live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia 04/20/1998 featuring Gary Cherone (ex Extreme) on vocals - Hudba
I saw them on this tour and Cherone was fantastic, he can actually sing. Notice he also knows the lyrics....
Well played! 😁
1:02 Finally Unchained with the Intro! Eddie sounds great like the rest of the band.
Cherone is a Boss
Eddie's guitar, mike's bass, alex's drums...makes me come back to this vid over and over again. Their sound is epic here.
Holy shit how did they not release this concert? Fuckin' great stuff, man. Gary got such a bad wrap, but he could do the gig. And look at Eddie. You could tell he missed playing some of the DLR era riffs. He's enjoying the Hell out of himself.
Mike Anthony's bass playing sounds phenomenal in that performance.
MA is a bad ass!... he keeps it together so insanely perfect..
such a killer lineup. was never destined to last but the diversity in the setlist made these shows insane. eddie's guitar sound was perfect and they were playing with a drive they hadn't seen in years. i personally liked cherone's stage presence, these concerts are a lot of fun to watch.
It was fucking awful ! So hard to watch
Michael Anthony is a beast at playing bass! timing, singing and deep depth!
Thank God for Michael Anthony! he is without a doubt the glue of that band.
Criminally underrated. Not fancy playing but locked into the groove. His high vocals made the whole thing special. I think the drumming community is finally starting to recognize how Alex was one of the great rock players ever.
Was at the Perth leg of this tour and it was so emotional for lots of us long time fans. I saw a big Kiwi guy in front of me tears streaming down his face at the relief/joy of witnessing this gig. I can say it was unforgettable and Gary can be proud of his contribution too.
Jesus, Eddie is a national freaking treasure.
I saw this live. It was in Melbourne. A great night.
Cherone was so on point and relished every moment and should of stayed in Van Halen. He neighbour the best in Eddie...
RIP Eddie
This is the best sounding live version I have yet to hear. Intense and aggressive
Debio ser un album Live
Oakland 1981 is far superior but this is great for sure
I was at that concert. April 20, 1998, Sydney Entertainment Centre. They opened with Unchained, and blew us away. The Gary Cherone/Van Halen era does not get enough credit, and Gary probably brought in a new sense of being, because that night, Van Halen were tight as. Thanks for posting.
I don’t care who sang with VH as long as Michael Anthony was singing backup.
So true my friend, so true... Michael Anthony is the best VH singer ever.
No. Read RUNNIN WITH THE DEVIL ......you might think differently about the brothers . Poor Mike
Yes sir! Mike is a monster, his harmonies are top notch,
💯
Right on! It isn't van Halen without Michael Anthony. Bet. 😅
Out of all the songs done in that concert....this is the best! You can hear everyone singing good harmonies. That energy on the stage...yah baby!
Van Halen Opened The Show in Brissy in 1998 with Unchained and it was Explosive....Gary Cherone was a Live-Wire on-stage and really blasted-out the Songs.......Alex & Mikey were Pumpin' the Rhythms like Crazy and Eddie was AMAZING, even being Lead Singer on one of the songs, which was Gr8....One of Their BEST Concert Tours, I'd say...Cheers from Damo.
The video doesn't quite capture the power and volume from that concert.
A wall of sound from the opening riff.
@@lozpower1790 Yep, they were AWESOME!!!!
I would have no problem with VH bringing back Cherone, he absolutely kills the DLR era songs. Underrated and undrerappreciated without a doubt.
@@danielamarillas4488 You´re wrong, he´s stil got serious pipes!!
@@danielamarillas4488 Extreme is putting a new album soon, with Gary singing as usual.
Eddie the greatest of all time hands fuckin down. But this tour here he was possessed. His playing absolutely obliterates any other guitar player EVER. His rhythm to lead and precision plus thr feel is devastating
Eddie’s tone here is sick!! Saw them on this tour . Gary’s singing and Eddie’s playing was a great match. Mike and Alex weren’t to shabby also . RIP THE KING!!
Sounds so good. Gary Cherone rocks.
Cherone is killing it in this live show!!! He got a bad wrap. I'm impressed.
Wow, that harmonized vocals... R.I.P guitar god EVH
Cherone killing it on the vocals, Eddie's guitar are on another level....Love the loud mix..
This tour rocked!!!!
I was in the second row in front of Eddie that night!!! Rocked it!!!
Gary is out his mind..Had no idea---the most insane energetic singer of all time
Bands go through line up changes all the time. One of the most memorable nights of my life when I got to see Van Halen playing live in Adelaide. I like Van Halen III, and every album and song. They did an amazing demo with Mitch Malloy too, could've been another hit single and possibly a hit album.
this was a great tour, I had NO complaints with it
Love ur cover of fire in the hole ✊
@@SafelandingRecords thanks pal
As much as I despise the VH3 album, Cherone does the old songs justice.
That's their best album.
@@sirkayda7205 That is a bit of a stretch my friend I like it too, but seriously . . . .
Gary is amazing as is Ed here
EVH's tone really is spectacular, just unreal.
Wow Eddie sounds great and love the jumps..Love Gary in the band ! 10/10
A presença de palco do Gary cherone é fantástica!!!
Cherone fuckin' rocks!!
Right ... I saw them in Pittsburgh ... they rocked. Gary's voice was good ... much better than Dave's, then and especially now.
The best part about Gary in van halen, he didn't have a giant ego! He would sing anything from any albums, roth or hagar era. Van halen should have kept Gary, he blew sammy and Dave away!! R.I.P eddie! ❤️
I'm not sure about blowing them away but he was a great singer and was the perfect guy to fill the void while the brothers were being children...
Sammy is just a screamer, pitchy as hell all the time. david lee can't remember words most of the time and totally screws up the dynamics of the song by not hitting his marks.
Gary always hit his marks, and can sing on pitch, he made the songs flow like they were written. huge difference when your paying $$$ for a CD vs paying huge $$$ ticket for a half-ass shit show.
@@thomaspartin191 perfectly described
Anyone could blow Dave away. He's a terrible singer.
Agree with many of the comments here: Gary really fits in here, what a delivery!
(wanted to write 'delivery' initially, and it's that as well!)
I agree with all the positive remarks about Cherone . He kicked ass on the Roth era . And was the best singer of the three .
Melhor q o Sammy hagar nunca
Gary nails this song.
This shit sounded good!
all over...
VH were over 20 years into their career at this point and Eddie was still better than every single one of us. Sure there were guitarists who could play faster and were more “technical” but Eddie was one with that instrument like no one else except Hendrix.
I miss Gary. Sure, VHIII wasn't well received, but it still sold 500,00 copies, which is much better than what Van Halen is doing now with Dave. I still liked the album. It was just different than what the band had done before. The tour for Van Halen III ROCKED! Why? Because they really delved into their musical catalog. I credit Gary for that one. The guy really could sing.
Well of course they sold better back then because Internet piracy wasn't destroying the music biz back then
The old VH fans wanted meat and potatoes while Gary was dishing up seared salmon with a dill sauce. He was bloody good on that tour and VH3 is no where near as bad as people make out
@@kiwizeppelin - It's my favorite VH album.
The tour was such a successful
@@sirkayda7205 let’s not go crazy here
Amazing sound and performance. This was a very dark time for Eddie but he always brought the heat. Miss you Ed.
Damn, cherone sounds good here.
Caught this tour at Alpine Valley-they opened with this. There was some trouble getting to the first verse because Eddie was chasing Gary around the drum riser for like 7 laps. Gary Eddie and Mike collapsed on the riser in a pile when the song ended.
Shame you stood me up Shirley. You missed a great show 😝
I saw them in Philly with this lineup. Eddie's playing and sound is right on very clean near perfect. This may be the best sounding Eddie live I've heard. I did hear him jam on an outdoor stage in Atlantic City at one of the casinos years ago where he just went off
This is the first time in all of these years I even bothered to check out any of these VH vids with Gary Cherone as I kind of lost interest after DLR and then even Sammy Hagar. Have to say that for those criticizing Gary Cherone, well you're entitled to your opinions. I didn't expect a carbon copy of DLR but was pretty impressed with the amount of energy and enthusiasm Gary had singing these old classic VH tunes. Furthermore, is Eddie's playing off the hook or what?!? Holy Shit!! That guitar playing was like a fire breathing dragon burning down everything in its path. Can see that he was playing the Peavey Wolfgang in this vid but what amp's and effects was he using on this tour-anybody know?? Eddie's guitar tone and playing was absolutely fucking killer!! Don't think i've ever heard it sounding better than this. This had to have been the Peavey 5150 heads all the way I'm guessing.
Guitar Gear yeah, man, I agree! I have the original Peavey 5150 and it really is a beast. I have one of the newer Wolfgang guitars as well. It gets you there if you want VH guitar tone. And Gary did a hell of a job live. He can cover all 3 eras really well.
it's April 2019 and this is the first time for me.
The real stuff is backstage.
Extreme are a kick ass band and I've met Nuno. Super cool dude. Gary is a phenomenal front man and I saw them on this tour and Gary was amazing!! Too bad he bowed out cuz I think their second studio attempt would have been a huge success. Half of VH111 is great and other half wtf? Saw Extreme again post his VH run in a small venue and Gary fucking slayed it.
I would’ve died if one of them said “Come on Gary gimme a break!”
my all time fav classic rock riff
Having seen and loved Van Halen with Dave, Sammy, and Gary playin' frontman, I'd have to say this 98' tour was definately the best one, hands down! Although nobody can replace the awesome material Roth and Hagar wrote with VH, these shows with Gary sounded amazing! Eddie's sound was at its best imho.
Sounds good to me.
Cheronne is an underrated Boss.
RIP, EVH 😔
VH 3was a great album and tour.
RIP Eddie Van Halen - 06 Oct 2020. I saw them on this tour at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. The mix wasn't great where I sat (on the left stands, facing the stage, opposite to Ed), but I still enjoyed the concert. I liked Gary's singing (I listen to EXTREME too).
I was at the Brisbane show too. It was my dream come true to see them live finally. Today is the worst
@@telarr9164 It is a sad, the passing a guitar legend. It was a dream come true for me to go to that concert too. I also drove to Sydney to see them at ANZ Stadium (the STONE Music Festival") in 2013 with DLR singing. I was right in front of the stage, THAT concert was really a dream come true.
@@DCS21O562 I would have loved to go to that Sydney show but just couldn't make it down there at the time. A missed opportunity. I bet it was a great show!!!!
that guitar is wild & crazy!
Cherone is an amazing vocalist!
awesome ! thank you !
Love the neck collar!
good front man .never new this , im impressed
Gary is the only one who can sing the other two singers' stuff well.
Cherone sings all 3, hagar sings DLR and himself.....DLR sings.....well...he sings himself..........
Thank God he was only around for a short time. Van Halen is Dave,Micheal,Ed and Alex. Anything else, is something else.
So you're here watching a video you wish couldn't exist?
That makes sense. lolz
Nope. Nope. Nope.
Or Mike 😁
Michael Anthony Outstanding Bassist!!!!! Passionate musician!!
Eddie was the only celebrity figure I ever cried over when he passed! Damn I miss that dude!! 🤘😝🎸🎶🎶🎶=\//-/=
I have watched a few vids from this concert, and I thought they should have stuck with Gary. He can sing songs from both previous eras very well. I didn't think it was necessary for him to dress business casual to a rock show, and bounce around, but he was really good.
This is really good I have never seen this at all before. I left VH after OU812
damn..i love eddies tone. pure block letter head 5150
Mikey better be back for the 40th!!!! Its only right, and only fair for us die hards
The mighty वान हालेन
I don't care what anyone says, this was the best version of Van Halen since the 1970's!
Saw this, stunning ... everything sounds spit on
Spot on 😂
Poor dude didnt get a fair shake. He is awesome!
Wow. Lead vox even better sung than with Roth. Cherone did his own thing but stayed on track which is more enjoyable to listen to and sing along to as a fan.
With Roth it's a bit unpredictable how he's gonna sing it. He nailed Mean Streets as well!
....that guitar tone.....
Everybody Up!
A lot of people hate the Gary era and I don’t understand why! Dude has vocal chops and brings an awesome element to an awesome band. God knows he’s a better live singer than Diamond Dave. Dave’s a hell of a showman, he just can’t sing.
for me, it was because i didn't like Extreme's music too much other than a 2-3 songs and it kinda transferred over.
The VHIII album was a debacle, but Gary Cherone with VH live was really impressive.
Van Halen 3 was 100 percent Eddie's album, the album wasn't about "hit" songs or album sales.
Eddie wanted to do something that was his ow, maybe even a concept album. Gary was just a hired gun, and did the job great.
idk why people hate him? hes was actually good. he wasnt david or sammy but still pretty good
Cherone looks fly af in that suit
One of Eddies Masterpieces. 👍
Rip Eddie
Sensacional 🇧🇷
Incrível né mano Eddie era um monstro tocando, evh pra sempre, 👍😎🤟
Mikey's bass cuts through so good
Acually i got goosebumps from this
Van Halen had its kneecaps smashed in when they kicked out Michael Anthony. Such a crucial element of the band’s greatest songs.
this proves Gary Cherone had a lot of potential with this band. If they didn't do Van Halen III and did something actually on par with both Sammy and Roth's eras, this band would've flew into the stratosphere again. But it was not to be, I guess. Still wonder what they could've pulled off had they continued with him though. Of all singers this band has had, Cherone was like the best of both worlds, he could sing songs of both eras whereas the other two were better at one over the other.
Live this really has a heavy chug. Sounds great
fuck they were hot for a live band with Gary.....
Best version of Unchained. Cherone's vocals rock and this is the best guitar tone from Eddie
+DividingFace I think Cherone can sing, but he just doesn't look right with this band, Tough place for him to be, following up on two iconic rockers.
Certainly can agree to that, but as far as tones and tightness of the band all together, this is the best I've heard.
@@EvilEyeGypsy I could close my eyes and enjoy a VH show w Cherone. He does the old school material justice even more than Dave. I can never figure out why Roth REFUSES to just follow the records. Gary does that and is still able to give the vocal parts a fresh twist all at the same time
Cherone deserved more credit than he got !!! He was on fire here !!!
This is really killer... If you can't see Cherone prancing, dancing and posing like a fool...
Unlike Dave being classy and well composed onstage? Give me an F’ing break. Gary was/is a killer singer and fantastic performer. He sang Dave’s songs a hundred times better than Dave live, while still putting on a show. 🤷♂️
So ironic that this was all wrong, yet they sound as good as ever and doin the real van halen material!!
Yet, at the same time, he was the perfect guy for the job. If he wasn't such an ideal foil to Eddie and the gang, it would never have worked as well as it did.
VH SOUNDED GREAT.....
35 dislikes for the king?!
Poor kids...
RIP EVH.
After seeing this I actually like Gary good singer
As for Gary, or any other replacement vocalist, it is NOT about singing as the original (Unless in obvious imitation...) Gary did very good; whether one likes it or not.
#RestInPower EVH
DLR dislikes this!! Outstanding!!!
Imagine 1967 instead of 1978 for both Van Halen Brothers....
I dig the DLR line up of Van Halen - but in many ways Gary Cherone was the strongest singer VH has ever had.
Are you on crack?
Gary Cherone is such a great performer and singer, this line up should have really caught fire. I guess the LP didn't do so good, and the timing was off since everything was going in a different direction in the 90s
