- In this video we show you everything that is currently growing on our farm. We haven't been here long and the land needs a lot of tlc but we feel SO fortunate to already have so many productive trees here. From berries to kiwis, we certainly will not be short of fruit for the next few months!
We have a very overgrown pond, which we hope to restore very soon and look forward to starting a wonderful no dig garden by next Spring. We discuss some of the local wildlife that we are aware of and make some delicious apple and fig chutney.
Seeing what the land is already producing makes us incredibly excited about what we can potentially create here! :)
Thank YOU for watching!

The garden looks like a fun and tasty challenge. I think those rosemary bushes might actually be lavender.
Definitely 😊
We love that - a fun and tasty challenge 💚😊
With boars on the land you will have to protect any fruit trees you plant with a welded wire fence cage and 2 stout stakes. The cage should be 4 to 5 foot tall.
The boars are using the marsh areas as wallows and the fresh running water for drinking. I would spend some time trying to determine how to plug up your holding tank so you control where the water flows. Try to make the habitat less attractive for the wild pigs. On the other hand, you can hunt them and enjoy pork that is better than anything you have had from the grocery store. Check with the local authorities for details.
Persimmons are delicious!!!! When I first arrived on the continent as a twenty year old bride I didn't want to try them , my husband had to beg me saying, " once you've tried them I swear you will want more and more," he was right!!! Persimmons and figs are my favourite fruits!
We can't wait to try the persimmons when they are ready 😊💚 loving the figs too!
Hi there. Lovely video! Now, I could be mistaken, but the fruit shown at 17:05 aren't pears, but quinces (or "Marmelos" in Portuguese). They are very tart and will never taste sweet even when ripe. Traditionally, in Portugal, people would boil them with sugar to make "Marmelada" -- a type of dessert with a very dense consistency (not runny, like jam) that tastes great, especially when eaten with cheese.
I wish you both happiness and good luck in that little piece of land that you bought in that lovely part of Portugal.
By the way, please be careful with those wild boars, especially when they have their offspring close by. They can be very aggressive (just like badgers) and their bite can break your leg bones
Hey! Thanks for commenting and for the marmelos info. We will definitely give marmelada a go, sounds delicious 😊💚
We are definitely going to need to do our research into keeping the boars at bay
@@BaileysHomestead Your best bet to keep the wildlife away is 2 well trained border collies (in the event you want to raise animals and 2 rescues that will be big dogs. Select each breed from the same litter. Once they get to a certain size, you will have determined who the alpha dog is from each litter. Your goal is to keep the two gentle siblings in a separate crate in the dog run at night. Let the two alphas out and they will guard the property but never stray to far from their siblings. Here you will see how it works. "Littermate Syndrome" czcams.com/video/-YWUkV-0gTM/video.html Eventually, they will all go out together. This fellow has deer and boars around. As you can see, the dogs are still small, but just being out and about seems to have the deer under control already.
@@stevejohnstonbaugh9171 The big podengo race (male) are great to make the wild boar (Javali in Portuguese) dont go near their farm. Because the male dogs piss everywhere and the wild boar have a great sense of smell and think that piss from Podengo dog is from wolves.
They were quinces...if you dice them up and simmer them with sugar or better still honey they will be wonderful on your cereal...or in a pie. When cooked they are like pears but more floral . In the second world war they canned them for the soldiers and passed them off as pears.
Olá, I couldn’t see clearly but I believe those pears are quince, marmelos (from we can make marmelada). The plant can grow as a tree or a bush! Grown well near water!
Olà, that's great, hope to make some marmelada 😋💚
So Lucky lot's of good things off your land. A lot of trimming and offer work to do. It will keep you busy. Great place to live.❤ Nice you have Water as well 🙏
We do feel very lucky 😊💚 lots to keep us very busy for sure!
You're lucky having all that fruit. The plants up the drive are lavender not rosemary aren't they? You can eat fig skins. The "pear tree" by the pond looks like a quince. Not sure whether that would be ripe yet in Portugal. If you add some pieces of quince to apple pie it will have a lovely scent. Maybe the bitter grapes are for wine making not eating?
I wonder whether you'll find any interesting trees and plants on your overgrown terrace. Fascinating. Don't accidentally cut any good ones down! Good luck!
You can make blackberry jam or jelly, or blackberry chutney or blackberry vinegar. Otherwise I'd say blackberry and apple crumble - that's easy but you need an oven of course. 😁
Blackberry and Apple crumble ! and Jam . Nice chutney ,made me hungry LOL
Sounds delicious 😋 💚
It’s so great that you have so many fruit producing trees and vines already because it takes so long to grow them. I planted an apple and a pear two years ago but it will be a few more years before they produce fruit.. I would definitely take good care of the existing trees so you don’t lose any of them. Wild boars can be very dangerous so keep a close eye on Bailey. Your property is amazing and has loads of potential. ❤️
Ah we feel so incredibly lucky to have so many things already growing 💚😊 want to get some more trees planted as it will definitely take a little while before they produce fruit.
The good thing is the boars only seem to be about at night time when Bailey is normally snuggling up with us but will definitely be careful 💚😊
APPLE CIDER! You are SO fortunate to have an antique fruit press with the property! As fruit ripens, you can press/squeeze it for juice and let the birds feat on the remnants. What remains will be the start of your compost pile! Get the pressure washer out now and give the press a good cleaning so it's ready to go!
The grapes and fruit trees will greatly benefit from pruning. Get yourselves a good book on pruning and the proper tools. They will be invaluable.
You will likely be able to locate many grape vines that were mowed down when that area with the cement post was clear cut. If you can nurture the sprouts, You can grow fresh vines that have root systems that may be hundreds of years old. As you walk the grounds, try to envision where the rows of vines ran. If the wire is still intact from post to post, that is a huge help - just look down in the grass.
Be careful when strimming, you don't want to cut off the sprouts. Just cut around them ♥
Some great tips and advice there, thank you! 😊 💚💚
@@BaileysHomestead Oh you bet! The pleasure is all mine. I hope I can assist you folks as you pursue you homesteading dream. Overarching principal to remember is, you can't make it all happen at once. Be frugal, spend your money wisely and don't buy new when used is perfectly fine - and start building a complete set of mechanics tools! With the much property I suspect you will need a reliable 50 HP tractor with a brush hog so you can mow between what was the rows of vines until you determine if there are any vine sprouts. You'll have to go out with a tape measure and physically guess what the spacing was between rows. And get some fluorescent flags on wire so you can mark the vines, volunteer trees, seedlings that should not be mowed down. I carried a 5 gallon bucket that had all of my walkabout supplies; professional bypass pruner (Felco No. 2), two sizes of fold up pruning saws (Silky Brand), fluorescent flags, arbor tie for tying up tree limbs, 1 can of fluorescent spray paint, a hammer, clipboard with writing implements and anything else you would like to have handy. But don't overload it! 😊
Make Brian's amazing blackberry jam , we loved gathering the blackberry's and the jam on scones lots of butter I will never forget.
Sounds delicious 😋 💚
If you have to many ask your neighbors if they have fig trees in their land and share some with them. That's the Portuguese way.
Nothing go to waste. I remember my grandmother pick them up and go to local primary school in the fig season and share them with the school cook, that way the school dont need to buy the fruit for a couple days. I dont know if schools right now can accept outside fruits, but you can share them with friends or neighbors.
Of course, we just love that about Portugal! Very sweet about the primary school making great use of the fruit. Absolutely have been sharing any extras with others 💚💚
I have been thinking about what you said in your Q&A video, and I think, given Will's carpentry skills, and his high attention to detail, he should try making bespoke furniture. Not a large market, but once you get a name, you will fly ! Good luck and hope this reaches you.
Thank you for taking the time to contact us 😊 I agree, he could make some amazing pieces of furniture when we get settled here!
Love that your wearing hats! Looks like you need to build or buy a ladder for fruit picking!
Absolutely loads of fruit you have. It will be so nice to start looking after them again, i bet you can't wait. I would say one thing, those Rosemary bushes you mentioned are definately Lavender, an easy mistake to make when starting. What you could do if you wanted to keep them a nice bushy size is to cut them down now then they will grow fresh stems before it coolsdown for the winter, and then will be well placed to grow on strong for you next year. Cuttings take very easy from them as well. 👍🏼👍🏼
We are so excited to get started properly with the garden! Thanks for watching 😊
Am I the only person thinking homemade fig rolls!
Need to get baking! 💚😋
Ohh I love a good chutney, great vlog
Thank you 😊
Black berry syrup for pancakes would be nice.
Good shout 💚
I love all the fruit trees and you guys are a joy to watch. Keep it up! Bailey is really cute - funny that she grabbed a fig and wanted to keep it.
Ah thank you! 😊💚🐕
Get local advice as what you can do about the boars! Keep Bailey in at night!
Good advice 😊 she's always in snuggled with us at night at least
Get a dehydrating net type tent hanger. They are cheap and require no power. You could hang it in your outdoor kitchen/patio away from the rain
Interesting, will look into getting one thanks 😊💚
You both remind of two little children exploring paradises garden😊 But stop joking, this garden is amazing. It seems to be quite fertile soil, so you can grow your own vegetables, but be careful, you need to protect them of the boars. Enjoy your little paradise😊
And for the blackberries, cook them and pass them through a tissue to get the pure juice. Then boil the juice with some sugar and fill it in some clean bottles. Close the bottles immediately after filling them. So the juice should last almost over the winter. Use always just a little bit and fill up with water.
That lot should keep you busy well before you start creating beds for vegetables!. Lots of pickling, fermenting, jams, tarts and chutneys to come. Mix with a few chillies and you have a perfect sweet and spicy sauce. P.S. I wonder if that little building across the way was an old pump house for irrigation...? Also, I wonder if you have any neighbours who have a goat or two?. They can clear an awful lot of land in no time.
We plan to be much better organised this year to process all the produce 😋
We recently found out that little building was used for drying corn 😊💚
Fig jam is my favourite, but there are loads of recipes for all sorts with figs. Have also had them roasted served with cheese, was tasty as well.
Sounds yummy 😋 💚
so much advice given but if u read previous comments it's already there, lol.
The pears are quince. You can make marmalade or cook them and eat as desert. Can not eat them raw
Thanks 😊
Ola wonderful video lots of fruit from the farme. I love your spot to have this beautiful food and enjoying the sunset. Beautiful life 😊. Thanks and I se you next Sunday.
Thank you so much!! See you next Sunday 💚😊🇵🇹🐕
The fig Tree should be cut back a lot so you will have better fruits.
Lots of pruning to do for sure 😊
YOU ARE AWESOME, I'M ALWAYS WAITING FOR YOUR VIDEO. HUGS
Ah you're so kind Antonio 😊💚💚
Your Pears are Quinces (Marmelo in Portuguese) , they are related to Pears , Apples , Almonds , Plums , Cherries and your garden Roses .
The English word Marmalade is from the Portuguese Marmelada meaning Quince preserve , buy some Marmelada in the supermarket to have with some buttered bread because it is absolutely delicious and will encourage you to do your own.
Why buy marmelada when she can make her own next month? Much better and will last a year till next Autumn. There'll be free quinces everywhere... Try different flavours: quince marmelada with ginger, with orange peel... And quince jelly = geleia de marmelo is my favourite, better than honey.
Quince vinegar = vinagre de marmelos is also very nice for salads etc.
Whole Quinces wrapped in foil and roasted on a wood fire, will make a nice mash to eat with meat such as saussages or pork chops... Or boil them quatered and cored, no need to peel and eat as a side dish or as desert with a little honey or brown sugar. Enjoy!
Ohhh we are SO excited to try marmelada and the other recipes and ideas you have all so kindly shared! 😊 thanks so much 💚
Fig rolls - excellent!
Yummy! 😋
Black berry jam, you can make a soothing cough syrup. Black berry as any other berry got lots of recipes. I do believe those brumble black berries have big seed. Use a sieve or press to rid of seeds. Enjoy 😊
Interesting!! They are very sweet so would need a low sugar jam option possibly... no seeds though, we've been munching away 😊💚
You have to get the wine making on the go
We sure will! 💚
I think the cameras are called trail cameras
They are and we still need to get some 😊
Bom dia! 🌹🌹🌹
💚💚
Olives can be eaten; granted they are an acquired taste. Get more local information about when to pick them.
time to learn how to prune......you have a lot of work ahead but you have the basis for a great farm...........
Lots to do but very excited about it ☺️💚
That's looks great! What area are you living in?
We are in the North, near Amarante 💚
Hi you two🎉 Quite interested to know how you plan to finance your life in the future, are you relying for some income from CZcams, or do you have other sources of income? Nice video, chutney looks delicious. Tony xx❤🇬🇧
They've expalined that in a previous video: they both work, she's got a job with an airline he's a carpenter and joiner.
Hey Tony! Yes I still have a job and we have some different ideas for things we can do in the future as well. Will is a joiner, so great to have a trade behind us 😊💚
Marmelos

🌳🌱🌿🍀 Difference between quinces and apples or pears: quinces are a bit lumpy and furry. When ripe they are yellow and smell great, but need to be cooked to eat. Suggestions for cooking in my other post below.
What you have there by the water mine is a little quince tree. If you like them, you can grow a new one in a more suitable place just from a branch stick stuck in the ground around January.
Unlike most fruit trees, they don't need to be graffted. Same method for fig trees, if you find someone has a delicious fig variety you like, just ask to take a cutting and stick it in the ground in January and wait for it to take root. Or better... put it in a deep pot near home where you can water it and protect from frost till it roots, then move to permanent place a year later.
There are 100s of varieties of figs, some fruit early summer, I think "figos Sao Joao" is one of them.
I once paid 4 pounds for 4 figs in a London Waitrose... How many figs have you got??? = money in the bank, but difficult to transport and keep fresh.
Try eating figs cold straight from the fridge, or... with a little presunto wrapped around each half. Delicious!
TASKS for winter: sit by the fire with a plan / rough drawing of your land and decide what you want to plant and where. Prepare spots by digging hard and deep. When January comes you'll be ready to buy the fruit trees you want and plant them. Don't plant too many as you'll have to water them in dry weather for the first couple of years, till they root deep.
I think a couple of cherry trees will do well on the damp ground by the water... next to a couple of walnuts... decisions... decisions 🍒🍒and adult trees will provide a shady spot for a bench under them.
Donna, thank you so much for taking the time to share all this information, this type of advice is invaluable to us and we love that our videos give us the opportunity to learn from other people like yourself! We can't wait to develop our garden and get stuck in 😊💚💚
On your Instagram i have sent you lots of very easy recipes for all the fruits you said you have growing
They can be made into jams, jellies and chutneys and pickles...enjoy 😊
Awesome! Thanks a million 💚😊
