Mr. Lover Lover and Sweetness aside; Labeed's third place finish coming from way, way out of it - most deserving of mention. Then again, to think that this was its trademark style - powerhouse finisher.
A fireworks display of real jockeys' skills down the straightaway. Crowd gripping indeed! Hubert "Chinna" Bartley was unperturbed and fully composed from start to finish; even with riding WIZARD Emelio "Bimbo" Rodriguez attacking with every stride aboard Sweetness. Wow!

Hubert Washington Bartley Ak Chinna Bartley a brilliant ride this seems like it was yesterday wow racing is not the racing i used to we will never see another jockey riding as flat has Mr Washington
Rohan - Nice extended coverage including interview/ recap. Good to see the uber talented Chinna (RIP) winning despite Mr. Lover Lover going 1.5 kilo over. The win was redemption of sorts for Chinna who by then was battling weight problems which impacted his career. Nevertheless, he always gave of his best whenever he turned up at the track. It was also redemption for Mr. Lover Lover after a disappointing Governor’s Cup. The fans got this one wrong, as they installed Steel Dawn who finished down the track as the favorite. Labeeb and En Vogue rounded out the frame behind Sweetness and Mr. Lover Lover.
Great rider but anyone who knew "China" knows what was is problem. In Jamaica the word Legend, icon and great are given to people, who doesn't deserve the first letter of any of these words. This Jockey was great, and is a Legend. Top five Jockey of all time in Jamaica, he is right there place him where you want to. "Ride on Jock".

Judging from the last 2 minutes of the clip; Bartley obviously had pretty serious health issues. Puzzling that with so many people around, a simple bottle of water took so very long to get to the jockey's hands. Mind boggling!
Dual Derby winner having later won the Trinidad Derby partnered by Simon Husbands on that occasion. A progeny of mean sprinter Distinctive Bingo out of the Full Well mare Be Hopeful, Mr Lover Lover carried all of 130lbs that day due to Bartley's weight problem to be the only Jamaica Derby winner to shoulder in excess of the 126lbs allotted to colts and geldings.
I remember Simon Husband saying in a interview after the race.thst he told the other riders in the race that if anyone come closer than 6 lengths winning margin he will give that rider his winning stake for the race
Hubert "Chinna" Bartley will forever be remembered as one of the finest reinsmen to have ever ridden in Jamaica. His efforts added him to a prestigious talent pool which included elite British Jockeys as the great Lester Piggott; Pat Eddery and Willie Carson. Also, Jamaica born American - Shaun Bridgmohan(US based) and ace American rider DeShawn Parker (Mountaineer Park, Virginia).
Like these memorable moments of local racing reminded me of the days when jockeys were our heroes especially when we have one or two living in our community as young boys we use to hitch a truck ride from Cockburn pen to the track to see Immanuel sattall ,Michael Stockhausen and Albert Kelly ride, those guys were our area jockeys use to be our boyhood dream to become jockeys.only if most of us parents didn't approve of it maybe it would have happened. I remember the Saturday before the Derby MR Lover Lover work ah mile in 1:40 with H.Bartley and when him pull at the 6 furlong and the clock man them tell him say ah 1:40 Mr lover lover work and then him say is him is going to Ride him because them switch Rider because H.Bartley was the regular jockey for sweetness and sweetness connection take him off and give bimbo the Ride
It makes sense when you consider that he was an American horse lol. So even though he was a champion sprinter, he could definitely sire foals who could carry it the distance in Jamaica.
If one remembers that period 1997 very well; 'twas a time when prejudice through CLASSISM flourished in Jamaica. For that alone, I wasn't shocked that no-confidence statements in the training abilities of the gentleman, were hurled from every direction by naysayers. As you saw, Adin Williams sported dreadlocks - he was a Rastafarian.

I think mr lover lover was distinctly bingo by distinctly native or fantastic Destiny one out those mare because it was the same owner own all of them because him was a breeder too
And Mr. Lover Lover was out of the Jamaican mare Be Hopeful. By the way, when you're saying the horse's dam, say "out of" not "by". "By" the sire, "out of" the dam.

Distinctive Bingo was out of the American mare Bingo Mary. He was an American-bred horse by U.S. stallion Distinctive Pro, not Jamaican-bred.
And Mr. Lover Lover was out of the Jamaican mare Be Hopeful. By the way, when you're saying the horse's dam, say "out of" not "by". "By" the sire, "out of" the dam.
