  • He sold the car over 20+ years ago when he was an alcoholic. Said he probably would have died in it. This is the first time he saw it since he sold it over 20+ years ago. The car does look in relative good shape, we have no idea what has been done with the car over the past 20 years. It obviously wasn't sitting there for 20 years and nobody claims it to be. Pay attention, people. 1964 Buick Rivera. 425 Wildcat V8 w/ 427 horsepower.

    My brother had one of those. It had a two speed automatic, I think. He gave it a stomp on the freeway going about 55 and the downshift was so gloriously violent, and the acceleration so brutal, that we nearly wet ourselves. A really under rated performance car.

    So many of these older guys buy up old cars like this, sit them in a field and never do anything with them. They will have dozens - maybe even hundreds of old "project cars" sitting around deteriorating. Always say they are going to restore it one day but never have any real intention to. Then when a person comes along with the skill, money and desire to buy and restore the car they still refuse to sell it. They will either flat out say its not for sale or they will throw some unrealistic price on the car to chase the buyer away-as in this case. The guy asking 10,000 for this car more thank likely has no intention to ever sell it. He would rather see it sit there in that field on his property and rot away until the day he dies than to let it go to the hands of someone who might do something with it.
    Its kind of like that TV show Hoarders in a way, only instead of filliing random items in the house they refuse to get rid of these guys hoard cars.

    GM should have given away 1,000 of these each year of production, everybody who sat in a Buick Riviera wanted one, they were that special. This car was exceptional inside for its time, when you opened the door it lit up. Smooth, handled like a dream, fair to great gas mileage for the time and mid sized... and fast!

    He doesnt want to sell, he's never gonna sell. He just likes the attention the car brings him.. I know a guy that has nothing but chevy's...from 1952 up until a 1971 chevelle..
    All impalas, chevelles, el camino's and corvettes... they just sit in the snow and rain and changing temps... i managed to get 2 off him in the 20 yrs ive know him.. A 65 impala SS and a 70 chevelle....I restored both...."The rest are still sitting ..he says he's gonna get around to restoring them... He turns down reasonable offers...He just likes the attention.

      +austin tatious He sounds a right fruit loop. A guy who lives near me has loads of Trabants he bought mega cheap when the Berlin Wall fell. There must be around 50 of them yet all he does is leave them rotting away on a large field he owns. Of course in 1989 nobody wanted a Trabant....they were practically given away! But that was 26 years ago and now they are sought after collectable cars.

    Lots of potential there. Those old Nailheads were torque monsters... I rebuilt/hopped up a 425 for a customer (A priest!) and after it was done that car would shred the tires at will. I love those cast valve covers. Those engines were works of art with the dealer-installed dual quads. I used to own a 65 Special (way lighter) and can attest to the Torque and speed of the nailhead. You need to buy that car-not too often does one find a car they shouldn't have sold decades later. Thanks for posting

  • @Bulletguy07
    @Bulletguy07 Před 8 lety +3

    It's very strange how some people just buy cars, park them up in a field or wherever, and either want "silly money" to part with them or FLAT REFUSE to sell. They just like watching them rot away and take some kind of weird pleasure in depriving someone else from saving them.
    I once came across a 1965 Mk1 Mini (way more rare than Cooper 'S') in someones garden, just like this though covered in weed. Fortunately the guy who owned it was going to scrap it so i offered him the same money and he accepted. That was one Mk1 Mini saved!!

    Posted here many comments back. Keep crossing paths with this video. The front rake on the fenders had me hooked the first time I laid eyes on my 65. Very sinister in Midnight Blue lacquer and turquoise interior. Tires would howl when you lit them up. I ran a 401 with factory quadrajet. Switched to the optional dual Carters later on. Too much for the 401 on the low end, but the car screamed with the kickdown engaged and 8 barrels wide open. High revs were crazy with the dual quads.

    True, I've heard of old dudes who have been pressured by their old ladies to sell their stuff, so they put their stuff up for sale just to shut the wench up, but price everything too high for anyone to have interest.
    Still, he should have recognized that old rusty car meant something personally to this guy and made him a better offer. I mean, show some heart. People do it all the time and it doesn't result in the sky falling down.

    It doesn't matter how the valve covers are oriented, the cylinders are still opposed at a 90° angle. The valve covers on a nailhead are actually just very big and horizontal to the ground on top giving it an awkward appearance, but the pistons still all meet from both sides of the engine in the center.

  • @clangun
    @clangun Před 11 lety +1

    It became known as the"Nailhead" for the unusual vertical position of its small sized valves which were compared to nails since their head diameter is smaller than other comparable displacement engines of the same era. The engine used a camshaft with greater lift and duration to offset the smaller sized valves and restrictive ports.The heads sit on top of the engine block and match the bank angle, however the rocker covers sit level on top of the heads to accommodate the rockers and valves.

    Thing about old American cars is they never get to a point of no return. They were built with real, thick, quality steel and can always be rebuilt. You'll see 1930s cars that have been sitting in the woods since the 50s that still hold shape and the doors still work. Most other countries are dumb to the American cars on the road. They seem to think all the cars are junk and cheaply built, always falling apart. Most of our cars have 200k+ miles on them and are still being driven every day.

    SuperVetteguy, the front clip alone is worth an easy $2k, not to mention all the rest of the sheet metal, trim, and interior. While $10k is a little strong for the car as it sits, its not unreasonable given what the market is like and the collectibility of the first-gen Rivieras.

    • @Bayan1905
      @Bayan1905 Před 10 lety +1

      Loretta Bain
      They are not as rare or valuable as you think. I have been around old cars since high school, and that was 20 plus years ago. I have had old cars, rare cars, and I am actually restoring a rare option Ford pickup now. I can tell you after looking online just today there are quite a few of these same year, same option motor cars for around 20K and under, and those are one's that are restored or very clean all original cars. To restore that car back to all original would cost 20K on a car you want 10K for. It's not worth it. Also, the motor is not a Wildcat, the Wildcat was a separate line of car similar to the Electra and shared the same style in general as the Oldsmobile Starfire. The Buick Riviera came with two engines, either a 401 Nailhead or the 425 Nailhead. The 401 was only 265 hp and the 425 was only 340 hp. Those were not exactly powerhouses when you look at the 409 Impala in 63-64 making 425 hp, the GTO making 368 hp with the 389 and the Catalina making 370 hp with the 421 V8. The Riviera is not a muscle car, it never was. It might be a rare car to some, (it actually isn't) but rare doesn't always mean valuable. I can tell you I have seen some "rare" cars sit for years because their owners thought they were worth more because the owner hasn't seen another one. One example I saw was a 67 Chrysler Newport 2dr hardtop with a 440 Magnum automatic tranny. The owner that the car was worth a fortune, it wasn't and he sold it for less simply because no one would buy it. If you try to squeeze 10K out of that car, you'll end up letting it rust to nothing, no one in their right mind who knows cars will pay 10K for that car when 20K will get you one done already or real close to it.

    • @fsca72
      @fsca72 Před 10 lety

      The body might not be as rare but the 425 sure is. Take this for an example; the Air Force originally used 425's to power up the SR-71 turbines then later scrapped that idea because the parts for 425 were readily available. Nowadays it's nearly impossible to find a good block too work with.

    • @Bayan1905
      @Bayan1905 Před 10 lety +1

      I can tell you that the 425 while a good motor, is not that great compared to the GTO and Impala's of the same years, which is why these cars are not worth all that much. A GTO of the same time span has more horsepower, as does the Impala 409 and 396, even the Olds 442 had more power. All of those are more desirable. The only way this car would be worth the $10K is if it was a 66 Riviera GS with the MZ option. There were only 179 of those made, they were the 425's with dual 4bbbl carbs. Like I said, you can find one all done for $20K, $25K.

    WOW..Im sure you had nothing better to do than try to fool people into thinking the car sat for 20 years! LMAO! People are so RIDICULOUS!! Besides the fact that the video STATES your Dad hadnt seen the car in 20 years because he SOLD it! You can tell the car's been sitting a long time new carb or not...I for one THANK YOU for posting this! It's a beautiful car and would make an excellent project. Any chance you or your Dad will buy it back and restore it?

    as i was saying.......The gross rating reflects none of these losses; it represents an engine's theoretical maximum output under ideal conditions, not how much power it actually produces when installed in a car.
    parasitic loss is something that you will never overcome.

    @TheFordsforme The doors have vent windows, and the handles are pull-down, which makes it a '51 - '52. The '47 - '50 Chevys had no vent windows. The '53 had push-button door handles.

    He didn't say that it had been sitting there for 20 years.... He said that he hadn't seen it in 20 years. You are right though, it wouldn't look that good if it had been sitting there for THAT long. You can tell that it has been sitting there for a while though.

    Sometimes there isn't the cash to fix them back up. For example I still have my 1966mustang that my dad used to drive until the transmission was ruined in an off road route. Long story short after 20+ years it sat because no one had the money to fix it up, but we sure as heck don't want to get rid of it either! It's my turn ti give it some elbow grease now.

    there is no such thing as "USA horsepower".
    Before 1972, most American engines were rated under the methodology laid out in Society of American Engineers (SAE) standards J245 and J1995, which calculated the output of a 'bare' engine on a test stand with no accessories, optimal ignition timing, free-flowing exhaust headers (no mufflers), with a correction factor for standard atmospheric conditions. [damn CZcams for their short posts.........]

    First off, that car looks to good to have been sitting for 20 years. Maybe he sold it 20 years ago, but that paint would be far worse if it had sit neglected in the weather for that long. Second, i know that Buick is mean fast, but when you are drinking, it must seem like the fastest thing with wheels. Save it if you can!!!!
