Sammy is an enigma. He’s a rock vocalist god. He’ll be pushed out in his wheel chair singing I can’t drive 55. Props to Micheal Anthony and his voice. He’s up there 68 years old also and he’s still a great back up singer

Sammy Hagar is still out there doing his thing after all these years! My favourite solo song of his is I Can't Drive 55, and his work with Van Halen is his best overall because his voice possessed something that DLR's didn't -- crazy range and versatility!

Hagar is one of those guys who really refined his abilities in a lot of ways. He wasn't in Van Halen until his mid-30s, and had some killer performances.
The three times I've seen him, he was older than I am now and had really solid performances.
And yeah, that 'Highway Star' performance is fantastic....

Your voice is nothing less than amazing. It has every last bit of power and punch as it did three or four decades ago. You are living proof that good vocal discipline and daily practice is key to maintaining peak performance throughout the years. The proof really **is** in the singing! Maybe Sammy can't drive 55 but he (and you) can sing your socks off well past 55!

You bring up so really great points---how some singers push their voices more than others, about some having better voices later in life, some of voices going downhill. In the case of yourself you brought up that you feel your voice is better now than when you were younger. Not surprising in your case given how you have talked about how you have over your life learned so much about the voice---and put it to practice. Obviously all the knowledge in the world doesn't help if you don't put it into use. Thanks for looking at Sammy, really good video!

Wait, Sammy isn't trained as a singer?! Damn. I've been a fan of his for years and I just always assumed he'd had vocal training or lessons. Has that been the case throughout his career? Or did he learn how to maintain it? He's up there with Steven Tyler imo for guys who still sound basically the same. It's not just that he still sounds great, he still delivers 110% every performance. Which, I mean, even if you don't nail it 100%, you still feel that extra 110% delivery and its exciting as a fan!

@@l.t.w8985 Might have to check that out! I know bits and pieces of Sammys life stories just based on being a VH fan for years. Honestly, I always kinda preferred Sammy in VH. DLR was a great front man, they also wrote great rock songs with him, but I felt Sammy gave them more options in terms of the music. Maybe Eddie got better at songwriting over time. But the Hagar era felt like a more advanced/accomplished band. + DLR was always hectic live. Forgot words, long rambling rants. That's not to say I don't love the DLR era! They were both phenomenal bands. Just from a purely music based perspective, I feel DLR limited them, while Hagar pushed them past their limits.

For his age and all the years still rocks it. Having Mike from VH he too is still singing well and hey its always great to have someone in your band that can kick it with harmonizing. Hmmm, now Ken, I do know that your cousin has a great eye for his fashion style something else that must run in your family . You wear the greatest shirts. Back in your concerts days you to wore it well. I wish that Sammy could write at least one more hit. I always said Van Halen would of never of lasted or peaked in the heights that they did once Sammy came aboard. If you ask me there had been no greater writers in Van Halen. I guess that's why it was a huge stipulation in the Van Halen contract to each singer they auditioned which again was to write songs . It certainly showed once Gary Cherone joined the group . I always said it had been sad and exstreemly embarrassing how Van Halen brothers actually ended. I also felt bad for Gary I've known him and worked with him for a good 10 yrs and Boston wasn't going to fit well with Halen brothers. Although Eddie did take some fashion tweaks of ours LOL- poor Gary didn't have a chance with those guys. It's never easy joining a band that has started having issues with members and all of the bullcrap that comes with egotistic behavior. I am not afraid to say it as I see it. The money Van Halen made SINCERELY came from Sammy's creative mind . When Sammy first got with the brothers and Mike it was all fun but Sammy did what he had to do and that was wait to become one with the guys and once he did omg that album sored Jump I can still hear that song. Hits kept coming . All that cake wouldn't of been made if it hadn't been for your cousin. I know he has one more huge hit in that heart & mind of his and I'm waiting with many others. There having fun now good for them all. A book that seriously couldn't tell all truths you know it. I got to check out Kayla doing 55 .. Blessings always Ken and all here enjoying your work and everyone who is in the Templin arena...Peace Out!!!✌💜🙏🏻👍😊

Yeah Ken, once again, Im noticing the same comparative nuainces HERE , I did with Elton... The vocal timbre having more DEPTH, (some due to lower key) but the quality is still there. Yeah with Sammy, the NOW clips had the harmony at the same level as He, so it was alittle hard to tell how his notes truly came out, but like you were sayin , "all things considered", He's still KILLIN IT. Yeah Ken, just in the 4 yrs Ive been here, YOUR vocal has more depth now, more refined, full bodied, less strained even, especially on the "vocal dist/overdrive" phrasing's. Your speaking voice has gotten lower as well.😎

..I tend to think Sammy's voice was at it's peak during his Van Halen years..if anything, I think it was at it's peak during the last half of his tenure..from around 1991-1995-6, I think...just listen to just about anything from Unlawful Carnal Knowledge...and "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do" from Balance...or even "Humans Being" from the Twister soundtrack..of course, it doesn't hurt to have Michael Anthony helping you out, too..both then and now :) ..but, as comparison, DLR voice was already about shot by that time period(not that it was ever great to begin with)...not anything to do with Sammy, but I saw a recent live performance of Kenny Loggins online somewhere..amazing!..he really sounded impressive for his age...

I saw Sammy several times as a solo act and just freaked when he joined van Halen. Sammy peaked as a vocalist in van Halen. Very few people could ever scream like Sammy and duplicate the notes Eddie was hitting. Oh, and Rik Emmett was also a rock god and a great rock vocalist in his own right

Awesome stuff, Ken. I learn something every time.
On a personal note, I notice that I don't actually practice SINGING and vocal placement enough- I spend all my time on scale exercises, then go run and take care of life stuff. So basically, I do vocal exercises, then go sing in the band. Then I realized on some songs... that I'm only going to place my voice properly if I actually practice SINGING more at home, and not just scales. That's on me, because Ken's course is spot on. I just got caught up doing the scales and not actually sing at home very much as a PRACTICE tool. I'm balancing that out now. √

I personally think Sammy Hagar being on how old he is, Sammy is still doing great and probably better than ever. He adjusted and adapted to the changes very well, and I’m also thinking it’s living a clean and happy life with as little drama as possible and just doing what you love. It’s the circle ⭕️

In those old days, there were no tutorials how to sing rock. still in the 80s, you went to a library and got yourself books, that only wanted to teach you bell canto.
Helpful maybe, but not a word about some healthy distorted sounds. Instead pages and pages describing a beautiful voice without any word how to actually use it.
at that time singers had to figure it out by themselfes. And they even hit or missed.
Those we still hear about are the survivers.

Hi Ken, would you like to do a video about Marko Hietalla (from early Tarot-times to his latest solo). I think he preserved his voice quiet well. even though he screaming way up in upper registers all the time. One of my inspirational singers next to Michael Kiske and Jorn Lande. God bless you Ken, great contnent, I learn a lot here... Thank you

Thank you again, Ken, and agree on your points. Hagar along with Paul Rogers definitely grew into their voices over time, and this demonstrates of what we can be capable, which your lessons demonstrate. Would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on under what circumstances key changes are advisable and how one can determine this with one’s own singing.

This series is awesome. I love the creative material and series you do, alot of entertainment variety on your channel.
I do have a question, on a few of the singers you have covered, many of them can still sing and have not lost their voice. However some of them sound a little different than they did in their 20s (understandable for sure). Could someone like Joe Elliot (who can definitely still perform at a high level) for example do work on their voice and get to where standard tuning is an option night in and night out again? Where a singer sounds roughly the same in their tone that they did in the late 1980s many years later? Trying to word this as best I can.
    Thanks again Ken!

Sammy is always an awesome, powerhouse singer. Hard to believe his singing voice is still in great shape, while he didn't ever have any formal vocal training. He's now in
his 70's, and he still sounds fantastic
when he sings. He's lucky that his voice never gave out on him. I heard his Deep Purple and Zeppelin covers, and he killed it with his bands, Chicken Foot and The Circle. 🐔 🦶 🔴 Kayla also killed it and crushed it with her Sammy cover.👏🤘

I saw Sammy a few weeks ago down in Pompano Beach so here's my take fresh of the presses. He's still got it with high energy and god has certainly blessed him with success, a great voice, and longevity. He made the best decision to befriend Michael Anthony, who has helped him last this long. It's a bit strange hearing it tuned down at first but it works. He doesn't stray much higher than the mid 4th octave these days and if he pushes hard he instinctively knows if he's going to crack before it happens and stops the note. Again Michael Anthony is a real help here who seems to have a near limitless range. See The Circle while you still can. The worst part of going for me is seeing how old we all got. I used to hang with young people in the parking lot playing music before the show, and now I'm hanging with grandpa. Bummer.

Man, I'll never forget the first time I heard Montrose!
A friend had just got the 8-track and put it in his Craig Powerplay..( yes, I'm that old). That album blew me away! Instant Sammy fan! And I've followed him ever since. And I agree that some of his best stuff was with Van Halen. The clip of them in Eddie's studio doing Won't Get Fooled Again was pretty cool ( except for the horrible video).
