Grew up there in the 80s...man, what a time and what a city. Moving back in 2 yrs.
Thanks for the pleasant memories! I lived in Wichita a few months last year for an extended travel nursing assignment @ St. Joes Hospital Great little town; good barbecue and wonderful people. Ill be back!
My Dad's old body shop is at 14:43 on the l/h side...white bldg with white SUV OUT front.....had to paint it in 1972....don't remember how many 5 gallons of white paint it took..Sucked paint like a sponge.
My hometown, haven't live there in over 25 years
I hear you. My hometown too. Haven't lived there in over fifty years
Well, the Orpheum's still there, but so much of the downtown I remember is gone. The old Miller Theatre is a parking garage. The department store buildings along Douglas remain, but the stores are gone. The Broadview Hotel is still there, as is the Santa Fe train station. They were just starting on the Century II arena when I left, replacing the old Forum and since replaced itself. Broadway and Douglas were the center of town; Broadway was US 81 and Kellogg 54, and just starting to become a freeway.
Hey Mike traffic looks easy breezy. Wide streets, that look in relatively good shape, with parking. All unheard of here in south Fla.
I love the drives in witchita definitely beats driving in Florida man I miss this
You Are So Wrong. Everything Is Brown And Faded.
I don't know what I expected, but that wasn't it. Very nice city, quite the downtown area.
Kinda the homeless population compared to the size of the down town area is kinda crazy
Don’t waste your time, your better off living in a different state honestly
I love Kansas ❤️
Kind of looked like you were lost driving around in circles, LOL I live in Wichita and glad not many have looked at this video or thumbed it up. Sorry! but Wichita is mostly a nice clean city and we don't have Tent Cities or druggies and drunks sleeping on the sidewalks or pimps and their women on the streets like Philadelphia or LA or Seattle and other cities so its a nice city here and we would like to keep it this way and most people here are fairly nice !
My city. Thanks for coming through
I miss Wichita
This was fun. I grew up in Wichita and currently live here. I think I have driven on all of the streets at some time. The last street was NOT N Main, but N. Waco.
Kind of cool. Like really being there when you can’t be there. I still want to cruise there sometime on my red KZ1000 restomod. (Guess I would have to trailer it up there from Arkansas.) Would really be neat to cruise Douglas at night with a few KZ‘s like we used to do back in spring summer and fall of 1979-1980. Maybe park in a row for a few minutes in front of wherever the Oyster Bar used to be on Douglas. I think it was across from the Beacon Café but I am not sure. This was before the creation of Old Town, when it was still a run down warehouse district. I believe this was the first restaurant there, and even pre-dated Gary Strepy's Pasta Mill by a decade. A few of us did that and got ran off by the cops after the owner of the restaurant complained. He told us to leave. We didn't. The cops came. They told us to leave. We protested stating that there was no law that we were violating. They politely but firmly insisted. We left. But we came back... I was on my luminous green 78 A1A with a friend on a Z1R. I didn't know how magic those memories would be then...
At 18 05 there is the former location of the "Looking Glass"private club where I worked as a teen I was 17 and the College girls were 21 and they spent their free time teasing me about my age .They would say things like "It is such a pity that you are too young for me" and I would say "I wont brag to my friends ,don`t worry I can keep a secret". I was happy every minute even though I was at work. I wish I could go back in time to 1977 . Just think all of those girls are Grandmothers on Social Security by now and I could be on SS too if I wanted to be.
What’s up with the pedestrian at 11:03? He walked into view from the right in-between the trash can and the crosswalk signal but if u look closely, he emerges as a ghost or spectre then materializes as it/he crosses the street!!! Am I trippin’???
Probably a meth head or homeless person
We don't speak of him. We don't EVER speak of him
Tis true.

The section is edited to remove the wait. You can see the transition from red to green at the same time the guy fades in. You can also see the guy walking back at the last cross walk.
I left Wichita January 1970 a week after I graduated and before I turned 18. I have not been back although I would have wanted to but my jobs kept me away. I can't say the best years of growing up were there but they were great. The best memories were working at Joyland and dragging Douglas after the park closed on Friday nights. I have traveled around this country a lot but I will always remember my high schooldays at Wichita High School South.
Joyland is gone now. :(
Nice tour of Wichita KS
316 ‼️🌻
My case manager and I drove the Murdock route down town weekly.😢😅
Recommend a Ziggy's Pizza while you're there!
A city of cars - no people. Where are the people?
It brings to mind the risk I felt, 40 yrs ago, when after a brief visit to Europe I wanted to emulate their lifestyle. By this video I see my self-consciousness as a pedestrian was not misplaced.
Driving way north on market street at the end doesn't make a damn bit of sense.
Doesn’t look very bicycle friendly.
It’s my dream to get in by a car in Kansas.
I can’t think of a better place than Wichita.
Michigan is pretty dope though.
It didn’t seem to bad honestly. There looked like some nice paths that lead into the city all the way out from the suburbs that get into the heart of the city with some really nice paths along the river. Most of the places you’d want to stop in are only a couple blocks from the main bike path and with the relatively mild traffic compared to other cities, there’s less chance you’d have a run in with a car.
Side note: I lived in Michigan for a while. The people in Wichita are much more friendly than (eastern) MI. If you’re the type that doesn’t mind random people talking to you, we found the people there to be very polite and friendly and easy to talk to.
Rarely people bike here in Wichita but I do have a recommendation like Seattle is very bike friendly and the people there are alright they ain’t the best and they aren’t the worst but maybe one day you can go there
If you're a serious bicycler, Kansas is also home to one of the most brutal off-road biking races in the world: Unbound Gravel.
Where are all the stores?? Municipal buildings..??? The typical things you would normally see downtown.
They were all torn down in the 50s through 70s.
Not all, there's a resurgence along Douglas, and espically in old Town, which is an area just east of downtown.
It doesn’t have all that downtown
@@stinkywizzleteets4740 I was there in the 70s and remember a lot more buildings and stores.. This is like the new downtown..
Wichitans don't shop downtown, outside of a few select boutique expeditions. Those stores are concentrated along Douglas, between Hillside and Seneca. Big box stores and other such establishments are located well outside downtown.
The municipal buildings are concentrated in the area of Central and Main, an intersection that this driver failed to navigate (note: the final segment, labeled N. Main, is actually N. Waco). He did, however, pass by the police evidence building, a culinary arts school, The Kansas Health Foundation, and the performing arts center.
I might be mistaken, but Wichita has a mall right?
Yes only 1 active mall witch is town east mall
Nice
I don`t think these are the best parts of Witchita to show ,just looks live every other working part of town in America in the first part of the Video but it gets better later on ,there is another Video of Witchita that just shows the worn down looking parts of town . I like this one because this is more comprehensive .
Most of these youtubers who make videos of cities show the worst parts of the city. I won't watch this guy's videos anymore. This is called Downtown Wichita, but he skirted around the main part if downtown which is very nice.
@@glorias8540 The sky must be falling at all times with these guys.
Born and raise
Looks like you have NO problem running red lights.....BAD, BAD, BAD
Wow talking about a ghost town, this was probably filmed during rush hour traffic..😂
Best advice for new comers to that area, don't go to downtown to hangout and "have fun", it's a setup for shootings and bad people.
2:48, Barbecue spot on the right is new but very rude and unprofessional customer service. Coming from a Kansan.
BBQ restaurant’s aren’t the best in my opinion
Your not from here are you at 35.54 you turned southbound on to waco (NOT) main street lmao
Did you happen to see any linemen? 😂
You have to be over 60 to know the meaning of that.
11:30 Should I stop, or should I go? 🤔
Waste of time,seriously
Decisions, decisions...
I heard Beavis and Butthead... Breaking the law, 🎶🎧🤺breaking the law...🎶🎶....
Go drive around in the 17th and grove area where all the brilliant, productive young scholars live.
That's where you used to get rocks thrown through your window when I was a kid. Haven't been there since 1982.
Good morning bon jour
You're not showing any of the worthwhile parts of the city.
Look at us
Why american city look like farms
Because, unless they're planned, they grow out of farmland.
