  • Well we added sheep to our already diversified life!
    The economics behind the sheep look fantastic and a deal came up where these sheep were for sale and the number of them came out nice to fit at the one farm I rent. A few started lambing right on the truck and once they got off their mothering ability is spectacular!!

    They look pretty fleshy. Can't wait to see the volume of animals after the lambs come. Hopefully they will be born before the wet soggy weather comes. I'm guessing there will be some adaptive planning in the future. Have a wonderful day Jordan.

      Thanks George! Yep we’re already being adaptive with the water hauling we’re doing. It’s nice to have flexibility! Have a good one George!

    You buy sheep by the semi load and netting by the pallet! Fearless! Nice looking ewes too. You’ll like that bale unroller, I did a lot of unrolling bales by hand and when we got the unroller, it made a world of difference.

      It’ll be fun! We’re excited to see how the year goes! Super happy how well the mothers took their lambs after they got off the trailer.

    Hi, I just wanted to let you know from my experience lambimg in January thru march, if the babies can get thru 48 hours, no worries, they are good to go. Mom cleans them off and they are full of milk into the night, you will have hardy babies, good luck

    Wow impressive! This makes me feel like there is no reason I shouldn't get goats. Hope lambing goes well. How are coming all together? I lost count.

      Just got the last load last night in the dark. Wanted to get em unloaded before the snow came. I’m going to try to get over to the sheep as quick as I can to get em dry bedding and hay to eat.

    Hi Jordan, It is amazing that they fit so many Sheep on one stock Trailer. I guess there are several layers and compartments. Hopefully the Sheep will work out as well as the Goats have. Are you going to put some of the Guardian dogs or Donkeys in with the sheep for protection?

    • @WholesomeFamilyFarms
      @WholesomeFamilyFarms  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah I was surprised too. This trailer is mainly for cattle but he hauls sheep like this all the time. When I got my goats that trailer was a 4 deck trailer and could hold a lot more. I plan to take about half my dogs and put them with the sheep.

      @@WholesomeFamilyFarms Having the extra puppies will work out well so you have enough for both herds.

      @@WholesomeFamilyFarms you’ll do GREAT!! remember some of the guard dogs that are bonded with the goats may not like the sheep. Keep an eye on them early. I know you guys will do GREAT!!!!!

    Right on. That bale unroller looks nice. Just sent out 90 lb goat kids yesterday to a sale. $3.75 a lb. Those sheep will do well with the goats. We used to run sheep with goats for a lot of years. Cut the waste out of the goats a lot. They cleaned up the coarser stuff better. My brother runs 300 ewes now, we just run 40 Nanny’s and a couple hundred beef cows.

    What’s the plan with them? I thought I was staying in touch but the sheep news was new to me.
    Will you keep them all year - along with the cattle?

    • @WholesomeFamilyFarms
      @WholesomeFamilyFarms  Před 4 měsíci

      Yep the sheep are here to stay. Going to lamb them out and sell ewe lambs to other people looking to get started and sell ram lambs to the sale barn besides the ones needed for breeding and such. Have a great day!

    Congratulations on the sheep what breed Katahdins? Sheep do pretty good in netting but u will get tired of moving it, i have been using netting for 2 years i have finally built my flock to 115 ewes and am so tired of moving the netting, im trying very hard to get them trained to poly wire instead, i will say i have lost a few lambs this year in the netting with the big squares like you have, just letting you know it might be something you have to watch out for. I like you water hauling setup.

    • @WholesomeFamilyFarms
      @WholesomeFamilyFarms  Před 4 měsíci +1

      They are Katahdin/Dorper crosses. Our long term plan is to get them broke to single wire polywire too but we have ALOT of perimeter fencing to do so we are using netting for now. Ya the water hauling is simple we just need a few more tubs for drinking space but having us being able to be adaptable gives us a lot more options.

    • @406regen
      @406regen Před 4 měsíci

      @WholesomeFamilyFarms I'm surprised you could find that many for sale in one spot, I'm in the same boat using netting until I can build my perimeter fencing I wish you the best on lambing I don't understand why people breed there animals to lamb in WY or Montana in the middle of winter. I have only had my flock 2 years but if you have any questions feel free to ask my youube channel is 406regen and I'm based in Central Montana

    Kudzu Pueraria Montana excellent browsing feed crop. Graze regularly. To control invasion.

      I have not researched the subject. Yet. Nutritoanal value. Frost-hardyness, and and. But. With many browsers such as you have. Establishing a small section which of any invasion can be dealt with in good time is worth giving some thought.
      I'm 10,000 miles off. And what I have seen in videos thus far is that Kudzu is a serious grower. Also creeper. And will overpower/cut off sunlight from trees.
      The present reverse side of my coin is that you presently/in winter, have fallen leaves/oak leaves as stockpile fodder matter.
      I would honestly appreciate comment from people that know a lot more about the subject? Thanks.
