It was hell but it looks half decent actually for my first one and only has a hundred things wrong rather than a thousand and is still a *rough rough* draft due to me watching almost 20 hours of videos pausing and rewinding a lot over many days and talking with a lot of people with more experience on discord and learning a whole world of how this modelling, game engines, creator companion, and a bunch of other useful things actually work to get here. First you need to model a donut, once that's done you'll be able to create a hypereaslitic model while blindfolded with only your feet, without toes while at gunpoint
Please be careful when commissioning others to do it for you. It's best to get to know the person beforehand. I ended up with a really snazzy looking completely custom avatar that was programmed horrendously, she had no idea what she was doing. And I overpaid immensely.

@chezsrandombs From a customer's perspective there is nothing wrong with an artist who states their own limitations and gets help from others when they need it. If it's a matter of taste or style that you are concerned about, I wouldn't worry. If however you don't think that the price tag matches what the customer will get in a specific area, we kinda have a right to know that. I really don't mind spending a couple hundred on a completely customized avatar of my fursona, but not if that means the animations are broken, and even the "quest compatible" version isn't quest compatible. I gave the artist a more difficult project than she was able to handle but she was charging steeply so I assumed that everything would be taken care of
As someone who has been learning 3D art from the start of the year I should note something. If you want an avatar, get a base or commission someone. If you want to learn 3D art be ready to invest an enormous amount of time into becoming good enough to be able to make avatars for yourself and others.

what i always find funny about this "props/edits first" approach is that i came to avatars backwards. way back before i even played vrchat i had interest in 3d modeling, so going into it with a rudimentary understanding of blender i naturally went for making avatars and textures from scratch first. so now i can do that but i'm struggling and fumbling trying to understand how to add props and other avatar features. xD
I was about to start making a model from scratch for the first time with no blender experience and then I watched this video thank the God of the youtube feed
yeah nah, blender can be fun once you start getting familiar with it and start making it bend the knee to your will but my god the learning curve is STEEP and CRUEL. not helped by the fact that many of the thorough tutorials, guides, walkthroughs, and answers are from older versions with very different UIs. then sometimes theres just hidden mechanics that you had no reasonable way to figure out. and then once you get into unity, if you want your avatar to do anything cool it becomes a whole other beast in and of itself..

i mean, you could make a creature in spore and export the model, and realize that you don't know how to make the bones for the model, so you end up downloading a model from a random tutorial, then you realize that you would need to move lal the bones and stuff since the creature you made in spore isn't the right size, then, realize that you need to make the textures again, then realize that painting parts from models exported from spore is hard, so you end up needing to make another creature without any parts and exporting it again, then finish painting, finish giving it more ass, and exporting it to unity and then giving up because you deside that you want to keep your old avatar that you found on a random world. AND THEN LOG ON TO REALIZE THAT THE AVATAR THAT YOU HAD DISAPEARD AND THAT YOU LOST THE FILE WHERE YOU WHERE KEEPING THE FULLY MADE AVATAR THAT YOU MADE.
I had to sort of Frankenstein together various pieces to make my avatar just right. 3D MODELING IS A LOT MORE BLOODY CHALLENGING THAT IT WOULD SEEM. On another note, I wonder what a quantum computer could generate in these sorts of parameters. Probably something that would be incomprehensible for many a human mind, considering how powerful and bizarre quantum computing is.

First you need to model a donut, once that's done you'll be able to create a hypereaslitic model while blindfolded with only your feet, without toes while at gunpoint

Please be careful when commissioning others to do it for you. It's best to get to know the person beforehand. I ended up with a really snazzy looking completely custom avatar that was programmed horrendously, she had no idea what she was doing. And I overpaid immensely.

From a customer's perspective there is nothing wrong with an artist who states their own limitations and gets help from others when they need it.
If it's a matter of taste or style that you are concerned about, I wouldn't worry. If however you don't think that the price tag matches what the customer will get in a specific area, we kinda have a right to know that.
I really don't mind spending a couple hundred on a completely customized avatar of my fursona, but not if that means the animations are broken, and even the "quest compatible" version isn't quest compatible.
I gave the artist a more difficult project than she was able to handle but she was charging steeply so I assumed that everything would be taken care of

As someone who has been learning 3D art from the start of the year I should note something. If you want an avatar, get a base or commission someone. If you want to learn 3D art be ready to invest an enormous amount of time into becoming good enough to be able to make avatars for yourself and others.
You do not learn blacksmithing to have a sword, you make swords to learn blacksmithing. Digital swords are the same way.

what i always find funny about this "props/edits first" approach is that i came to avatars backwards. way back before i even played vrchat i had interest in 3d modeling, so going into it with a rudimentary understanding of blender i naturally went for making avatars and textures from scratch first. so now i can do that but i'm struggling and fumbling trying to understand how to add props and other avatar features. xD

I was about to start making a model from scratch for the first time with no blender experience and then I watched this video thank the God of the youtube feed
yeah nah, blender can be fun once you start getting familiar with it and start making it bend the knee to your will but my god the learning curve is STEEP and CRUEL. not helped by the fact that many of the thorough tutorials, guides, walkthroughs, and answers are from older versions with very different UIs. then sometimes theres just hidden mechanics that you had no reasonable way to figure out.
and then once you get into unity, if you want your avatar to do anything cool it becomes a whole other beast in and of itself..
I’d probably cry if I tried making my own VRChat model, even just a retexture would be too hard 🥲

i mean, you could make a creature in spore and export the model, and realize that you don't know how to make the bones for the model, so you end up downloading a model from a random tutorial, then you realize that you would need to move lal the bones and stuff since the creature you made in spore isn't the right size, then, realize that you need to make the textures again, then realize that painting parts from models exported from spore is hard, so you end up needing to make another creature without any parts and exporting it again, then finish painting, finish giving it more ass, and exporting it to unity and then giving up because you deside that you want to keep your old avatar that you found on a random world.
AND THEN LOG ON TO REALIZE THAT THE AVATAR THAT YOU HAD DISAPEARD AND THAT YOU LOST THE FILE WHERE YOU WHERE KEEPING THE FULLY MADE AVATAR THAT YOU MADE.

I had to sort of Frankenstein together various pieces to make my avatar just right. 3D MODELING IS A LOT MORE BLOODY CHALLENGING THAT IT WOULD SEEM. On another note, I wonder what a quantum computer could generate in these sorts of parameters. Probably something that would be incomprehensible for many a human mind, considering how powerful and bizarre quantum computing is.
