In this video, I talk about the growing trend of movie popcorn buckets as collectibles.
It all started back in 2019 when AMC and Disney released an R2-D2 popcorn bucket with a drink holder for the release of the Star Wars movie The Rise of Skywalker.
This kicked off a phenomenon where many movies are now releasing limited edition, branded popcorn buckets that can cost $25 to $50 empty. These "vessels" have become a lucrative side business for cinemas, third-party vendors, and studios who get licensing fees. Examples include buckets for Fast X, Guardians of the Galaxy, Taylor Swift, Thor, Ghostbusters, Top Gun: Maverick, Willy Wonka, Barbie, Kung Fu Panda, Disney's Toy Story and Cars, Scream, and Dune.
These collectible popcorn buckets are often sold out at theaters and can be found resold online for high prices, sometimes even before the movie's release. It's just another way for movie studios and theaters to squeeze more money out of moviegoers, on top of the already steep prices for tickets, snacks, and drinks.
