Very helpful video thank you very much. Just did this today (12/31/18) by myself on the floor inside my works shop. Took me about 2 hours to do. Used a floor jack to lift it up to the truck.

Thanks for the video! Did the install with a buddy yesterday and this was very helpful to knowing the steps and familiarize us with the locations of everything. FWIW, my 2006 also has a two piece metal shield as David 306 described. I only had to remove the outermost bolt, then loosen - but not completely remove - the inner/upper bolt to rotate the shield out of the way enough to get to the wiring harness bracket bolts for removal.
I'll mention that it's definitely possible to install the hitch without removing the exhaust hangar if, like me, you do not own the exhaust hangar tools seen in the video. A helper to push the tailpipe inward an inch or two (while still attached to the hangar) allows for easy access to the two big rear bolts on the passenger side. Someone with long fingers and good dexterity can get the two front bolts started by hand and more than enough torque on them with a box end wrench.
Off-road use only; at your own risk; etc.

This is an excellent hitch installation video that also applies to the GX460. Suggest that you also search for the Lexus hitch instructions as your prep for the install. I drove the Lexus rear wheels up on three stacked 2x4 blocks to gain enough height to access the undercarriage. Then I balanced the the Lexus hitch on a 4’ 2x4 mounted on the floor jack pad. You balance the with hand and gently jack up the hitch to meet the frame. Suggest that you fit and hand tighten the big bolts first. Then follow the video instructions. Torque on the smaller (4) M8 bolts is about 18 ft/lbs. (40 ft/lbs was to high in my judgement). This Lexus hitch is well engineered product that perfectly matches the GX460 capabilities. All the Best!

Once you get a nice impact gun like that they may not be necessary for everything but sure cannot be avoided 😂

Thank you for making this video!
When I checked the fitment for my 2004 GX470 from Lexus of Steven's Creek it said I needed this hitch: Tow Hitch - Lexus (PT228-60440)
    2003-2004 Lexus GX470
Do you know what the difference is, your video says the 60540 works for the 2004?

Thank you for the video, I used it to install a trailer hitch on my 2007 GX470. Just some minor differences, the sheet metal shield on my 2007 is a two piece, I only had to remove the driver side shield. It was also easier to install the hitch after dropping the spare and since I was installing the hitch by myself, I installed two of the bolts into the center plate to slide the hitch temporarily in place (used a 24-inch zip tie as a safety).

Thanks for making the video. I just did this job with your help. A big difference in my factory hitch instructions says the larger bolts only get torqued to 60ftlbs *or 80nm not 60 then 80ftlbs. Other than that discrepancy great video.

I have the curt 13445. It does not have the spacers and the bolt holes for tying the hitch to the bumper cross member. Given this missing support in the Curt, I suppose the factory hitch has higher capability on tongue weight. I did tap out all the threads of the bolt holes because 6 of the 8 have been open to the elements for so long - but tapping threads is a difficult job M12x1.25 and the M8x1.25 bolts. The four under the exhaust are particularly difficult to tap. Cutting oil was useful. Anyway, I was here trying to figure out what to do with the electrical connection if it is in the way of the receiver install. Since the Curt and the distributed factory receiver look similar, I assume it is and needs to be relocated. Funny Curt does not mention anything about electrical in its instructions. I must say, you made this job look easy.

Great video...thank you. Is there any mechanical reason one should use a lift or jack and jack stands to install the bumper. Is it merely to give you room to work? Unfortunately I don't have a lift and had planned to back GX460 up onto a car ramp ( usually used to work under my car). Any reason this not a good way to go?

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  Před 4 lety +1

Questtt3 Yes just to get a little extra room under there if you can work. If you have Jack and jackstands by the rear axles or frame that will give you more room and make it easier.

Everything went smooth till the wiring bracket. 12mm socket just spun. Then tried a socket for stripped bolt heads and it sheared the heads off... still trying..

Can anyone comment? I’m looking under my 2003 and it looks like he bolt pattern in the frame is there but the plate isn’t there in the middle.

This is great. I have a 2020 Lexus GX460 and purchased a factory trailer hitch that’s sitting in my garage waiting install. Would you say the install process on a 2020 GX is approximately the same? If so, I’d love to do it myself.

I’m trying this today on my 2020 GX460. The electrical is different, as there are no 10mm bolts holding it on and the bracket seems different. I can probably figure that out, but I can’t figure out how to disconnect the 2 wiring harnesses from the connectors. It’s not clear to me how to separate the two plastic connectors. I’d send a picture if I could. Any tips on steps to disconnect?
