This is the first knife-making video which is awesome in two ways. The first one: absolutely beautiful knife. The second one: it makes me imagine Tom and Jerry are playing the music in the same place you work.
Almost completely done without power tools, very cool!!
Well. It is mainly because I do not have lot of those😅
The shape of the knife is very charming! Great job!
Wow, that's beautiful. That turned out looking so good.
Thanks for the video. This gives me some ideas about how to get started on my first (Helle) knife blank handle. The music also makes a vy nice change from most videos on CZcams.
You got to congratulate young men who rather than wasting their lives doing drugs, use their time to do something productive with craftsmanship.
Good one. ✌😎

They're some out there who can do both...Seriously, one of my nephews (age 29) has been the "Southern Oregon Premier Homes" award winner in trim carpentry for the last 8 years running. He functions fine without, but when he partakes in the "Last dance with Mary Jane" he goes into an entirely HIGHER level creating ornate hand carvings. He just this past March was paid 100k for 6 door jambs that took 3 1/2 months to carve and install....Although, he is in the lower % of people who do drugs that can accomplish things such as this...He is going to clear over 2 million by age 35 and can't accept any more work to a client list due to being booked solid for the next decade.
16 high on some bud working on a knife
Thank you for sharing, nice work, and video, excellent music to work with, have a nice, and safe day, from Uruguay
Awesome! I love this handle shape!. Regards!!
Great job!
Отличная работа, уважуха тебе друг что делишься опытом.
Thanks, you gave me great idea to solve my problem
Good job right there! Nice!
Excellent blade man. I've got about 10 blades with no handles lol. Thank you!
I just bought four rat tailed blades and now I need to make handles for the first time with no tools !

very nice. simple elegant handle. good job :)
Very nice!
Very nice work and that is a great old work bench.
its an old school plaining bench I was lucky enough to get one from my work just this year, about 100 years old and solid as you could get
Amazing
Good job !
Very cool
Well done bro..
Very nice. Thanks a lot
Hyvä video Onni!
Just watched Jon Levi right before this and his intro is the same song 😂 tripped me out
Well done for using mostly hand tools
Well it's not that I chose not to use them. I don't really have lots of powertools :D
Thanks for watching!
nice music and nice video
I like using a paddle bit for drilling my handle seems to look a bit cleaner . Yours is clean to . not downing your work . You make good handles .thanks for video.
Very nice
Komiaa!
Knife 10 ok 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Excellent beautiful handle
Thank you!
Great
Franz Liszt's Second Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt. He also wrote the music.
Музыка очень гормонично подходит
Хороший получился
Ohhoh nyt on video kyllä menny ohi🥳
Bravo
Nice
seeing how you went primitive on this build, I would have loved to seen pins Being used instead of apoxy.. But that's just my personal opinion, looks good!
Love the handle looks fantastic. Im sorry every time I hear this music I hear Daffy Duck singing it.
If your workbench could only talk. It has seen a lot of use for a lot of years.
The corners have been rounded off over the years from how much he uses it haha
It is the original workbench Saint Joseph had in his workshop in Nazareth.
@red angry bird
My grandfather just confirmed that this is the same exact workbench. Just had to give some wd40 for those screws.
You must have a lot of wood laying around. I usually use a piece of cardboard and a Popsicle stick to mix epoxy.
Love the video, super helpful. I was wondering where you got the blade?
I made it earlier. Sadly i didn't film it, but you may see some blademaking soon!
Ни гриндера ни станков сложных, сел и на коленях сделал отличный нож.
Hi, thanks for sharing this good video ... What type of wood did you use for that ?
I am not sure, but i recommend to make sure that the wood you are using is hard enough.
Thanks for comment!
Muy buen trabajo Onni, de donde eres ....... ?
Thank you! And i am from Finland :)
Nice video - but I was wondering - does your workbench date from the time of the Vikings? :)
I quess so. It's my great grandpas old bench and pretty much rounded everywhere 😅
Okay, nice job. I subscribed. But, I like information! We all do! Lol.. what did you do and with what!?
I need to add some kind of subtitles next time. I am also having little hard times with English sometimes, but google translator exist ;)
Thanks for comment!
Hi I was wondering were you got you wood for the Hidden Tang knife
Did you stabilize the wood? Looking to get into stock removal and I wanted my first knife to be a hidden tang like yours
No i didn't, i have no equipment for that even though it would be useful.
I have made lots of knives and I don’t stabilize the wood if you use a good hardwood and make it properly I don’t feel that it is necessary and I’ve made a lot of knives . But that is just my opinion.
Hi!
What did you use on the blade to not stick in the handle when you glued the first time? Or did I miss something? Great work.. 👍🏼
Just some vaseline.
Thank you!
Onni Nissinen OK! Smart...
Cool video.
Question: 2:45 - Clamping handle and tang with epoxy together. 2:50 - Handle, no tang.
What happened to the tang/blade that was fastened to the handle at 2:45?
Thank you.
I clued those two wooden parts together. I did put some vaseline to the tang so it won't stick inside the handle. It was easier to do that way.
Thanks for watching!
@@onnissinen didn't you have problems with Vaseline and wood later when you wanted to finally glue the handle and the blade? BTW you inspired me with that handle. I'll do similar with this same technique for my pukko blade :)
Actually i didn't have any problems with that. How did your knife turn out?
Thanks for your comment!
Ps. It's puukko
I like the knife handle making music. Is that a Bowie conc'erto in edge sharp?
I am a young knife collector I have a knife thats handle needs to be replaced I'm am gonna try to do what you did in the video any tips or what kind of glue to use
Any epoxy should be good as long as you let it set 24 hours. Slow set epoxy usually gives you a stronger bond. If you want a specific recommendation people speak wonders about System Three T-88 epoxy. It's supposed to be used on ships.
SHOW US THE WORK BENCH!!!
PLEASE!
THANKS!
What kind of epoxy do you use
Just regular 5 minute epoxy. Thanks for watching!
What glue is that? Is there a special glue I need for making knife handles?
No. It is just regular epoxy glue, it is used on many other things too :)
Superb! What types of wood were used?
Thanks!
I am not sure what wood that was, but i got it from my grandfather and it seemed hard enough for that.
can it be birch, look like it to me
Yeah, looks like birch or maple, the second looks like walnut
What do you cover the tang in when you’re glueing the handle together?
I used some vaseline so the tang won´t stick to the handle.
Beautiful work. Doesn’t Vaseline left in the hole prevent a good epoxy bond when you do for to glue the tang in?
Knife turned out beautifully, but I wouldn't apply epoxy or any other kind of finish without at least wearing nitrile gloves. You never know when something will cross your skin barrier and damage your liver.
Im sure you may build it too guys. Just look for stodoys page and build it too.
The music is awesome , who
Is it what is it ? Never heard anything like it
Ps.knife is great !
Dirk v it's called the Hungarian Rhapsody, first time I ever heard it was on Tom and Jerry lol
Thank you! And yep MVanHorn Knew it :)
Music made this video very relaxing to watch.
Anybody else watch Jon Levi? Same song
Nicely done. Where was the blade from.? ;)
The blade is my own handmade blade. But i forgot it for too long to vinegar, so it has a small groove right now. Luckily, it does not hinder the use👍
Onni Nissinen nice work on the blade, great shape to it.;)
Thank you!😃
Gostei ! Teria no meu EDC !
剛開始是雙刃刀
完成後變單刃刀
jatka samaan malliin oon itekkin tehny 2kpl puukojq
did you make the blade or did you purchase it?
I made earlier. Unfortunately i didn´t record it.
You probably already have been asked the same question, but what (other than the epoxy or glue) keeps your blade in the handle? From what I understand, you need a pin or pommel or something else to keep it from shaking free. I’m asking for my knives
Actually I used only epoxy. I tried to make the fit as tight as possible between the tang and the handle. Also I put some grooves to the tang and drilled some deeper points inside the tang to give some room for the epoxy to go. I left the tang pretty wide so it would be stronger. You really have to make sure to fill every bit of space with the epoxy so it will be one solid piece. I recommend using this technique on smaller blades. I don't know if it would work on bigger blades when the torque increases.
Hope this helped despite my not so great english😅
@@onnissinen ok that makes sense considering I’m not gonna go to hard on a smaller knife. Also your English is better than mine. It’s perfect 👍🏼
I kwow this video is several years old, but the only thing I would like to know. How is the bench or the unseen apparatus beneath, holding the knife blade so well in place. I would really like to know, so as to building one for myself. Because, this style of hand crafting a handle is an absolute truth for the term "hand crafted" ...Old school, one of a kind production. ..I like it. Fine job Sir, carry on.
The apparatus is called "carpenters vice".
@@user-qb7kw6pn4z Thanks for the reply, Onni. I watched the "camp knife" and "machete" videos and once my carpenters bench is complete. I'm going to make the camp knife 1st. No worries, I'll give all the credit to you, Das Vidanya (Sp?)
Mitä puuta käytit kahvassa?
In English: what tree did you use?
Did you use glue ps. Can u use any wood
epoxy and yes
Mitä ainetta käytät viimeistelyyn ja mitä liimaa, epoksia kai
Tino Lievonen
Joo perus 5min epoksia ja viimeistelyyn köyhänmiehenbudjetilla itseasiassa auringonkukkaöljyä :D. Suosittenlen esim. Danish oilia tai jotakin vastaavaa. Paljon on erilaisia vahoja ja öljyjä markkinoilla vaikka tuokin menee, mutta ei suojaa kovin hyvin.
I’m gonna see if I can make a knife
xXLil ObamaXx
I absolutely recommend!
Onni Nissinen thank you
Go for it, I stared making knives when I was 16 I am now 43 and you only get better with every knife you make, and yes even though I been making knives for so many years I still watch other knife makers videos and I really appreciate the craftsmanship, the knife on this video is absolutely beautiful!
DANILO
What kind of epoxy was that?
in another comment he said it was just normal epoxy
Song?
Kuinka pitkä tuo puukko on?
Onko itse tehty terä vai jostain kaupasta? 🎩🔪 on komee lopputulos
Kiitos!
Terä on itsetehty vaan en hoksannut ottaa videolle sitä.
Don't use epoxy with the finger can easily give skin irritation and rashes
I should get some silicon gloves.
Thanks for comment!
Onni Nissinen super work anyway
Why is that tang cut up like that
What's the difference if it could cut paper honing it wasn't part of the video
What type of wood was used here please?
most wood is suitable for this and In another comment he said he didn’t know
Thank you for helping people out here :D. I actually think it is birch but at that time i wasn't sure.
Thanks!!
А без дрели.
Why do you need 2 pieces of wood?
I used the smaller piece as a bolster and also to give some contrast. And it is way easier to get tight fit to the tang using some kind of bolster.
Woodglut is a good solution for every woodworker.

I had hoped this might be a good video. Then the music started. Bye.
Thanks for the comment tho!
And yeah. I know.
the music is just a distraction and annoying, turn off and watch
This video sucks. Most of the action is off the screen.
bad soundtrack
Very nice
I like using a paddle bit for drilling my handle seems to look a bit cleaner . Yours is clean to . not downing your work . You make good handles .thanks for video.
I need to try that. Also would be a lot easier if just i had drill press.
Thank you for comment!
