  • In this edition of Extaordinary Brains, we at Psyched! discuss a case report of a 44-year-old patient, who after a traffic accident, developed both anterograde and retrograde amnesia. The patient was unable to recall his own name, personal history, or any events leading up to his accident, and he struggled with remembering new information for more than a few hours. The only exception to this, is that he was still able to accurately state that he was a psychiatrist for a living. The patient still possessed all of the skills and knowledge he had gained during his career as a medical professional, and would routinely offer help and advice on topics such as psychopharmacology to the intern doctors attending to him.
Of particular interest in this case report, the patient, allthough suffering minor physical injuries from his accident, suffered no neurological damage. Brain imaging, including both CT and MRI, revealed no evidence of any structural damage to the brain. Case reports detailing patients with similar memory impairments typically also describe the presence of some neurological damage, for instance to the hippocampus. The presence of both retrograde and anterograde amnesia in our patient thus makes this case study unique. Potential explanations for the patient's amnesia is also discussed in this video.

USE OF STOCK IMAGES AND VIDEOS
Occasionally we make use of stock images and videos (pixabay.com or pexels.com). We use these to make our videos more lively (better than looking at a blank screen). These stock videos should not be taken as an exact scientific reflection of the discussed content. In some cases they are not fully accurate. We try to have a high viewing pleasure, while at the same time create as little confusion as possible. Thus we aim to only use them when it is clear that they are not directly related to the discussed content.
