PEMANDU's Dato' Sri Idris Jala - The Leader Malaysia Could Have Had - But Didn't
Born in Sarawak as a devout Kelabit Christian, Dato' Sri Idris Jala wasn’t meant to work at Shell for 23 years. Nor was he meant to head Malaysia Airlines, help Proton in its turnaround strategy, work as a former Minister in the Malaysian government, much less advise governments and global corporations in socioeconomic affairs as Chairman of PEMANDU Associates.
And yet he did, thanks to a heady cocktail of destiny, faith and hard work, culminating in his current roles as Co-Chairman of Sunway, ProChancellor of Sunway University and Chairman of Heineken Malaysia, in between lecturing twice a year at Harvard University.
Here, he talks to Khoo Hsu Chuang about Leadership, Fate, Faith and Serendipity, while proffering original and practical suggestions for Malaysia’s woes.

I am currently at Leadership Conference in the London and Idris is a speaker - what a phenomenal man
I watch many forum and interviews in CZcams and many of them I left halfway. But this forum is so interesting and very informative that I stay till the end. Thank you for this forum. Really salute DS Idris Jala especially when he was in MAS turning a lost making company into profitable again.
Such a brilliant Malaysian. A shame our current Govt not using him to fix the issues we facing.
Political stability is the key for Malaysia to move forwards. No use in talking about economic growth when the policies and the government keep changing.
How to be stable whn chdnese n indians nowadays aru bent on mocking n insultisg the Muslims every single day in NEWSWAV??
Iam proud being a Sarawakian to have such a fine man and his achievements.
Respect This Gentleman!
Hi Khoo, idris video one of the best i seen, you should get him back and do a more deeper deep dive in different areas of his expertise. What he expound is real life stuff. Keep it up
Key takeaways; 1) increase tax base 2) gradually introduce free float fuel prices 3) focus on education 4) public health prevention of NCD 5) from 2) financial shift to active mobility and public transport 6) divest unsustainable GLC 7) get the best out of people, does not matter which subject of major 8) segmented P&L 9) know true North 10) situational leadership 11) HAIR 'helicopter' , analytical, imaginative , reality skills. 12) Game of impossible
Genius is ONE percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.
Love this episode. Brilliantly executed. Dato’ Sri Idris is an inspiring man. I learned a lot that changed my perspective! “Choose your battle”.
I also believe in GST...becos it is more transparent. LKY cried on the day Singapore was kicked out from Msia, and his determination had put Singapore in the top among the world now. The success is not just becos of his leadership but also the citizen of Singapore as a whole who are willing to put aside everything and move with his leadership.
The problem with GST in malaysia is always transparency, efficiency and implementation..
Race is the main reason for the different outcome of that country vs surrounding region. It's cool to say all races are equally capable, but that's not real.
We also need to prioritise spending especially at difficult times
I have never known about this wonderful man and his capabilities. I salute you and wish you to be future PM of Msia.
Racist comments by haters of the Malay race who walk around with the perception that they are the superior being in this region - isn’t that just like those living in that illegally occupied land in the middle east fantasing that it is their right to be there. As if it is not enough that the Malays are being marginalised by them or by their influence in the private sector these racist bigots stop at nothing to continously ridicule and defame the Malays.
Excellent. Tq Idris and to Khoo for a great job
Datos Sri, I love your words, "When you failed to plan, you plan to fail!" You are "One" of such a wonderful human being created by God! Praise the Good Lòrd for this Wonderful creation!
We're just too proud to have a Sarawakian named Idris Jala. Thank God for having you, Dato Sri.
No monopoly of Bernas. They are one of the reason food is expensive. Government needs to support private sector to build up Malaysia food security.
Sorry, not increase tax but eradicate corruptions altogether.
Ya no mention of huge leakage through corruption.
My exact opinion
Infact Malaysia is a rich country...Previous Government practice corruptions...that why Msia is in a big debt...why your discussion never talk about corruption...hahaH
No use talking about who could have or might have been a good leader.
For as long as that only one certain race and religion can only be the PM, this country can never move forward.
Because corruption is deeply rooted and born inside this race and part of this religion.
End of story for this country. 5:35
Amazing, 1.5hrs of wisdom imparted to listeners. Kudos Mr Khoo.
What Malaysia can do to progress towards the level of advanced economies is to unite everyone under a common framework. Religion and race cannot be the framework because they divide people. The best framework is national identity, something that Singapore used and, it seems, more recently also Indonesia. Thailand has had its own national identity for a very long time.
Malaysia wil never become like Singapore unless it has the racial power dynamics of Singapore. It's unrealisitic as pilipinos expecting their country to be like Korea or Indonesia expecting to be the next China
Looking forward to reading the book.
From Idris Jala cases, as Christian i came to a conclusions be faithful and obedient to the Lord. Be nice, study hard, creative, always praying and work relentlessly. The God will bless and open your way to be successful in particular contributing to the human races.
what a fruitful session, food for thought
Higher calling 🙏
A wise and practical man. Joseph was sold as a slave to the Egyptian. Our situation during time in Egypt were different but similar. Pharos gave 100% confidence to Joseph. Joseph was unhindered in the execution of his plan. But in today's world, pride over rule everything. Pride are mentioned many time in the bible. If any country has so much pride in their mentality, be prepared for the fall
Unless there's divine intervention, can't imagine even a fellow minority Msian to be anywhere like Joseph.
Great analogy indeed. DS Idris is a faithful servant of God and the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit in him guides him and provides him with godly wisdom to overcome the worldly problems. May God continue to use him in mighty ways to solve the existing problems created by those who are corrupted, greedy, unrepentant and have evil motives.
Ya, I like your narrative. Idris Jala also same as the case of Daniel and his 3 friends.
Great conversations
Wow i luv the song❤❤❤✌️
good interview. love Dato Sri Idris's pragmatic views
Amazing insights ,more to share I presume
Sayangnya org yg bijak seperti Idris Jala ini tidak msk ke arena politik. Sekarang ramai org politik ambi rasuah!
very interesting talk given by DS Idris..
IdrisJala thanks for sharing your inspiring journey
What a personality, someone to emulate and wish we had more like him.
Great episode!! ❤
What a nice episode! I stumbled upon you podcast Chuang and it has been nothing short of spectacular! Thank you so much for sharing these insightful conversations with us.
Hi Nazmi
Thanks so much for the kind feedback. I’ve been hoping to put back some positivity and inspiration into the system, trying to get away from all the bad news and sentiment out there.
Hope you can keep tuning in and please subscribe if you can!
Thanks again and have a good day 👍☺️
Thanks for the excellent conversation. Looking forward for the book!
Outstanding pod cast - kudos!
Excellent session. Well done!
The mic did not pick up the signal when the secondary speaker spoke.
One of a few honest man left that won't suit in a political world
Salam to listen to this video about the speed from dato Sri it makes me very interested about politics about business i am in the business for 4os dato Sri no s very well about all
Good interview. Idris is inspiring as always. Clear takeaways. I look forward to his book.
Engage him for a service to expedite the process of economic recovery & recommendations. Pemandu Associates consultancy firm. Google Wikipedia yourself.
Interesting
I'm wondering if the host actually realised that in some of the portions his audio couldn't be heard.
Super work!
Hey.. i know that voice! I seldom missed the breakfast grilled that time.. good to see you again Khoo Soo Chuan!
I think current sarawak leaders and sabah leaders like syafiq apdal will take malaysua to the next kevel. I do not expect much from peninsula bumi leaders as all seems to be stuck in a rut. GPS snd warisan should form a coalition and fight fir seats in peninsula as many voters are fed up with both sides. No solution. Only create problems.
Malay peninsula won't vote them. I guess just give sabah sarawak full autonomy
Sarawakians robbed by the present YDP Negeri (Governor)....now quarrelling amongst themselves for the looted wealth. This week's court case involving the governor's present wife and second son bears witness
The sad truth about decades of plundering but even sadder he's getting away with it.
pray that GOD would put someone like DIJ to head the our Sarawak someday and bless him ....
It was reported that this Tan Sri is a rare non-Muslim or Malay to helm a GLC in Malaysia. That should be the case - the most capable man or woman for the job. People like them would help Malaysia developed into a successful country.
He would have been P.M. candidate with the extraordinary achievements he made for the government if only he was truly appreciated by the administration... unfortunately.
Simply captivated by his insights 🎉🎉
Truth is GST is one of the solutions..bitter tablets...is the gov have the political power? Now is the right time.
Good interview…sound system sucks… shame such good content without the good audio
Love your interviews, but the sound quality can be improved i feel.
Hi Jerry you are right. And many apologies. The issues have been fixed since. Thanks!
Congrats on your success. Maybe its much more interesting if its sticked to any of those GLCs.
Very wise man
Malaysia's main problem is one and he has indirectly made it clear. The fix is easy but the execution is hard is because this one problem. The politicians and businessman are two different types of people with different concept and rules to live/work by. When the two becomes one, Singapore happens but unfortunately, Malaysia would take huge reformation for that to happen because the leadership is still largely based on the political side of the spectrum
Can we take back this guy in kerajaan
Just high talk always great n nice lah
What mic are u using, so hard to listen.
Gst is needed, why on earth we let politicians get rid of it last time
I like yr broadcast but the sound system is vy poor..too soft.mayb u try to gear from a hp
Come out into the mainstream and give your opinion of what works in Malaysia and what not. Become a world class developed country and push hard !
He is founder of Pemandu Associates consultancy firm l think still active. We should get his service to expedite the recovery of economy in our current circumstances after 2 rounds of backdoor government triggered 38 months of political crisis in the country. National debt climbed to 1.5 trillions (800 billions to 1.5 trillions). Google Wikipedia yourself. TS idris Jala.
@@chuageokseng2168 Backdoor government intention is to give opportunities to some of the politicians and their cronies to get rich fast by going through the back doors. Our country already suffering from political cancers since Mahathir became the PM who has buried all the good values of most of the Malaysians and replacing them with cronyism, greed for power and money, good education systems laid down by the British was replaced with instant noodle education, today the country has to pay for the huge price.
The restraint of coming out into the mainstream esp under public service is the religious extremists. While he was a minister, the then PM had to ask him to appear less in the mainstream due to pressures from these extremists. It's also one of the reason why he was not called back to revive MAS due to his faith background. Msia has tonnes of talents and many are not allowed to hold high office due to their faith and race background. Msia really need a very good leader who can balance the trade-off.
Thanks for this wonderful & interesting interview.
Great insights & lessons from Idris Jala.
Definitely i'll share it with all contacts.
LKY also lamented Malaysia cannot succeed if race based politics dominated the landscape. Tunku kicked Singapore out because LKY wanted multi racial politics for both Malaysia and Singapore. Can Malaysia solve that problem?
What lky meant was a chinese-dominated politics for both singapore and malaysia.Nonsense.
In another multiverse
@@ishaks8152 hav more insight into the history pls. Lots of our history has been buried for easier indoctrination.
@@ishaks8152no, he wanted a Malaysia for Malaysians. Have you read all his books ?
I thought that pemandu was closed down.
I if that happens I will start playing my guitar at forums.
Wow... great session on leadership..
So many views but so few likes and comments. Strange indeed.
could be some views already up there
Idris Jala seems promising when he was named to head Malaysia Airlines.
I got lost on him when he took up the position in Pemandu under Najib and continued to do his bidding.
Shocking if you asked me.
The keys are...rid govt of corruption thru hatsh punitive measures, n vocational training n IT skills training of its mpowr base.
He made his choice to not be a leader. He cannot expect the others to tell him where to go or what to do and vive versa. He could easily won a seat in parliament being a Sarawakian and be a true politician that matter. Still lots of time to so .... Stop whinning
We need external consultancy firm to complement with our Ministry of Economic Affairs in our current situation. Go get his service to help in the recovery of our economy during its 1st 5 years' golden period of economic reforms.
Nasi sudah jadi bubur.
Do not ignore the huge elephant in the country's political system.
Poor audio system. Can hear one person speaking and not the other.
We used to do GST.. then we regress
Honestly I prefer your previous styles with mic and table in a room circa 2019. It was rather personal, less formal and like those insightful talk we had in kopitiam in good olden days
Hi Jun Hor
Thanks for the feedback. I do miss those days sometimes too. . Perhaps one day I will go back to that format ..
Talking about diabetes in Malaysia, your coffee and tea are far too sweet. Condensed Milk and sugar cover one third of the glass. Reduce the condensed milk and sugar contents, you will have many more healthier Malaysians.
That's just one chapter of the book!😊
Esok perintah ,hari ni harga turun.
Pandai ka formula pemimpin mcm tu.
Idris Jala pun bagi idea yg berbeza.
Infrastuktur spt ECR pun MOF batalkan .Mcm mana nak ada public transport yg baik
GST pun Menteri Kewangan masa tu mansuhkan.
Apakah idea Idris Jala ni mcm DSNajib ?
Is he a cabinet minister? Economics , finance, manpower?
Pemandu performed excellently under Idris. Wasted talent. Bring him back
This familiar policy during bossku
some news on behavioral conduct can cause image problem
I'd rather pay less taxes and have the government do less. Economy should be run by private sectors not the government.
Podah.... can't even have the audio of this program working properly and want to fix problems in the country.
Turnaround to supply the same ethnic talent policyies is no turnaround
I hv been saying for years. Structural tax reform

Can i share my thoughts to you. U did not mentioned, after he rises to the top , he forget his roots . Insread, colludding with a group of cronies , mostly his shell colleagues hijacked the pemandu project enriched all his group even though layman like me with good business ideas forwarded for his support was hijacked n twisted . Finally, i can say, don't just bluff and boost. Be sincere .
Repeat again your statements. Blur.
U just share ur negative assumption

Why is it "could have had?"
Don't foresee positive transformation due to you know, I know and everyone knows...
I hv no problem with souund
Host tried to out talk the guest, so irritating
Higher taxes is not a solution, we need to stop wastage of public resources.
one day... if everyone can be mature enough to compete with merit, stop all the corruptions, get rid all the dead woods, stop all the spat. focus on first class education, ultra high productivity..... and all the taxes will work.
Unfortunately, politician will only go for low hanging fruits and just to win vote. Very sad.
Datuk Hasni Awang
Now is the right time for you to join dsai- pmx ,rafizi, loke and the rest of coalition govt to make Malaysia truly great again- Malaysiab tiger with a thunderous roar
We still lead in terms of badminton 😛
A true refection of DAP's slogan song - sucess comes from 70% sheer hard work (and passion to succeed) and 30% from divine intervention.
Why is DAP always mentioned? Sounds very much paranoid.
Undeniably 100% divine intervention. When man works, man works. But when man prays, God works! A huge Amen.🤗

Don't be too obsessed with the unknown Gods, they are as illusory, imaginary and unreal. If one insists on there is one. I only do believe in the saying: God helps those who help themselves.
Idris Jala is a God-fear person, he prayed and worked relentlessly of what is prayed for (Pray with Action). And the Almighty God bless him. His cases and the bible story like Joseph and Daniel are similar fundamentally how God works on his obedient people.
