  • Five giants of steam preservation would all grace the mainline on Saturday 20th July, with three steam specials passing over the Settle & Carlisle Railway within the space of a few hours, once again the Northern Hills played host to the sights and sounds of steam traction ! There was also two other steam tours across the Welsh Marches Line, proving England was the place to be for mainline steam locomotive action, and in this video all five locos can be seen on their individual trains.
    The day was long and challenging, especially at the start with a heavy downpour of rain, which still managed to played second fiddle to 'Princess Elizabeth as she stormed through the rain up the S&C. Second up was Flying Scotsman which was hauling the Northern Belle dining train and is seen climbing Giggleswick Bank with it's heavy load. After the passing of Scotsman and one hour later it was Tornado's turn over the S&C, and the A1 is seen Blasting it's way towards Ribblesdale ! The final two tours were over the Welsh Marches Line and first we see 'Bahamas' dashing past Onibury in fine style. The final loco of the day, was no other than Britannia, where we see her climbing past Wistanstow with ease on her way back to Crewe.
    A lengthy and challenging day, but it was just about worth it. August will be a quiet month, so we wanted to make an effort for this video. I hope you enjoy the video.

    Stunning video, thanks Liam and Phil, and congratulations on a fantastic achievement in one day. That first sequence of 6201 is a brilliant example of comprehensively overcoming the elements and actually using the conditions to advantage (with no under-estimation of what went into the achievement!). Kind regards, Bob.

    I love the title (and the video) I went to a 'bog standard' comprehensive, and as a 12 year old, I chose a 'Famous Five' book. As I was getting it stamped, the school librarian said, in a very disapproving tone of voice : 'Oh Russell!'[

    Fine stuff ! But as an observation on Diesel support, the two-tone green Brush4 looks great behind Britannia- but an "LT liveried" 20 looks, frankly, ridiculous.

    I've been a steam lover all my life, but what is this insane fascination with Flying Scotsman ??

    • @keithparker5103
      @keithparker5103 Před 5 lety

      The A3s were beautiful engines but I am still inclined to agree with you. I worked for British Railways for over 30 years and travelled many thousands of miles behind steam locomotives. The one locomotive I noticed that gave consistantly high performance was No. 73068 I timed it at 95 MPH many times between Church Fenton and York with 10 vehicles (8coaches and 2 brake composites) I was bitterly disappointed when I learned that engine had not survived the great purge.

    • @paulcaswell2813
      @paulcaswell2813 Před 4 lety

      Scotsman - the only surviving non-streamlined Gresley Pacific; the first passenger locomotive completed for the LNER (only the fourth British Pacific built); first authenticated 'ton'. Scotsman's done it's bit. I admit that 1471 (60112) and 2750 (60096) had wonderful claims to preservation, but tragically Scotsman was the only survivor of a wonderful class.

  • @breeze1472

    Am I right in saying some of those new carriages on the Flying Scotsman are old 125 carriages done out in the Pullman colours? If so very classy

    • @AndreiTupolev

    • @AndreiTupolev
      @AndreiTupolev Před 5 lety

      That's what the diesel hanging on the back of Scotsman's train is for.

    • @Tisnaeme1
      @Tisnaeme1 Před 5 lety

      Yes. It's a pity the original generating system cannot be used today. Towing a diesel loco behind a historic train does spoil the effect a bit.
      Regards.
