Strip the insulation off and hold a length of bare wire in a lighter flame; if it glows orange then it's solid copper, but if it burns and shrivels away to nothing it's aluminium. I recently replaced my garbage disposal and found it $40 cheaper on Amazon compared to Home Depot. Sometimes things on Amazon can be more expensive than the store. The only issue I see with this advice is it's important to compare like with like. Comparing prices of the exact same product is a no brainer, but it can be tempting to compare a quality, name brand, product like Southwire sold by HD with less expensive no-name brands and think you are getting a better deal. The reality is you are comparing a quality product with a lesser quality one. Depending on the application, sometimes lesser quality is just fine or good enough and sometimes its not. As long as you are comparing more than just the prices then it's great advice.

    • @_urbanmonk
      @_urbanmonk Před 16 dny +3

      Not necessarily true. Due to the extreme volume that big box stores do, they can manipulate the price down from manufacturers like Southwire. The only way for Southwire to make their money is to make the product cheaper to a lower quality standard. Yet, they still put their name on it. Go to a professional plumbing supply store and buy any American Standard faucet or shower head, and you will find that that product has brass parts and higher tolerances. Buy the exact same design and model at a Home Depot or Lowe’s and you will find that there are nylon parts inside. This is the reality of retail and manufacturing.

Apple products are prime example. The vast majority of electronics components too. My point was that price can and often does indicate quality, brand not necessarily so because of the phenomena of large retailers having so much buying power that they can get variant products made, using cheaper materials, to reach a price point.

When a plumber told me 300.00 to replace one outside faucet and shut off valve, I replaced 2 for under 50.00, thanks to your expert instructions and confidence building "you can DO this". I also replaced 2 bathroom faucets and shut off valves. Because I saved so much by installing it myself, I could buy the higher quality, abit more expensive setups. Thanks again!

Amazon is generally cheaper on the product itself and with next day delivery no need to fight traffic and get your car/truck dinged up. I don't think HD is even trying to compete in that space anymore and has instead focused on the "do it for me" crowd - that's why staffing is virtually non-existent.
