    Boavista is one of the best neighbourhoods in Porto, well connected to city center and to the main highways. Basically is mid-way between the ocean and city center. Please bear in mind that this district is quite big and it is possible to find also the differences poor-rich almost living side by side, also there are a lot of high schools and universities.

    This is where I grew up (right next to Rotunda da Boavista, in fact) and I find it very interesting that you feel this district is far from the city. I've always considered it like the city centre, and you don't need a car to live here. Almost all metro lines come through here and practically all bus lines come through here as well. Now if you go more towards Foz, then you may need a car, but that's not really considered Boavista anymore (despite the Avenue bearing the name being right there).
    I wish I could afford living in Boavista (one day, one day...), but it has become very expensive in the past two decades and a lot of people who grew up there were practically forced to move elsewhere when they left their parents' homes (like me) because housing prices are mostly prohibitive.

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for sharing, Alexandra. We definitely get what you mean. Let's be honest, anything someone needs for city life is in Boavista. It's also definitely the center if you're talking about in the middle of Foz and the historic downtown. - Josh & Kalie

    • @Blisolda
      @Blisolda Před 3 lety +1

      @@ExpatsEverywhere Yes, that's it, but also the fact that from Boavista you have direct access to all roads and streets that take you to other parts of the city and away from it both north and south. In my mind the centre is Boavista, Cedofeita and Baixa. But this is my view, other people may have different views of it. And I honestly thought it curious that in your view as non-natives you see Boavista as far from the city. I wasn't criticizing you just genuinely finding it curious because it's a different point of view! And for me, from my very biased point of view, it's the best place in Porto! :)

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  Před 3 lety

      @@Blisolda We didn’t take it at criticism. A lot of the expats that have come in recent times and are coming aren’t moving to Porto with a local job so the business district isn’t the center like it would be to others in our opinion. Aliados has a real center type feel to it with the government house being there. Also, have a car completely changed a person’s experience of a neighborhood and city. Walking in certain areas might be really nice and comfortable and for cars/drivers be a pain and then the opposite can happen in a different part of a city. The Boavista neighborhood would be great to have a car and drive around in, right?

    • @Blisolda
      @Blisolda Před 3 lety +1

      @@ExpatsEverywhere well, I only drive in Boavista if I'm driving through it, otherwise I walk. When I lived there I would walk everywhere or take the bus (the metro came later), so that's not really my experience. Where I live (close to the city park) I cannot dispense with the car, sadly. But from Boavista I would walk even to Baixa when I had the time. To places further away, there are buses, as most bus lines either start in Boavista or come through Boavista. Then, if you want to drive away from Porto this is really the only place in the city where you have direct access to all major roads that travel north and south. The only transport you don't have direct access to now from Boavista is the train.

Seriously, walking so much of Boavista, we learned a lot about it and before doing this we probably would have listed it at 3, but we've seen enough to be convinced of why so many locals look to Boavista as a place to be. East of the rotunda certainly could use some renovations. There are several spots that are good, but if renovations could continue to leak out from those spots, it would be good. I meant my shop is in the rotunda and your final assessment is correct, Boavista is also a 4 for me, in some areas a 5- avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, that runs into Boavista, the area comprised between the old Sheraton and the Botanical gardens you visited is also a 4.5, but some areas are 2 or 3 due to some poor social buildings.I'm living currently in Foz(which i think is a bit overrated) and i used to take the bus to work,it's a nice ride, but at midtrip you will find social neighbourhoods near Fluvial, which has El Corte Ingles,Mercadona, Lidl ,Burger king, but at the back of those supermarkets there is a dr%g market and is not at all recommended to visit.
      That being said about the west part ,which i agree it seems nicer than the east one, if you exclude downtown, Ribeira, Avenida dos Aliados, the east part has also Antas which is a solid 4, and the Dragão stadium (my club stadium FC Porto), but to be totally honest i would not live in the east part, i like to have both the river and sea nearby.

      Boavista has one of the main metro station "casa da musica" and plenty of buses stop there, to connect the western part of Porto. Also, for one needing (or willing) to have a car, it has good access to main roads and parking spaces, that are not available in the center. It's better for working people rather than tourists. The modern building design was intended from the begining, as opposed to the centuries old city center. Take a look at "Casa de Serralves" it was built in the 30's and is considered one of the major Art Deco works in Porto. Plenty of mid century modern can be found, as the market "Bonsucesso" like you said. Cheers!
