Lib Dems' Ed Davey "Can't Survive" Over Role In Post Office Scandal Says Trevor Kavanagh

- The Sun’s Trevor Kavanagh says the Liberal Democrats leader “cannot survive” in politics over his role in the Post Office scandal.
Sir Ed Davey has faced criticism over turning down a request to meet campaigning sub-postmaster Alan Bates in 2010 with the Lib Dem leader insisting he did raise concerns about Horizon with the Post Office but was repeatedly misled by senior bosses.
A new law will be introduced to exonerate hundreds of Post Office branch managers caught up in the Horizon IT scandal with Rishi Sunak saying they were victims of “one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in our nation’s history”.
It comes after Post Office minister Kevin Hollinrake said there has always been a “sense of urgency” over redress for victims of the Horizon scandal but stressed the “complexities” surrounding full and final settlements.
Trevor says “Ed Davey will be lucky to still be leader by the weekend. His entire political life is stained by this one huge error.”

If i was one of the innocent people who went to prison. I'd want to see the top bosses and board members who knew about the problem to go to prison.
absolutely...
I think the people have already found the ministers and post office board guilty..so the boot is on the other foot now,we all look forward to seeing them all behind bars
Totally agree horrific what they did.
There is now a petition on 38 Degrees to strip Ed Davey of his knighthood
Take away 5 and you’ll understand why he’s protected
Davy was given clear evidence when he was in charge that there was a problem with the charges and chose to do nothing.
75K is NO Recompence for Life Destroyed
MP's can claim more than 75k in expense's every year. ?
its an interim payment keep up if you are going to post at least read the full report first...you might not get it in the MIRROR
After he left his post he was given over £200,000 by the law firm that he left alone to make millions jailing innocent people. This stinks.
REALLY stinks !!!!
Saying "a number are guilty " is a way of the Establishment still putting doubt in the publics mind , it's a disgusting tactic anyone with half a brain can see that for what it is
Dunno mate...one of my mates from school ran a post office and he was as crooked as they come...he ended up in jail...so fiddling does happen
@@andyparkhouse4157of course it happens but evidence has to be conclusively available.
@@andyparkhouse4157 Was there any evidence? Or did someone say "he's a witch".
I don't know much about it but not one of our circle of friends ever even thought he might be innocent...he robbed them blind
'Dirty Davey'' is as Corrupt as the Day is Long.
Accepts 275k from a Lobbyist Firm funded by Fujitsu and then
awards them a 18 Billion Contract.
Way to many Corrupt Politicians in the Cabal who want these
''exploitable expendable'' little people paid off and shut up.
While these innocent people who lived thru this nightmare
will be sick to the back teeth they should only accept any
Compensation ''Unconditionally'' and then group together and
file a Class Action Claim agains the Post Office for
Defamation and Libel.
Might just up the meagre 600K on the table to a realistic
Compensation Package.
The SNP are unable to account for 2 Billion of Tax payers funds,
so as the Government thinks that's funny and uses it make
sarcastic remarks, a Class Action Claim will soon focus their minds..
He took the Post Office lies at face value, that was not his job.
Its time for Ed Davey to go. His position is untenable. He was always quick to point the finger at others.
poor old lib dems, they do try don't they. Taxi for Steady Eddie lmao
Davey is Like the Excuse for a Conservative Party they are Finished 😷
Ok the torys maybe finished, but is stammer or any of these so called ministers any good,
He's a Lib Dem. What about the excuse for a Labour leader Keir Starmer, who “wasn't aware” of postmasters being hounded by the Crown Prosecution Service while he was in charge of the Crown Prosecution Service? Keir always appears to absolves himself of any blame when the buck is meant to stop at the boss.
Thats labour for you @@SmartCookie2022
@@SmartCookie2022And don't forget that Beer Korma presided over the lack of grooming gang prosecutions as well.
The Labour party were finished a few short years ago. A lot can change in a very short time
Ed davey should resign and so should kier stammer for the bigger Scandal of allowing the grooming gangs to get away with what they did.
As head of the DPP at the time of the Post Office scandal, Kier Starmer could have stepped in but didn’t, therefore, he is just as bad
@@karendowse8721oh dear the bloody IGNORANCE! The DPP was NOT INVOLVED! The PO has the power to do their own investigations without calling in the police ,and they hold their own courts without reference to the DPP! Learn the facts before you push this stupidity.
@@Lynnefromlyn talking of ignorance and facts, best you learn yours, the CPS were involved in some of the prosecutions, Starmer faced questions in the HoC asking why he didn’t do something as he was in a position to do so, his answer, ‘I didn’t know’…yes, he could’ve had his team question why so many private prosecutions were being carried out and he could’ve taken the matter further. FACT!
@@Lynnefromlyn Ah, we've found the staunch lefty in the comments. The prosecutions took place between 1999 and 2015 and for most of those years LABOUR were in Government and what did LABOUR do about it-NOTHING! And the CPS was involved in some of the cases when Starmer was the DPP, but he insists he “wasn't aware” of postmasters being hounded by the Crown Prosecution Service while he was in charge. Sound familiar? Cough-cough Savile. There seems to be a bit of a theme here. As you liked to remind us when Boris was PM, the buck stops at the top.
How is it any different if not far worse ?✌️✌️🇬🇧🇬🇧
Davy took £275k from the firm of lawyers who were prosecuting the postmasters. How can that be legal, he should have been kicked out of Parlaiment years ago just for advising the lawyers when he had been the man in charge of the post office
How long ago did Davey and Starmer change their tune and start demanding justice for the post office workers? Was it only when the truth about their own incompetence was revealed
Starmer?? You think he is the problem? It was under a Tory government
I agree with Trevor that organizations such as the Post Office, the BBC, HMRC etc should not be able to prosecute without prejudice or actual evidence
Well said.
Definitely.
You left out the Child Maintenance Service .
This was prosecuted so blatantly and vindictively by the Post Office, that it makes you think that those responsible deliberately set out on a criminal endeavour to enrich themselves knowing they could hide behind the IT. As with Watergate and police corruption in the 70's - 'follow the money'. Where did the thousands paid by the postmasters go? Was there a change in lifestyle for those at the Post Office - children going to public school, swimming pools in the garden, holiday homes. The police should go the whole way and seize bank statements, financial records etc. Put the heat where it deserves to be.
@@alangordon3283 they’re another big government organisation that can do it as well
ED DAVEY Should be striped of Knighthood also kicked out of HoC and prosecuted as a matter of urgency
2 knights NOT IN SHINING ARMOUR…Starmer and Davey , their knighthoods must be removed!!
@@NeriaWolf Cronyism. Apparently, something that the next Labour Government is promising to stamp out despite Starmer benefitting from it himself with regards to the appointment of DPP and a knighthood.
Sad world where it takes a tv show to get justice……sign of how corrupt our government is
this system was brought in by the labour party under Sir Anthony Blair GOT IT
Davey’s response at the time was typical of a “ don’t bother me I am an important mp !”, typical.
@Buckbury
Yeah totally agree, a very important Wind Bag.
If he's the man thats called for 31people to stand down then end of play fri sounds about right!!!
Ed Davey was the person who did away with our gas storage, shows how bright he is.
yeah a real bright shining light
Have to say that I'm rather enjoying the 'light of truth' being shone on ALL of our decision-making MPs this past year ! Governing is not easy, I get that, but has the quality of our MPs ever been as poor as it is this past decade ? The Covid Inquiry tells us a lot too. And - somewhat off-topic - how come no-one in Govt could forsee the issues of failing to build a Reservoir since 1992, but allowing our population to grow and grow !? Leadership - and responsibility - has never been in shorter supply than this past 10-12 years.
@rjw4762
Absolutely spot on the mark,
Couldn't said it better.👍👍👍
I agree with you, the level of MP's of all parties seems so poor, in addition they all appear self-serving, money grabbing, lazy, devoid of morals, general decency and seem to look down their noses at the so-called 'little people' (us).
@@paulineashcroft1485and there we have it. Blaming ALL PARTIES for the atrocious behaviour of the bloody tories. They are NOT all the same don’t be stupid.
@@paulineashcroft1485 Well said.
Just the past 10-12 years is it? But this scandal started under a Labour government that goes back to 1999. That's longer than 10-12 years. Plus, you're forgetting the damage to our legal system that Tony Blair inflicted on the country with his creation of the Supreme Court. Notice how his Human Rights Act of 1998 didn't protect any of the postmasters from persecution.
All our National organisations are collapsing, the GPO, the Police , the NHS, the BBC this country is in a very poor state
Surely Ed Davey cannot survive this scandal, the public will not forget or forgive. If he doesn't resign he and his party will suffer greatly at the ballot box.
Trevor is 100% right Ed should be gone
We are talking about the very heart of our country being torn apart. God bless them!
The man's a pratt anyway, how in the hell did he get a nighthood ?
Knighthood!
@Cliffordparry
Dullard Davey, he's got his title like many others have by knowing the correct handshake and kissing the correct arses, just like Starmer, he's certainly not earned it by being good at his job or for any outstanding achievements.
Being a pratt is a requirement to get a knighthood these days.
@@hughmcginn7664 smartshyte, smartshite, shyte

He should be stripped of his knighthood.
Ed Davey will do the honourable thing as all our politicians do, he will resign and apologise!
🤪😂
Any compensation should not be taken from the tax payer at any cost. This lays firmly at the feet of the company Fujitsu they new about the problems with the program but decided to ignore it at all costs . If the government does not fully make them pay for the injustice to the people that had to suffer the indignity of this fiasco then the government are just as much to blame for allowing them to act as police and judge and jury to prosecute all those innocent people . that have lost so much . Prison should be given to those that deserve it in Fujitsu for this. Ed Davey should answer to his part in this Are You Tube going to post this true comment
Let's face it, being leadet of the lib dems is only Saturday morning job
That’s half a day more than Tory MPs though.
@@Lynnefromlyn And Labour still did NOTHING about investigating or overturning the wrongful convictions on THEIR watch, did they?
What, the whole morning?
its the sort of job you do just to get oneself off the dole
Keir Starmer is just a culpable as Ed Davey, he was DPP when many of these convictions occurred.
When you ad in his failure to prosecute Saville, he competence should be heavily questioned
I totally agree but we know that will never happen
This guy Ed has absolutely no integrity,, so he won’t be resigning.
The rats are heading for the lifeboat. Davey may well lose his job as head of the limp lettuce mob, (good riddance), but I will put my pension on him landing a cushy little number in the city with automatic elevation to the upper house within 12 months.
Anyone want to bet against it?
The post office should pay any reperations, these people should be paid back the money they were alleged of stealing and had to pay back(with interest) each case would be different and should be treated as such,so they are exonerated individually.
Love listening to Trevor Kavanagh. An old hack who has been there and done it. He speaks sense.
scarily, there are very few left like him !!
Worked for the Sun... Who have lied about almost everything
The man should be arrested and jailed! £275,000 payment from the law firm who fitted up the postmasters!! How the hell cant thst be corruption and bribay at the highest level. MPs should be BANNED from taking any 2nd jobs whilst serving their consituants. If they are not happy with the pay then DONT become an MP!
Lets be clear, paying back what was lost is not compensation. Everybody's losses need to be made whole and compensation needs to be paid on top of that. You dont steal £10 from me, call me a crook for 20 years, then get caught and give it back telling me ive been compensated
I agree totally. It is going to need 20x the £75,000 that is suggested to put them back into the same financial position. They have lost savings, their businesses, their homes, their ability to find work diminished and they were probably paying into the Post Office pension scheme towards their retirement. All this and the stain on their character all need compensating for.
@@brianpomery7770 you gonna pay for it?
@adamgrimsley2900 Yes, as a tax payer I'll be paying it. But then the UK government should be taking legal action to recover the money from Fujitsu
@@brianpomery7770 what if another tax payer says I dont want to pay for it?

i can't help the feeling we some how given the tory a way not to be charged and convicted with this new law .
£75k for people who have lost there house , business reputation and dignity, not enough. £500k minimum
When these people are exonerated they should also get their details removed from the Police National Computer because their details will still be held on there and they will have a PNC number, even though it will say on their that they were exonerated, BUT, they will still be shown as being a "previous criminal" with a "club number" !!! This needs to be looked into!!!!
The trouble is the 3 major parties involved is bad news for sub postmasters, they will all cover each others backsides
They'll all just blame each other.
The Scarlet Pimpernel Ed Davey what an absolute weasel , some laywers and Barristers need jail time , they think they are the clever people in scewing the little people so they must have know what the criminal post office with unlimited money to was doing but turned a blind eye to rack in millions we need to see these people do jail time so next time they ask questions instead of money which is all a lot think about .
oh, didnt Vennells and Davey have a little chat before they opened their gobs
One can only hope !
Absolutely nailed it. so well put thank-you.
They all should be sent to jail pure evil what they have done.
ED Davey, OUT, OUT, OUT, A total Waste of space and money.
A scandal it appears that nobody in the Post Office hierarchy or I.T. staff recognised as a ridiculous number of "coincidences". Heads should roll from the bottom to the very top over this and that includes Mr Davey.
According to a BBC story an IT consultant identified problems as early as 2003 but was then subsequently fired from his job.
@@SmartCookie2022 Interesting! You say that he was a "consultant" - does that mean he was not an actual P.O. employee? Did the P.O. have their own I.T. Department?
Nothing honourable about Davey
Worst kind of person to put in power
Just a wage collector
Just remind me how many Tory post office ministers have there been in the last thirteen years?
Even though Boris did NOT attend any parties he resigned because he was in charge ( if Starmer had one once of integrity he would NOW resign because he was in charge when the post masters were send to prison)

Ed davey should resign and so should kier stammer for the bigger Scandal of allowing the grooming gangs to get away with what they did, and the rest should go to
Starmer can't survive either.
Ed Davey is as guilty as vennells and Co he’s a wally
Please, please, Ed, don't resign. We need a damaged Lib Dem leader at the next General Election.
ED DAVEY NEEDS LOCKING UP NOW 4 PEOPLE DIED FOR THIS COVER UP
Where’s Ed davey hiding the man is a disgrace
It's all the past PM's that should be brought to account too since the scandal came about.
Davey is a Man of the People, as long as they are the Right People.
Trevor Kavanagh....intelligent and intellectual...what the hell is he doing writing for that comic...the Sun?
Agree Davey has to go, but not only him, Horizon was introduced in 1999 - and is still employed today. Labour and Conservatives exclusively in power during this , under the Tories, Vennells given her honour and PO allowed to spend on lawyers challenging all Sub Master legal cases. Go after them all Talk TV, not just the ones that are politically advantageous to a right wing point of view. Go after them all!
Why didn't the judges exert any independent thinking when all these people were being brought before them? They are supposed to be impartial and guide the jury. Nobody has suggested they were complicit but neither has anybody pointed any fingers
What about Blair’s role in this.
First job, sack Davy, next job,the woman who was boss at the time, she should pay back her pension, next job,pay decent compensation to all affected
Davey can survive. He can take his knighthood with him when he enjoys his stay in Durham or Wakefield. A knight behind bars. Will the other prisoners take the knee?
Someone needs jailing
Ed Davy’s other massive failing was Hinckley Point C, the most expensive nuclear plant ever constructed and reliant on the French and Chinese. The plant is prototypypical and at the time of this dreadful deal those under construction were years late and overspent in multiples.
If Ed Davey is really sincere about
his answer then he should give back the money he received from the Post Office legal team. The fact he received money for helping the Post Office case against innocently accused of which they committed perjury and perverted the course of justuce is enough for this man to not only say "sorry" but quietly retire from "public service".
keir stammer ,what was he doing
Director of Public Prosecutions, head of Crown Prosecution Service who prosecuted some of the Post Masters , also during his tenure Saville and Rochdale scandals
Michael Keegan and Simon Blagden both CEOs at Fujitsu during the scandal both need to go too, now in cishybwell paid government positions .And possibly Gillian Keegan his wife , education minister who MUST have know the skullduggery that went on and DID NOTHING!
Michael Keegan was only chairman and CEO between 2015 and 2018. There's been quite a number of bosses of Fujitsu before Keegan was appointed. And the contract was signed in 1999 by a Labour Government, so has nothing to do with a Tory awarding itself a contract.
@@SmartCookie2022 and what was he doing between 2015 and 2018? And you are majorly mistaken in everything you’ve said. Sadly, there is nothing of the nominal determinism about you! 😂

Lets hope Ed Davey goes to jail and doesn't survive there either.
Starmer has questions to answer as well
If Ed davey says he was lied to who lied ? Name them let’s get them in court , if they lied they deserve to be prosecuted, davey just passing the buck 😡
It's the post office and those involved in the scandal should lose thier pensions and houses
Davey is and always has been irrelevant, he will be no loss whatsoever to parliament and public service. He should also be stripped of his mickey mouse honour(of which he has zero).
The lawyers want this to drag on for many years to maximise there fees.-------they should be named and shamed as well.
Somebody must be held accountable for this tragedy and feel the full force of the law if they lied, especially if they committed perjury. Already those involved are saying "nothing to do with me, it was others"
not just the sub postmasters shop workers were let go because sub postmasters had lost trust in them
Davy is damaged goods, tough call, but he could tough it out it, but probably better to go
Davey looks thick as four short planks!
Will the Post Office pay Tax on their ill gotten gains?
Perhaps Eggface Davey should stay on as leader so every time he appears he can be hounded about it. Imagine one of those leadership debates and whilst he out canvassing he can be constantly reminded why no one will vote for them. Surely better than just letting him slip away? He's never going to be prosecuted in this unjust country with it's biased criminal system.
Asleep at the wheel
Ed Davey is a hypocrite, and should resign. Also, Starmer has a case to answer.
Trevor as always with a measured opinion I have always respected him as a no nonsense journalist
He was paid not to by the law firm representing the post office
He comes across to me as a right smug git!
Davey was in the useless government he should face justice
Of course he will survive the establishment looks after their own
The ones who did defraud need to be identified because it's unfair on the honest ones otherwise
Ed Davey must resign immediately & be stripped of his Knighthood.
Never vote for a guy like him. Vote reform please people
Get rid now or they stand no chance with the people come vote day
I don't get it. If Ed Davey - and the others - were saying they had no real power in that particular Ministerial role, quickly blaming everybody else, why did they take it? Why was it offered in the first place? Nothing to do with the money of course.
£75,000 no where near enough considering the mental trauma endured.
What about the Compensation for the Blood Products Scandal?
I am very pleased for the Sub Postmasters, but the Blood Product Victims are also little people with destroyed lives and families.
They are all puppets anyway…it’s not what we can see that’s the problem…it’s trying to work out who is pulling their strings..! 😇
Don't forget.......(sir) Kier Starmer was head of the CPS whilst all this was going on
If Ed Davey is forced out there will be a long line following him, Until ITV made this programme the postmasters were in danger of getting shafted yet again with most of the current incumbents of Westminster not giving a toss , One out all out sounds good to me , a complete new start could be very refreshing
