  • I traded my Toro gas-powered mower for a Kobalt electric battery-powered cordless lawnmower. Here's what I learned.

    For a lawn my size, I love the Kobalt mower. It works well and has a motor that powers up in thicker grass and powers down in easier to cut grass. It's great that it starts at the push of a button, meaning my kids can do their chore to mow the lawn without me having to come pull the cord each time they need to start.
    And, I love that I don't need to fill up with gas or change the oil. Since I also got an electric string trimmer and then a hedge trimmer, having multiple batteries is super helpful. Just change the battery out if I run low while mowing the lawn. My son used it for a lawn mowing job in the summer doing about a quarter acre lot.
    I'd definitely get rid of my Toro in exchange for an electric mower.

    A good review of the kobalt. You touched on the negatives of gas but the negatives of battery were never said. I would like to see a more balanced comparison.

    I have an electric mower, kobalt 80v max. My 80v battery barely cuts 1/3 of an acre before running out, so I question your 40v battery doing it. I cut about half an acre of lawn and I change the batteries out about 5 times before the job is done. I have 4 batteries and two chargers. Also, over time the batteries lose charge so the run time decreases and I have to change them more often to cut the entire lawn. While I am cutting I have batteries charging so I never have to stop and wait for them to charge. When the battery runs out I stop and remove it, go inside and grab a full battery and put the empty one on a charger, then repeat. I can’t leave the batteries outside for faster exchanges because the batteries will overheat if left in direct sunlight or in a hot environment. And the batteries are expensive, making the electric mower more expensive to own and maintain than a gas powered mower. But for small lawns, the electric mower is perfect. Larger lawns that are half an acre or more, an electric mower is more expensive in the end to own and maintain. 😀

      I have the 40V and you are right. The batteries absolutely do not last. Plus the mower itself overheats under load if the grass is a little too long. Great for very small lawns but on any decent size lawn it’s horrendous. I can’t wait to get a gas one.

    A fair test would be a new gas mower vs a new electric mower.

    I'm very disappointed in my kobalt. No horsepower, it tries to save energy by slowing down which causes no leaves to be picked up, and I have to recharge just to cut my 1/4 acre yard

    Looking to change to an electric mower. I'd say the electric has an advantage on maintenance as well. My spark plug just went out on my ICE mower. Don't have to worry about keeping a gas container in the garage or worry about oil. I'm sure ICE mowers have a couple of advantages still, but I see more advantages with the electric.

    Never said anything about the life of these compared to gas mowers which last 10 -20 year if looked after. A lot are saying battery power will only last 5 -7 years before the motors give out in this you probably need to replace battery.

    I have this same Kobalt mower and it’s absolutely awful. I’m going to replace it with a gas one. I have to cut my grass in segments because the batteries don’t last. It also overheats from the strain on the motor and shuts off. At my last house with a very small lawn it was nice and very convenient. But if you have any decent sized lawn save yourself the frustration and get a gas mower.

      I have a kobalt 80v electric mower with a self propelled option. I learned quickly to never use the self propelled option because it drains the battery very quickly. The battery is having to power the motor and the self propelled motor at the same time, and it drains fast!! 😀

    Does not sound that much quieter than a gas mower. And what I have found in the past, old electric mowers, were they lacked the power that a gas mower has. How does the power compare?

    Kobalt sucks any electric mower, Kobalt wont cut grass over 4 inches, it bogs down then shuts off, a gas mower will go right over it like nothing, the only pro electric mowers have is that they aren't as loud, but the performance suck badly!! And the battery dies fast when the engine is bogged down, and you are left waiting 3 hrs to charge the battery if not longer to use it again.

    • @bondgabebond4907

      Strain the electric motor and the battery drains quickly, that's how it works. What really is sad is the cost of the mower and second battery. It's incredibly expensive.

    • @marshmower
      @marshmower Před rokem +3

      There's the whole thing with not being fixable too. They lie about gas mower maintenance. You buy a filter every blue moon and sharpen the durable blade. Oil is recycled at your local parts store or burned in an oil burning heater.

    I just bought a brand new gas powered Toro and do not regret it. I did a lot of research on gas vs electric mowers before I bought it. Unless at some point they decide to get rid of gas powered mowers, I’ll never buy an electric mower. The batteries are WAY too expensive, they don’t last and I would not like having to stop in the middle of mowing just to change batteries. I can get by a whole summer of mowing my yard on 3 gallons of gas. Much cheaper than buying a super expensive replacement battery for an electric. My other concern would be how difficult it would be to find replacement batteries for an electric after say, 2-3 years. Manufacturers always change designs. Thanks for the video!

    Your lawn is soo tiny that you could cut it with a weedeater. Most batteries only last a year before they stop holding sufficient charge and need to be replaced.

      I have a 60v green works. It's significantly quieter. I can listen to music without downing it out. Wife can't hear me mowing inside unless I'm near the windows. Meanwhile, we can hear the neighbor no matter where he is mowing in his lawn with his gas mower.
      The downside for battery, is the self drive slows when the battery starts to die, and I need two batteries to finish.
      Slightly slower mow, but I don't need to go buy gas.

  • @Henry_Jones
    @Henry_Jones Před 2 měsíci

    Battery mowers dont put out much power. You can do the math from the battery itself. An ego with a 6ah 56v battety will put out 6 amps at 56v for 1 hour. So amps x volts = watts and there are 745 watts in 1 hp. So 6x56 = 336 watts, less than 1 hp. Lets say the battery can push 12 amps for a half hour. Ok so now 672 watts, still less than 1 hp. The fact is they all have no way to adjust the throttle and use a load sensor to spin the blade up and thats how they extend the battery life. Its also important to know that the battery runtime is runtime in push mode, self propelled mode you can cut that in half. At rhe end of the day I say corded electric is better than battery if you dont mind pushing. 120vx13a=2hp and no $300-$500 battery to worry about and theyre half the price.
