I live in New Brunswick. My grandmother was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer in July 2023, she passed on January 2nd. She complained to our family doctor for several months, and he diagnosed her with hemorrhoids. He treated symptoms, but did not investigate the cause. Turns out, that "hemorrhoid" was the colorectal cancer. Health professionals are either not getting enough training, or they are careless in their work. My grandma may have lived a few more years if they'd only caught it sooner. Shame.

A lot of that is because of COVID governments have intimidated medical doctors to stick to narratives and threaten the licenses if they don't. Most doctors now just want their patients to simply go away after the minimal exam or consult. There isn't any penalty for this.

It's not just BC. It's everywhere in Canada. This is a true tragedy. A young woman who wanted to help others is gone. She MAY have survived if she had a consistent care provider. I say "may" because women are very frequently misdiagnosed. Their symptoms are blamed on mental illness, eating disorders, histrionics, and their menstrual cycle. It takes years to finally get a diagnosis, and autoimmune disorders are a common culprit.

How can we greive for her when so many, many have died under the same circumstances i.e, waiting to see a doctor. And nothing is being done before or now. BTW: even if you have a family doctor the wait times are ridiculously long. And complaining never gets attention.
I waited for 3 years to get a gall stone removed. It wasn't until I ended up in emergency that it was esculated and even then I had to wait another 3 months! My sincere condolences to this young lady's family🙏🌹❤️
I'm going through something similarly, I'm 46 and have been healthy as an ox for my entire life up until recently. For that reason, the only time I was involved with doctors was prelabour and during my kids births. There was no need to go to the doctors.
Then 'something' happened and swiftly and suddenly I was almost paralyzed by joint pain. The ER gave me prednisone right away, and then after I was done a short course of it I could feel it was coming back again so I went to the GP closest to me. He just continued on it and didn't even question why it was happening, saying because of my age it has to be RA. RA is a genetic disease and nothing like that runs in my family.I said by their own definition it couldn't be RA, it HAS to be a symptom of something else. I wasn't heard.
Now, 2 years later I have mass rashes all over my legs from the medication given by the RA specialist. And there are other symptoms I have that clearly are pointing to the fact I most probably have Lyme disease. I keep trying to tell my GP this and he won't even give me a Lyme test to ease my fears.
It feels like they're masking symptoms but not finding the actual point of origin and I really believe I have Lyme disease. Trying to get them to listen is like pulling teeth😔 so frustrating

You should be able to get tested for Lyme disease, if only for your peace of mind, even if doctor's think it's something else.
I don't know of cost, but have you looked into getting the test done through private care? Or a Naturopath doctor is probably very familiar with Lyme symptoms. Pharmacists also know a lot. Recently, in Ontario, pharmacists have been given permission to diagnose and treat some illnesses, if they can. If it's too serious they refer you to a doctor.
You could ask an experienced pharmacist for advice, at least.
RA is miserable, but if you feel it's something else, you need to know.
I hope you find answers and feel better soon.

Yes, the more obvious got missed with me too. Over 3 years of extreme pain, in and out of emergency during the worst of it. Finally diagnosed by a very thorough Ultrasound technician, not doctors...

Add that to the bucket list of reasons not to retire in Canada. Always have a backup option at least. And I cant be the only one that thinks this way. A lot of money will be spent overseas rather than back to the expensive Canadian economy.

Our health care system is broken. Even having a family doctor, its not guaranteed anymore you'll get any help from them. I've been calling and emailing my doctor for months, and no response.

The Libetal government has not paid one minute's attention to our crumbling healthcare system in the past 8 years, focusing all of its attention on issues that affect very few Canadians and this is the result, all across our beautiful country. Remember this young woman when voting for better at the next election to ensure this does not happen again. Condolences to her family and friends for their tragic loss. 💔

What new doctors??? They have been closing down clinics in the Greater Victoria areas for the last couple of years. There is no way to get a private doctor here.

A nurse accidentally gave the wrong medication to a patient and was sent to jail, this happened not long ago and was in the news, This doctor should go to jail too.

The nurse wasn't jailed for giving the wrong meds, it was due to not following protocol which resulted in the wrong meds dispensed. Why would anyone become a doctor if they could get jailed for an error? Doctors are human!

My sister 44 yrs old went to different doctors just to get proper diagnosis and treatment.. she complaint about abdominal pain but was given tylenol and was told it might be due to PMS. If she did not insist on having biopsy and ultrasound she wont get diagnosis. Until she was in so much pain that she almost passed out and bled non stop. Was then diagnosed July 2023 of terminal cancer and died November 2023 in Edmonton Alberta. Symptoms started late 2021 and she was back and forth to bunch of practitioners. She trusted the system and ultimately was let down.
