a PhD over a Master's degree, would that close any doors in regard to working in a practical setting, or would it mostly just open more doors for my career? Thank you!

    • @TheIOSoapbox
      @TheIOSoapbox  Před 4 lety +1

      Great question! Generally, the PhD will give you some breadth but of course it depends on many factors. One thing I would say is that sometimes, we PhDs can be considered "nerds" or antisocial (a different kind of stereotype at work here) and sometimes you have to combat those more social biases.

    Do you need a master's in order to obtain a PhD?? I'm planning on returning to school for a bachelor's in I/O psychology but want a master's in a different business field (business management) and then consider getting a PhD in I/O Psychology. My end goal is to be an educator and thinking about the route I should take

    Dying to know - can you not just start with a masters and work your way up to a PHD? Or do PHD programs not often admit masters students?

  • @evandaldin3774
    @evandaldin3774 Před 4 lety +2

    Is it necessary to do both? I’ve heard going to a masters program then a PhD program is preferred.

    • @TheIOSoapbox
      @TheIOSoapbox  Před 4 lety

      Preferred for what is always the question. Certainly some PhD programs require a Master's degree first - the major question will always be: is there a job you want that you can't get without that degree?

    Hello I have a master's in mental health counseling with a certificate in vocational evaluation and work adjustment & I'm considering getting a certificate in I/O... what kind of mobility would that give me

    • @TheIOSoapbox
      @TheIOSoapbox  Před 4 lety +1

      Depends! (Classic IO answer) - it may give you more tools and skills that help you move. Have you seen jobs that require a certificate in IO? When it comes to graduate work, I always recommend that you only pursue a graduate degree if there are jobs you cannot get without that degree (if you're paying for it). If your organization pays for it, that's a bit of a different story.

    Hello doctor, quick question: does one need to complete a masters before a Ph.D? Or can an undergraduate attend a Ph.D program after graduating from their bachelors?

    • @TheIOSoapbox
      @TheIOSoapbox  Před 4 lety

      No doctor needed! That's going to depend on the program - I'd recommend looking into some of the PhD programs you might be interested in and doing some research into the kinds of students they admit and what their backgrounds are. Some do take (and some prefer) folks coming right our of undergraduate, others prefer (or require!) a Master's degree first, others may look for relevant work experience. PhD programs vary widely - what do the ones you are excited about require?

      @@TheIOSoapbox Thank you so much for the information! :) I am currently searching for research based programs! How would I know which Ph.D programs require a master's first and which one's do not?

    • @TheIOSoapbox
      @TheIOSoapbox  Před 4 lety

      @@ramilbalde1153 this is going to be a laborious process - first check the siop website listing of graduate programs to see if they have that information. If not, you may need to go to each programs website and look at their requirements. If it is not listed on their website, you may need to ask their contact person

      Hi! Have you had the chance to watch our other videos, including Careers in IO, and parts 2 and 3 of this specific series (Masters or PhD or Work Experience)? We do go over paths into IO straight from undergraduate, as well as work experience in IO without a graduate degree. I do find a lot of students in my program have been practicing IO and IO related work for awhile, and come back to school to develop a standard set of tools to up their game at their work :)
