PEMANDU's Dato' Sri Idris Jala - The Leader Malaysia Could Have Had - But Didn't
Born in Sarawak as a devout Kelabit Christian, Dato' Sri Idris Jala wasn’t meant to work at Shell for 23 years. Nor was he meant to head Malaysia Airlines, help Proton in its turnaround strategy, work as a former Minister in the Malaysian government, much less advise governments and global corporations in socioeconomic affairs as Chairman of PEMANDU Associates.
And yet he did, thanks to a heady cocktail of destiny, faith and hard work, culminating in his current roles as Co-Chairman of Sunway, ProChancellor of Sunway University and Chairman of Heineken Malaysia, in between lecturing twice a year at Harvard University.
Here, he talks to Khoo Hsu Chuang about Leadership, Fate, Faith and Serendipity, while proffering original and practical suggestions for Malaysia’s woes.
(Many thanks to the Asia School of Business for their collaboration with The Do More Podcast, in whose studio this conversation was recorded. The Asia School of Business is a partnership between MIT Sloan School of Management and Bank Negara Malaysia).

The success is not just becos of his leadership but also the citizen of Singapore as a whole who are willing to put aside everything and move with his leadership.

Racist comments by haters of the Malay race who walk around with the perception that they are the superior being in this region - isn’t that just like those living in that illegally occupied land in the middle east fantasing that it is their right to be there. As if it is not enough that the Malays are being marginalised by them or by their influence in the private sector these racist bigots stop at nothing to continously ridicule and defame the Malays.

For as long as that only one certain race and religion can only be the PM, this country can never move forward.
Because corruption is deeply rooted and born inside this race and part of this religion.

What Malaysia can do to progress towards the level of advanced economies is to unite everyone under a common framework. Religion and race cannot be the framework because they divide people. The best framework is national identity, something that Singapore used and, it seems, more recently also Indonesia. Thailand has had its own national identity for a very long time.

A wise and practical man. Joseph was sold as a slave to the Egyptian. Our situation during time in Egypt were different but similar. Pharos gave 100% confidence to Joseph. Joseph was unhindered in the execution of his plan. But in today's world, pride over rule everything. Pride are mentioned many time in the bible. If any country has so much pride in their mentality, be prepared for the fall

Malaysia's main problem is one and he has indirectly made it clear. The fix is easy but the execution is hard is because this one problem. The politicians and businessman are two different types of people with different concept and rules to live/work by. When the two becomes one, Singapore happens but unfortunately, Malaysia would take huge reformation for that to happen because the leadership is still largely based on the political side of the spectrum

While he was a minister, the then PM had to ask him to appear less in the mainstream due to pressures from these extremists. It's also one of the reason why he was not called back to revive MAS due to his faith background. Msia has tonnes of talents and many are not allowed to hold high office due to their faith and race background. Msia really need a very good leader who can balance the trade-off.

Honestly I prefer your previous styles with mic and table in a room circa 2019. It was rather personal, less formal and like those insightful talk we had in kopitiam in good olden days

Talking about diabetes in Malaysia, your coffee and tea are far too sweet. Condensed Milk and sugar cover one third of the glass. Reduce the condensed milk and sugar contents, you will have many more healthier Malaysians.

Can i share my thoughts to you. U did not mentioned, after he rises to the top , he forget his roots . Insread, colludding with a group of cronies , mostly his shell colleagues hijacked the pemandu project enriched all his group even though layman like me with good business ideas forwarded for his support was hijacked n twisted . Finally, i can say, don't just bluff and boost. Be sincere .

one day... if everyone can be mature enough to compete with merit, stop all the corruptions, get rid all the dead woods, stop all the spat. focus on first class education, ultra high productivity..... and all the taxes will work.
Unfortunately, politician will only go for low hanging fruits and just to win vote. Very sad.

Don't be too obsessed with the unknown Gods, they are as illusory, imaginary and unreal. If one insists on there is one. I only do believe in the saying: God helps those who help themselves.

Idris Jala is a God-fear person, he prayed and worked relentlessly of what is prayed for (Pray with Action). And the Almighty God bless him. His cases and the bible story like Joseph and Daniel are similar fundamentally how God works on his obedient people.
